    Most of my cameras are Lumix (2 GH5, 3 GH5S, GH6, S5ii). I would like to add a production cinema camera to the kit. Now I’m deliberating between the EVA 1 and similar cameras from other brands, such as the BlackMagic PYXIS EF mount. Your 2-part video presentation on the EVA1 provides useful insights on the EVA1.

    I am glad you found it useful. The EVA 1 truly is a great camera with a really great image and I don't think you will be disappointed by picking up one. But as I also state in my test the LCD is really bad, so please take that into consideration. We used the EVA 1 yesterday on a multicam shoot with the Sony FX6, Canon XF605 and JVC LS300. No problems at all. The Pyxis looks like a wonderful camera for sure, but no internal ND is basically just a headache if you are doing solo work. Also only recording in BM Raw basically locks you into Resolve. For me the EVA 1 is still a no- brainer in this class. The Fx6 is a nice camera as wel,l but I also have to give credit to my XF605 camera and C300MK3. They are really, really nice. Going forward I think Canon will release an update on the M3 with RF. They have already made this wonderful cinema glass for RF and my retailer tells me EF is basically out. But that opens up wonderful opportunities on the used market so...

    Have you checked your output settings on the 1DX? I don't know that specific camera, but usually you can control what signal is sent out of the HDMI port of any camera. A 3G BM Assist recorder can only record up to 1080p60 however.

  • @filmmakersrskilnand9172
    @filmmakersrskilnand91726 ай бұрын

    Unfortunately not, and that is a bummer. However I am not sure how long EF, which is an older standard, is going to last. I expect Canon to release RF mount cameras going forward and so does my retailer. If you look at all their newer releases, including the new cine primes, they are all RF. Other than the EF- mount it is a highly versatile lens if changing camera brand, E- mount, MFT- mount, L- mount and RF- mount. And the optics are really, really nice.

    No, only the normal zoom function was used :) Wide DR is one of the best in- built standard picture profiles on the market, in my opinion. Not much cooler grading is needed, bar a little black adjustment, perhaps. The XF605 is also really great in this regard. However one of my favorite picture profiles today is S- Cinetone from Sony.

    Very nice! I used to own a C200. I remember how I doubted between the EVA1, C200 and Ursa. I went for the C200 because of the brand and all the KZreadr-hype, not for the features. I still regret that. And now years later I'm really considering buying a EVA1. Mainly because of the things I now consider to be important: image quality, ease of use, usability in post. I feel like the EVA1 ticks all these boxes.

  • @filmmakersrskilnand9172

    @DanTheViddyman Thanks for watching. I have been where you are now wit the exact same choices. Glad I never went with the Ursa, great image, but demands a certain workflow and also heavier to carry around. The C200 was or still is a great camera, but it eats memory cards and hard drives real fast :) Great autofocus but noisy image if underexposed in raw or LOG . Those two reasons made me sell it. The EVA 1 truly is a great camera with a really great image and I don't think you will be disappointed by picking up a used one. But as I also state in my test the LCD is really bad, so please take that into consideration. We are shooting a feature doc right now and have made the transition from the C200 to the EVA 1 with some shots on the Canon XF605. The 605 excels when working fast on my own, but that lovely image out of the EVA 1, never miss my C200 anymore.

    really really considering this over the new lumix s5iix. Of course the newer tech gives you tools to make production easier. Anmorphic options etc. But i am way more concerned with the image itself. My main issue is low light on the eva1. Have you had a chance to do any low light tests and possible stop range? Thank you for the video!

  • @filmmakersrskilnand9172
    @filmmakersrskilnand9172 Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for watching! For low light a bigger sensor is always going to be beneficial. Personally, however, I still would choose the Eva 1 for a few reasons over the Lumix S5iix. The EVA 1 image is really lovely, it has proper NDs built in, xlrs on the body itself and long lasting batteries. And it records to cheap SDXC cards as well. When you add those peripheral things to an SLR with a cage, things quickly become bulky and the costs add up. The cost of a camera is no longer just the cost of a camera. The Eva1 has dual ISOs and that also helps. However, I would not choose it specifically for low light shooting, but no camera, really is built for that, bar the Fx3/ A7S3 cameras. They are really lovely in low light conditions if you want to catch the ambient surroundings. But that is my experience from shooting with cameras where you can't control the light.

    Hi Mario. I haven't seen any vignetting at all so far. At least not on the sensors I have used it on, which are the F3 and Canon C300. The Canon cameras have a slightly larger sensor and it covers those as well. It is small, portable and sharp. It does need some light to shine though. I do think the sweet spot is from 5.6 till 8, which is where these images were shot at. I bought it from Visual Products in the US. Also using the Zacuto cage and love it. So light and streamlined. My wife uses it with the Z-finder. Agree it’s spendy but very useful and reliable . I use an EVF or Atomos Shinobi external monitor. Shinobi is not bright enough in strong sunlight (we shoot wildlife so always outside) - I think it’s 1,000 nits. EVF adds a bit of complexity and weight but it’s nice. I also have NTG 5 and use a very similar battery to power it - mine is a Core battery and agree that the D-tap on those batteries is a game changer for C70. One question - doesn’t the Zacuto cage already have a built-in cold shoe right where you mounted the SmallRig cold shoe attachment? Is the SmallRig just more secure/larger? Wanted to ask you that. Good video and thanks for sharing your rig and thought process.

  • @filmmakersrskilnand9172

    Hi David. Thanks for reaching out! The cage is so nice and light weight. Sure fixes a few issues with the C70. I did own an Atomos Ninja V which in many ways is similar to the Shinobi, screen wise. I never did find the Atomos line up good enough in sunlight myself. But they do have a hefty marketing strategy pulling you in. is 1000 nits, yes. The BM assist beats it hands down in every way, also build wise. But especially in nits. 2500 is really, really nice. I think Swit has a 3000 nits monitor as well, albeit a bit larger at 7". The BM assist has been a game changer for me. So nice to shoot and edit in ProRes. No, the cold shoe is built in on the opposite side. Putting it on an angle helps keep the microphone away from the monitor. That was my reasoning anyway.

    Thank you for this comprehensive review. I've been using the XF305 for nearly a decade; when the 705 came out, we considered it but held off for the very reasons you noted with the codecs. However, we've just put in an order for the 605 which, hopefully, remedies that issue and corrects a few others in an even smaller package. I have to shoot a lot of low light settings for corporate video and am pleased at how clean the stage performance you shot looks (what was that musical about; it looks hilarious).

    Thanks Jason. I believe the 605 is one of the top cameras to get when looking for a great and compact camera that can do it all. Haven´t tried it myself yet, though. Lately I have been shooting with an A7S3/ PZ 28-135 combo and I am truly impressed with the results. The musical is actually a comedy sketch of various featurettes from the local community. It was quite hilarious yes, thanks for noticing :) And the stage performance and the 705 low light settings are the cleanest I have ever seen. I have tried both the Sony Z280 and CX350 by Panasonic. The Canon blows them both out of the water in low light situations.

    Hi. Thank you for your video. :) I'm making stop motion animation and have thought of buying this lens. I have Fuji x-t3 and Canon RP. • @filmmakersrskilnand9172
    @filmmakersrskilnand91723 жыл бұрын

    @ Yun`s dolls Hi. The Fujinon MKs are fantastic lenses, sharp and with beautiful color rendition that lend themselves to that cinematic look. It is a though question tough. Personally I would probably lean towards a native stills lens for the Canon RP but for the Fuji I could see myself lean towards the Fujinon MK lens for that more cinematic look. I am not sure how much the RP would benefit from a MK lens especially for stop animation software. I would expect more control over the camera and settings through an electronic lens via the software. If however everything is done manually, focus, aperture etc then the Fuji MK would be great choice as long as the RP can shoot in crop- mode as these are Super 35 lenses. I would expect the Fuji two have a more cinematic look and then you should be looking at the XT- mount I believe. Back in the day some of the most popular movies in Norway with stop motion techniques were shot, as fas as I know, one a 16 mm camera. One of them was called Flåklypa Grand Prix by Ivo Caprino: kzread.info/dash/bejne/p4Cf2MSgeLmqY7A.html Next year we are starting a huge animation project which we will probably shoot on Sony or Canon stills cameras with their native glass. But that will be software controlled. You say firmware on your RP so without knowing that camera specifically I guess this is a feature specifically meant for that stop motion technique in camera, right? If you are able to rent at all that could give you a good pointer as to what works best for your needs. Hope this helps?

I also concern if this lens will fully function with my canon camera (even though it has a native RF mount option now) or the software. Hope it will work for my case! Thank you!! :)

    Great video Svein! I guess you've been using the Blueshapes for a while now? Three questions; do they communicate with the camera, can you see how many minutes there are left on the display? And do you find the batteries reliable? How many do you cary for one day of work to feel safe? Thanks for helpful reviews!

    Hi. Thanks for your kind comment. Yes I have been using them for a while and they do communicate with the camera. I haven't figured out how clock accurate the run time of the battery is though. Yesterday, after reading your comment, I did a quick test and powered up the camera and BM assist and read 200 minutes on the info display. I also did a quick record but not for the duration of the battery. I got 3 hours off it so 10 minutes give or take. That is close enough for me. Yes. they are reliable and I have had zero issues with them. Charges fine and plugs in teh camera fine. I did a shoot not that long ago and only used that battery for the day. I think I ran the camera on and off from 0930- 1500 with just that battery recording internally and externally. But just in case I do carry two batteries now. I have however found that the BM recorders draw less power than the Ninja Vs so quite happy with my setup.

    @@filmmakersrskilnand9172 Thanks for your reply! I have two of these batteries now and also get 200 minutes on the display. Which is about the same as the BP-A30 from Canon. Giving the watt hours being the double i guess the runtime will be better then 200 minutes. The future will tell! :) Keep up the good work!

    Outstanding video. I just bought the c70 and the Zacuto cage. Like you I have several external monitors. I also have a small rig top handle made for the ursa mini 4.6k. If this system works out for me I’ll probably sell my Red and dive deeper into Canon’s cinema line.

    Thanks for your kind words! Truly appreciated. The C70 is a lovely camera. In image as well as operational wise. I used to shoot on a C200 which I don´t miss at all. I hope it works out for you as well!

    Thank you for the very comprehensive findings you have documented from using this camera. I'm quite interested in this camera and was very pleased to hear your words of caution about the h265 codec. I will have to hire the XF705 in and see how it performs.

    Hi Steve. You are welcome. The XF 705 is a lovely camera and in my opinion, the best in that class, bar the codec issue. Which is a shame. Proxies could be a work around as well. If you are able to hire camera that is money well spent. Workflow is just as important as the camera. Best of luck to you!

    Great vide mate, waiting on my Zacuto cage to arrive today! Going to do a very similar set up as yourself. Like the top mic placement idea.

    Thanks for the kind words George. The Zacuto is a lovely cage and the rig has worked a charm for me. Very sturdy with no loose screws or cables yet! Mounting it to the side ḱeeps the overall height down I find. I take it you may be from the land down under?

    @@filmmakersrskilnand9172 I'm from the UK actually! But based out in the Middle East for now. The rig arrived and agreed, seems great. I've decided to put the mic on the right side because for me it was too close to the Small Right side handle attached to the rosette - maybe I should have gone with a rail mounted one so I could put it a little further down. But yep, overall am happy!

    @@georgehenton Glad to hear this! I have shot a documentary in the UK which hopefully will air this summer on the NRK ( BBC equivalent) Lovely country and people! If only you could stay on the correct side of the road... I don't think there is a right or wrong side to mount the mic :) It really comes down to what fits the shooters needs, in my opinion. Feel free to give an update on how you are getting along.
