I enjoyed the dissertation and informative history and period performances. A further possible approach would be to play those historical mouthpieces on instruments of the period. I believe there would be interesting differences in tone and response. I perform period swing music often on a Selmer Modelle 22, gold plate over sliver, which my grandfather purchased new in 1925. Both my grandfather and my father played the original large, round chambered grenadilla wood mouthpiece which came with the instrument producing a very sweet, mellow sound. I have chosen to play it with a more modern, square chambered steel mouthpiece; a #5 Wolf Tayne (also sometimes branded as ‘Guy Hawkins).
@CalebBurkhardtSax Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! There are two approaches, both of which are interesting. Either play every mouthpiece on the same saxophone which gives you a better point of comparison, or play everything on the period horn. Playing an Adolphe sax, Buescher sax, SBA/Mark 6, Series 2, and a Yamaha EX would have been a cool approach.

How would you describe the difference playability, feel and sound from the s80 to the Metal Soloist?
@CalebBurkhardtSax Жыл бұрын
They are similar in the brightness and power that they bring. The metal piece is smaller in the mouth and forces your corners a lot closer. The metal piece also fluctuates in temperature more and condensation inside the mouthpiece can be a bit of an issue.
@glennhenrich992 Жыл бұрын
