when i was 9 years old my family and i were stuck in the elevator. it was absolutely terrifying. a few years laster my mom told me she heard something while we were in there. it sounded like someone was laughing at us.

I actually used to pronounce compromise the same way lol. Picturesque was another one that I learned through reading and thus didn’t know how to pronounce for a time

Pythagorus. Pronounced: Pith-a-goras. My math genius boyfriend still laughs. I'm a math dork but an English wizard. On occasion. I blame phonics.

I've heard it said that mispronouncing words is a sign that a person is well read. People who learn their vocabulary through conversation tend to pronounce things correctly, and avid readers frequently pronounce things the way they "look" on paper.

The word "treader" (as in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) I pronounced it tree-aider until the movie came out, and i still, as a 33 year old, have a hard time not pronouncing it that way

Penelope!! In front of my husband I proudly asked if he wanted to watch the movie called Penny-lope. He still snickers about it 15 years later.

Facade, avid reader myself, only saw it spelled never pronounced and was reading aloud to the class and pronounced it completely wrong to my advanced english in middle school, needless to say even the teacher laughed (good naturedly) and corrected me. Still haunts me 😅
