I heard him in person twice when he came to Los Angeles and he seemed like a Russian bear as he lumbered onto the stage; however, once he began playing there was no doubt in my mind that he was a first rate virtuoso capable of thundering octaves and the most delicate arpeggios...

The most difficult piece to play because it's too much familiar to our ears. But this performance tells me a different story. He freed this song from a cage of preconceived perception.

bravo ...what phrasing of this Schubert ave maria as if he's singing it! the voicings so clear not allowing the many arpeggios to distract from the shape of the melody

Lovely melody Austrian composer Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria" = "Hail Mary." With these words the angel Gabriel spoke to the Blessed Virgin, with a view to the future birth of her Jesus. Excellent execution of fantastic tunes remarkable pianist Lazar Berman. I adore this fantastic melody = chanting world of beauty and harmony of love. «Ave Maria» = eternal source of inspiration = treasure of spiritual music of all time. Music = Heaven. The gentle Christian prayer = appeal to the Virgin Mary, whose kind heart will always protect. «Ave Maria» = one of the most famous, popular and beloved works artists of world music.

How ironic that the best performer of the Schubert-Liszt "Ave Maria" was Jewish.
@BruceLee-or8qq5 жыл бұрын
Actually, the Schubert lied was in German, and wasn't the Ave Maria Latin text. There was only "Ave Maria" at the end of each stanza. If you look at the Liszt version, you'll see the original German text over the notes of the song.

i meant underrated as a "musician". He has always been regarded as a "super-virtuoso" since his Liszt T.E.'s were released decades ago but it almost did him more harm than good. He was a fabulous musician. His complete "Annees de Pelerinage" are top shelf IMHO. VERY musical and he produces a sound quite different than those early etudes which i find to be rather harsh and metallic. I admire him tremendously.

This brought tears to my eyes. What an underrated pianist! So many people think of him as just a "super-virtuoso" because of his fabulous technique. Do you know how difficult this transcription is? i was sight-reading it the other day. I am a very good sight-reader and i nearly blanched when i saw the score. His tone, his weighting of voicings, his beautiful phrasing, colorations......breath-taking. TY.

brian andrew leahy it is beautifully refined and controlled pianism, and the shaping of the vocal line is something many "virtuosi" could learn much from.

Its incredible hearing how much of a vocal touch he gives to it! Especially the rubato between the Melody and accompaniment really makes it sound like two instruments are being played!
