  This feels like someone dealing with a potentially terminal or dangerous illness/addiction, and after completely isolating themselves from everyone to avoid hurting them when they die or simply change too much to come back (of course harming the people when they leave while still alive + having a chance to return and heal) they're still hoping someone will come bring them back home and wonder if it'll be too late by the time they find them.
