  “Among the flat valley...” is a poem by Alexei Merzlyakov, written in 1810 and which became a popular folk song. Like a number of other light lyrical works written around this time, the author dedicated it to his student Anisya Velyaminova-Zernova, with whom the poet and teacher Merzlyakov was in love. According to the memoirs of M. A. Dmitriev, Merzlyakov composed the entire text almost impromptu. Merzlyakov himself published this poem in his book “Songs and Romances” (1830), later it was sometimes published under the titles “Loneliness” and “Song”, but already in 1819 in the third part of the publication “The Newest and Complete Universal Songbook” “ Among the flat valleys" was published without the name of the author, like a popular song. Experts differ on the issue of the authorship of the music for the song, since the melodic accompaniment of Merzlyakov’s words was not immediately established. At first, the song was sung to the melody of Osip Kozlovsky, originally written to the words of Pyotr Karabanov (“Fly to my dear ...”). Later, the music of Stepan Davydov, gravitating toward a more epic flavor, gained popularity. Some sources also mention the name of D. N. Kashin, Merzlyakov’s constant co-author. Apparently, however, the basis for the inspiration of all three composers was a folk melody, which Merzlyakov had in mind when composing the poem.................. And what is interesting in the history of this songs, and many Russian guitarists playing the seven-string guitar turned to it, this was the first performance on a seven-string guitar with an orchestra. First! With an orchestra! This play by A.O. Sihra was performed on March 14, 1827 by guitarist V.I. Svintsov in the house of the Georgian prince (...) the play was arranged by composer A.A. Alyabyev for the chamber orchestra, and also arranged and performed medleys by S.N. Aksenov......From the newspaper....."Svintsov himself played the medley, op. Aksenov, and variations (Sikhra) extremely pleasantly to the most beautiful A.F. Merzlyakov’s song “Among a flat valley, at a smooth height”, the tone of the strings seems to spell out all the motives.” ....... A.A. Alyabyev at this time (1825 - 1827) was in prison on false charges, an investigation was underway, but it is noteworthy that at that time he (Alyabyev) was the only one of the most famous and beloved composers of the early 19th century who turned to and used in his creativity seven-string guitar. The famous "Nightingale". I first found this information back in the early 80s, and turned to the guitarist and instrument historian V. Musatov from Vladikovkaz to see if he knew about this fact, but I received a negative answer in my typewritten book “A Brief Essay on the History of the Development of Russian Guitarism " 1984 did not mention that!
