SBG Bury Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & MMA Classes
Over 600 instructional videos from SBG Bury BJJ, a 7 day per week Jiu Jitsu and MMA, classes from 6am weekdays. We've offered Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blackbelt instruction for 9 years now and Straight Blast Gym MMA instruction since 2006. We record our BJJ Classes so that members can watch back and home study and prospective members can see the degree of instruction and dedication to technique. Gi or No Gi doesn’t matter to us; we focus on the biomechanics involved and are a JJGF registered club. We study Matt Thornton, Henry Akins, John Frankl, John Danaher and Rickson Gracie, buying their instructionals and practising their approach. We also coach on Breathing methods and strength training using isometrics creating a holistic system for a strong mind and healthy body.
Additional notes to the videos are posted at sbgbury.online

Great explanation on transfer of weight between the sitting bones and the arm. Thank you.
Thank you
Thanks for this intense lesson on hip control, what it is and how to apply. It's easier with learning concepts than single moves. With the concept the moves come (more or less) automatically bc they are about what the concept requires.
can this also be used as an unorthodox way from side control to an armbar?
Correct
if you manage to straighten (extend) the captured leg to a point it becomes a suluov stretch, immediately tap for most people
That’s a blast from the past!
I need to play with this!
Hello, Thanks a lot for your videos its amazing and I really feel its connected to the Rickson's system. I have a question. Coud you post a video wich could answer this question: how to deal with a standing opponent who has two grips on your collars and who puch you ( in addition the opponent is bent as a wrestler and has his legs and hips far away) ? Thanks a lot from France
And sometimes he doesn't push me but he put a lot of frontal resistance
One of the best at showing fundamental concepts over step by step movements and techniques.
Thank you
I totally agree with you. And that's exactly what's needed to be able to sort through the hundreds of possible moves in BJJ and understand the connections and relations. I still remember when I first saw BJJ on YT and didn't understand anything, even though it was being explained.
😈 'promo sm'
Is it preferable to try and finish the arm bar whilst fully on top, or do you need to come back down to the mat? Thanks.
Always try to finish to top of them if you can
Love it, thank you!
Thanks Nick. Hope all is well and that we will see you over the holidays
@@Burybjj thank you, I’d like that. I’ll be in touch!
Gutted I’m away for this.
@@mholland7870 it’s never to be repeated, a Black Friday special :(
@@BurybjjKZread lives forever!
Thank you for taking the time to make a new video!
Pleasure hope it made sense?
It’s hard to understand what you’re saying.
See the comments below. Torque your big toe towards his butt crack as close as you can get. Plus get your weight down near his hips, not up on his shoulder line.

So you are just turing (rotating) your foot inward? wow Will try that as soon a possible!
Yes so first turn the toe fully in. Also get all your weight down on their hips, not anywhere near their shoulders. It is an amazing lesson in weight distribution from Henry
Thank you!! @@Burybjj
@xale07 also this technique can be applied against all butterfly hooks ;)
I'm overweight or just a short stubbie guy. Having trouble of getting off the ground. Technically stand off. Help.
hollow
Rather than on your toes, have you tried “duck feet” I.e. externally rotated to say 30 degrees? If so, is there a reason on the toes is preferable?
Yes we want to be on our toes so we are pointing in the direction of the throw and our weight is distributed accordingly.
Very cool! I hadn’t seen this posted but my student Cody asked me about it. We played with it based off his recollection but now that I’ve seen this I’ll play some more.
Thanks Michael, I’m glad it’s stimulated some discussion
What great analysis. Thank you. I love the HA guard passing stuff but you're demystified the 'feel' component. Looking forward to this analysis building. Thank you Prof
Thank you, glad you are enjoying it!
🤙
Thanks for posting this. Do these exercises increase the inhale /exhale volume capacity in the lungs?
Both although balloon work is particularly good for exhalation
Thats my dad😂😂

awesome glynn
Thank you Sergio :)
these videos are really helpful, thank you so much for posting these. i've been practicing helio, rickson, sbg jiujitsu only off the available video instructionals. a lot of the material you cover in your channel really fill in the gaps of things not covered in those instructionals. again thank you so much, its really helpful to be able to see these little details.
Thank you! Glad you enjoy them and find them useful
I love these push pull sweep to de La Riva options
Thank you 🙏
Identical feelings on De La Riva! This is sort of all I like to do with it! Punish the side stepper.
Exactly! It’s essentially a guard against sporting behaviours
Still had my weight back too much
A little more sag and that’s a whole other level to deal with
This is a great drill for the guy on the bottom too
Agreed. Those late recoveries are like being on chess.com and reviewing all the moves you could have made.
Something I was noticing during the isolation rounds was that on the transition back from sprawl on the face to the side mount people were ending up very low and it was much easier to deal with. Something to practise and be mindful of maybe
Yes a great opportunity to base on the elbow for a split second and reset
Loved that arm bar at 9.24
Thank you Eoin
I can’t recall getting rolled from this position recently but I’ll play with this. It strikes me that I may have been doing this already. This is Super chill right? When I worked with Henry on this a detail that emerged is he pointed the far side elbow till the tricep was very nearly parallel to the ground. I was unable to put my hand in front of his face
Yes you showed me that gold! I don’t get rolled much from there either but personally, I’ve not been high enough. We’ve all started going higher and it’s grotesque. Nobody is getting rolled either. People weren’t going to this in class for fear of being rolled. We let them fail a few times so they can feel what they fear. Then we get them to gently start that side crunch and light bulbs go off
Getting rolled was the reason I didn't go to this position much. The crunch makes it feel so much more stable 🎉
Yes agreed. Plus even if they do begin to lift you, if you side crunch and then sprawl, you sprawl is that much more effective that you end up belly flopping on their chest / head which is gruesome for them
This is awesome!
Thank you Michael :)
Really cool
Thanks Matt
Nice !
Thank you Greg
🔥🔥
Very cool!

🔥
I think I’m echoing what Benedict has said, I always find the scissor sweep works best as they’re trying to pass. They effectively create the angle for you
100 per cent
Brilliant!
Thank you Michael 😊💪
Fascinating class today and a real lightbulb moment around the bridge movement being not limited to driving off the mat.
Thanks James. Please check out Spinal Engine Theory which was the precursor to biotensegrity. Essentially keeping the spine flexing and extending is the engine room of our body.

Very cool
Thank you
Thanks for this, me (Jacob) and Eoin were in this position about an hour ago. I was trying to bridge but couldn't make it happen. Going to try this next time
Awesome. This works!
This is exactly what I need to learn. Popped my rib again on Sunday 🤕🤒
Sorry to hear that Eoin :(
@@Burybjj Self inflicted. Got to stop doing it though! I’m focusing on it now.
It’s forced me to to roll at 60%, slow things down a bit, with better technique, which is probably what I should be doing anyway.
100% great new perspective to move forwards
genius
Thank you Sergio! :)
Philly Shell as in turtle shell
Thank you
Brilliant
Thank you Joel glad you liked it
If the guy on top is controlling your hips this would be hard to pull off. However, if his weight is concentrated higher up on your chest it will for sure work.
This is exactly Rickson’s point. Also when someone is off your hips and higher up bridging doesn’t usually work unless their posture is poor.
Gonna try this. How should the person on top react if they know bottom player will pendulum? Circle along their knees and follow the swing of bottom player's legs? I often turtle from underneath side control but I still get in trouble with my back exposed. I feel like with this escape, I'm going to have my back taken even more
Thanks for your comment. The person on top will put their weight on your hips. THIS is the perfect time to bridge. The pendulum works as a rotational escape. You combine the bridge which is a full extension of the hips (which is like the jab in boxing) with the pendulum (more like a hook) which is a full rotation. They can’t take your back if you execute this as shown. Their arm is essentially being Kimura’d and your hips are behind their hips. If you lay completely flat with no shoulder pressure by failing to touch your hand to the mat, then maybe. However I’ve not had my back taken doing this escape. The worst is when they sit on your hips and you keep going for the pendulum. If you bridge and they are trying to kill your pendulum, they will often get face planted or place their hand to the mat. Then you pendulum again.
