Relocating to Portland from west Michigan in 1987, one of the first road trips was to the Blast Zone. Something I just had to see for myself. It was 1989 or 1990, and even though 10 years had passed, it still looked fresh from the eruption. Looking at all the trees laid down in the same direction like so many matchsticks as far as the eye can see. All of them broken and splintered, with rocks from the blast buried deep into the wood, like so many shotgun pellets. The same gray pumice still covering everything. This devastation was viewed in stark contrast with large untouched areas, missed because they were protected on the backsides of the hills as the blast went over the tops of those hills. A lake (that I assumed was Spirit lake) almost completely covered with floating logs. And dead quiet. No animal sounds whatsoever. Those are the things I'll never forget.

So glad I found this video by watching Merlin Carothers' one. I had gum disease for 13 years and lost so many teeth. I have been praying for healthy gums with new teeth. All my top teeth but 2 are gone, including all my front ones. I am praying for new teeth but normal ones at the front. I don't really want gold front teeth. That would look a bit weird but I will receive whatever He will give me. Praise God.
Sophie, God gave my wife regular white teeth to replace some bad ones. He can do anything. Just ask in faith--nothing doubting.
In the early '70s I would be found every summer working on a wheat ranch outside of Pendleton where I was born and grew up until high school. The ranch was owned by my father's friend Bob Mumm. He was involved with the SVRR to some degree. He had business cards similar to the current icon or thumbnail. I never did find out what happened with Bob and his efforts to get the RR viable again. Anyone with a bit more information can lemme know here.

I just learned about this rescue after visiting the National Trails Interpretive Center. I found myself taken by it do much that I visted Martin's Cove Visitor's Center the next day. I highly recommend it not only to learn about this rescue, but also to see the sights in person. When its not a blizzard, its a gorgeous view.

Grew up in this area. There are hundreds of abandoned towns and buildings. I always loved the feel of Locust Grove in particular. My home town was Fossil, and Arlington for a while.
