I remember when Thomas Dolby was kind of a session or studio musician. Working with Lene Lovich And then went on to play on her tour back in t 84 I think it was. I was really into synth keyboardists at the time and always read liner notes to discover new people to listen to. I was pleased when I saw him on Foreigner on the Foreigner 4 album and Def Leopards album as Booker Boffin. That one took some research to find out who that keyboardist was,...
@@ekummel indeed. Read his autobiography, it’s fascinating. Thanks for comments and for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
I love Beauty Stab. It’s a great album that has themes that are still relevant today.
@@KRAZEEIZATION spot on. It’s a great album. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
This is a really interesting one. I really liked the singles off this, but they were one of those bands I kind of liked around that time, but not enough to buy their records (similarly for me Japan, Spandau, Simple Minds). Just so much great music around, and having a limited budget, remember having to be brutally selective.
@@glennaustin37 indeed. So much great innovation and music lately 70s / early 80s. Thanks for comments and watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Albeit this album was released in the penultimate year of my highschool I wouldn't call it my favorite. Which is strange: usually it's the music that people listen to in their teens that sticks with them forever. And I certainly listened the crap out of this album for the following several years. But I always looked forward to the next Killers album and I don't resent them taking me from this punk-rock-synth style to something more vegas rock-country dance-like that they morphed into. Maybe being a classical musician plays into this in the sense that as a classical musician you get such thorough training in comprehension and performance of all types of music starting with medieval estampie, continuing with modernist claptrap and ending with arrangements of an Iranian pop singer's repertoire that I have a much wider and eclectic taste for music than an average person. But with Killers I am amazed with how catchy their tunes continued to be throughout years. I find myself always returning to the album Flesh and Bones, so I guess it must be my favorite. I love the song Wonderful, it has a bizarre sound to it. I love Joy Ride with its disco bass. Human - dance anthem. Caution and My Own Soul's Warning - more county-like. Uncle Jonny. The World We Live In reminds me of Queen's This is the World We Created and I'm fond of both. Love Killers.

Not for me. Awful, and certainly not electronic ☹️
Music is subjective. Personally I beg to differ. This album has synthesisers all over it. Thanks for comments and for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
it’s subjective, but as we’ve said before even though there are synths all over this, if it’s good music we’ll feature it, thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe-Andy
@@andymcnab6848 I absolutely agree it is subjective, but this is rock, pure and simple, and personally leaves me cold.
Not exactly my style..... not electronic at all.
Music is a personal thing. Personally I beg to differ. This album has synths all over it and was totally influenced by British new wave. Thanks for comments and for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
I think it’s subjective and your of course entitled to your opinion -but this album has synths all over it, thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe-Andy
Great album

Agreed my friend thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe- Andy
Another great review. One of the best debut albums ever. When I first heard them, I thought they were British, such is the new wave/electronic influence. However, the sound is totally their own and Brandon has a great voice, with touches Englishness.
Thank you. Much appreciated. Yes agree, totally influenced by British new wave. Thanks for comments and for watching Electronic Cafe. MW

Saw him at Totally Tubular, and he was fantastic. I am kind of curious if Tom Bailey doesn't use the TT name for legal reasons, or personal? I don't get the sense that he and Alannah have much antagonism towards each other.
We are seeing him in London shortly. Thanks for sharing and for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Yello was a formative part of my youth. Oh yeah, Bostich, Vicious Game… It was a lifestyle. Then Techno came, and I more or less totally forgot Yello. There was so much to discover! Now they are back, and add new, yet familiar, sounds to my internalized acoustic archive as if they had never been gone. Beautiful. Boris, Dieter, you are heroes. (I once sat two rows behind Dieter on an airplane and felt his charisma...)
Fantastic comments. So true. Thanks for sharing and watching Electronic Cafe. MW
My favourite Soft Cell Album.
Indeed. Great edgy album. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Saw the mesmerising Ultravox! in Swansea Circles and Reading Fest in 1978. In Swansea, when Currie did a violin solo, the strobe would coincide with his bowing to the point where he seemed to be motionless, despite the energy pouring forth. Never to be forgotten. Bought the albums, with the free live EP. Great stuff. Hadn't realised he was in Visage. I went to art college (Leicester) in '79, and didn't know about the Blitz scene until I saw a few gigs where there were more bizarre and creative clothes wafting by than even in the punk gigs I saw in '77. Just as in the punk scene, stereotypes rapidly coalesced, and New Romantics appeared. But for a brief period, there were no stereotypes, and the creativity was wonderful to see. I miss those days!
Great comments, thanks for sharing and watching the Electronic Cafe. Indeed, they were great days. MW
What a nice bloke. I loved Ultravox as a child and still do. I was amazed by their sound and their music videos. Me and my brother used to rent "Ultravox The Collection" on VHS constantly. I feel so lucky I got to see the band perform live on their 2013 tour with Simple Minds I never thought in all my wildest dreams I would get to see the classic line up in the flesh! Amazingly I have only just recently listened to the John Foxx era. So ground breaking and although not commercially successful at the time I think it is rightly getting the credit it deserves. Great channel, great Interview guys!

An album of Ultravox songs mixed with orchestra, anyone? "Ultravox Orchestral"? Discuss. :-)

I'd always wondered why John Foxx's Touch and Go appeared to share some of the melody of Mr X. Billy explained (in the previous part of the interview) that he and John had been writing songs when John decided to part from Ultravox, so clearly both took some of those musical ideas on to their next projects. I'd guessed it might be something like that, but it was nice to hear it confirmed. It makes me want to review the two albums again (Vienna and Metamatic) to listen for other possible musical commonalities. While I love JF's best stuff as much as Ultravox, it must be said that of the two tracks, the awesome Mr X is just head and shoulders better than T&G (which is one of the more throwaway songs on Metamatic IMHO), although the music's used in different styles, so it's maybe unfair and/or unwise to compare.
Great comments, much appreciated. Thanks for sharing + watching Electronic Cafe. MW
As an amateur musician, I welcome every time you do a deep dive question into the music itself to hear detailed stuff. I could listen to Billy discussing that endlessly. I often wonder on individual tracks who played what, who wrote what, which instruments and effects they used, why they made certain decisions on a track, etc. :-)
Indeed, that appeals to our musical geek nature too. Thanks for supporting Electronic Cafe. MW
It's interesting that Ultravox and Tubeway Army both went from being initially more punk-based bands to experimenting - with very successful results - with synths, and then embracing the new technology.
Indeed, that was the transition for many of these great bands. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
@@electroniccafemusic This presumably means that - to my knowledge, at least - Kraftwerk and The Human League (any others?) in the early/mid-1970s are probably the true synth pop/rock pioneers, since electronic keyboards and electronic drums were the main/sole instruments they used from their earliest recordings?
All these years and for some reason - having never heard his voice before - I always thought Billy was Scottish, not a Yorkshireman! That's on me, though. I love all the music I've heard that he's been connected with, and it's great to hear him reminiscing about stuff here. It's a pity more synth artists aren't interviewed by mainstream broadcasters (even now, some people are STILL sniffy about any pop/rock music that's not entirely guitar-based), but on the other hand thanks to channels like this one for attempting to plug that gap. :-)
Thanks for your kind words and for supporting Electronic Cafe. Great comments, what you say is so true, we (Electronic Music) are music fans ourselves and we want to speak to these people and ask the questions the we (as fans) want to know the answers to. MW

One of our submarines is my ringtone. I used to like to say "every time a cellphone rings, Thomas Dolby hears 'ka-ching!'" (I realise that's not literally true, but his company Beatnik did invent the chip if memory serves, sold to Motorola, that allowed polyphonic ringtones, so I believe he made a few bob off of that bit. ) anyway, thanks so much for this, what a coup to get him to spare some time, one of the all time greats. I hope he makes more music. Bowie produced some of his best work at the end of his life, the perspective of older artists is always deep and interesting.
Great comments. Thanks for sharing and also your kind words. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
I never forgot how Bowie introduced him at Live Aid as "the Very Brilliant" Thomas Dolby. rightly so. genius. oh and he's so right about Bowie's music being deceptively simple, once I joined a Bowie tribute act as bassist, and had to transcribe his hits I realised how clever he was, it's not all verse chorus verse chorus guitar solo chorus outro, no no, extra measures, key changes so well crafted you don't even realise what he's done, nothing is straight-forward but it all glides along so smoothly you don't think about how he's doing it. I gained a massive amount of new respect for his songcraft once I had to reverse engineer what he'd created.
Fantastic comments. Thanks for sharing. Glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW

Ignore the age of consent at your peril’ London records 1984. Best non single tracks; Screaming, Junk and Love and Money. Mike Thorne’s production can’t be overstated. As a gay nineteen year old in 1984 this record had a profound impact on me. I saw Bronski Beat on their autumn 1984 tour at the Powerhouse in Birmingham. Then straight afterwards I went round the corner to The Nightingale and saw Sylvester doing a PA for his then single Rock The Box xx

What do you get when you cross Hendrix, James Brown, Rick James, Little Richard and (Whisper it) Michael Jackson? Purple Rain era Prince. Not his best album, but his pop-iest and most commercially successful. No fat, all killer. It all finally came together with great songs, a great band, a great image and a pretty good film to go with the album, pushing Prince over the top and cementing global success and fame. Once there, he released his Nebraska (but with hit singles), Around The World In A Day, to shy away from overbearing stardom, then returned to type with Parade and Sign O The Times (his magnum opus). He had it all, could do it all and more importantly, could do it all live. A breathtaking performer, as a multi-instrumentalist musician, dancer and singer.

@@electroniccafemusic algorithm for what? I don't even know what that means! If I had to, I would probably describe Prince as funk/pop.
Sorry you feel that way, it’s all subjective and whilst our sweet spot is post punk electronic music, there’s so much beyond that to celebrate and enjoy - Krautrock, ambient, dark wave, electronic dance music, shoegaze, I could go on and on but it’s what makes the EC family so cool as we celebrate music if we love it.
