Nice video, thanks... used my B3 as my primary bass for 30 years. Only this year have I replaced it as my number 1. I won't sell it.
dude's great player
Sounds great!
Thanks so much!
A very cool creation for sure. Sounds wicked good. Not a fretless player, but one is very fortunate to receive. I also have to ask for details about that blue PJ on the stand. Very curious. So tell about it here please. Thanks.
Thanks as always. The blue PJ is one of my high grade DMS custom rescue basses, with brand new pickups from SIMS, this should complete and list in the next couple of weeks.
I stepped away from Fender when I found out they were not made by Leo anymore. Yeah last Fender I had was a 1978 jazz bass. It was horrible. So a few years later. I tried out a G&L jazz bass. Was much better. Especially for the price. Now on Sire v3, v7 basses. Much better built. And half the price of Fender. Good luck Fender.
Awesome tone!!!

Do you happen to know what kind of strings Sutoh himself uses? I’ve been finding it extremely difficult to locate any information on his choice gear aside from his basses.
Sorry, I am not sure what Sutoh San himself uses. However, all newly made Moon basses come from assembly strung with D'Addario nickel rounds though. This one in the video had D'Adds on it.
@@BassJapanDirect I see. Can’t go wrong with D’addarios. I appreciate your reply, and hope to secure one of these beauties sometime next year. All the best to you this year.
I’m no master but I’m pretty good at setups. I can’t believe I couldn’t get the darn action low enough without the buzz. It’s a sound monster but what fucking good is it if you’re not satisfied with the playability. I just sold mine, thankfully I sold it for the same amount I bought it for. On the other hand, my PJ Elite and American professional 2 precision are total bad asses. Very disappointed with their latest flagship bass. I’m just glad that I’m not the only person disappointed with it.
Una belleza!
1985? Do you mean 1995?
@@MeatballCereal absolutely right, I mis-spoke. 1995!
love the video!
Hello! Do you by any chance know about brand of jazz bass from Japan named Santana? Looks kind of like a regular Greco or old Ibanez jazz bass. Almost no info on the whole internet. I thought to ask an expert :)
Sounds good.
Nice
Im trying to decide between a bacchus woodline 5, a nordy VJ5, and a bottom wave 70s deluxe... struggling lol
I would consider Moon or Atelier Z too as equally great options. Woodline are sadly currently suspended due to factory being overrun with OEM orders.
JEsus this sounds good
Hey I sent you a message on instagram! asking about these..
Answered!
Looking at a bacchus wood line or a nordy vj5 for double the price…
The Nordies are great, but these are probably better made (neck stability, precision of finishing and fretwork) to be frank. With the yen so weak now it is a great time to invest in MIJ instruments!
@1:42 !
I have a Pan Jazz exactly like this Elk. 74 or 76, I think. Sounds incredible, 40mm nut and thicker profile. I had to replace the electronics on mine. It helped as the originals were noisy and 500k. The pickups are amazing...Great buy!
Very nice!
Sounds great. Nice Chick Corea riff ;-)
What part was the Chick riff?? Also where’s it from?
@@GoodGod93 I meant the song Spain, played by Chick an his band, with John Patitucci on a video on KZread.
Interesting, I thought the only lawsuit MIJ guitars were the jazz boxes that copied the L5. I’m looking to purchase a precision type bass guitar just for therapy and fun. I’m in Tokyo and would like to reach out to you and chat about some options. Enjoy the channel. Domo!
@@yokosomike sure, feel free to make an appointment to drop by! We're just a 15 min metro ride from Tokyo Station. Fender lawsuit guitars and basses have been a big thing in Japan since the early 70s afaik. Catch you later hopefully!
Sounds great
Crikey! That's lively!
The atelier Z pre amp is wicked good. Has such great tone. Atelier Z has good workmanship too.
My GOD that sounds amazing. Love that the active eq is completely optional but with it engaged it sounds so much better. I think “mouthy” is the best word to describe that 3 way mids switch with.
That's definitely a great word for it!
Looks similar to the History advanced series with the three knobs parallel to the bridge
Always liked the Atelier Z stuff. The Baby PJ thing would be right up my street but I think that's insta-divorce!
Is it still possible to order a maple wood line bacchus similar to this one? I know it’s an old video and they discontinued their woodlines.
woodline are on hold for a while, it will be possible to order them brand new from next year. I might be able to source you used or ex-demo options though if you are interested.
What’s replacing their wood line series now that they discontinued them?
They are just on hold because the factory is so busy with OEM stuff this year. I was told maybe late 2024 or into 2025 they will make some more woodline runs.
i have the same bass with 2 pickups and its from 1979
Absolutly beautiful! Thank you for doing this, you are truly a gift to the bass world!!
Killer
What is that Semi hollowbody yamaha next to you?

Hello, I have one of these, and I believe the tone knob may be out. Do you mind sharing what electronics you replaced this with? Or perhaps a link to a wiring harness? Also how much would this guitar run in good condition? From what I see it would go from $500 to $1000 USD? Also is this a jazz style bass? Sorry for a million questions. Thanks in advance. Excellent work by the way!
These are a bit rare, yes a Jazz bass essentially. In good condition $500 would be reasonable at todays exchange rates, definitely not 1000 though unless a very rare color in mint all original condition. Wiring is a simple three way toggle switch to volume, and tone. That's it. there are wiring diagrams out there all over the web for that. Just google "jazz bass with three way toggle switch, wiring" and you'll get lots of results. ATB!
@@BassJapanDirect An update for anyone in the future: the guitar's electronics were not the problem. It was user error haha. I was plugging my guitar straight into a line level input on a mixer so an impedence mismatch was squashing my tone. Thank you so much for the info. Glad I found your channel by the way. Cheers!
nice build, any Fender jazz od P neck will fit that sweet Greco correct?
the neck is a bit slimmer at the joint than a fender so no it won't be a direct fit without widening the pocket 1mm on each side.
for us broken back bassists, how much does she weigh ?
This is not that bad considering it is solid walnut, only 4.18kg or 9.2lbs
Beautiful Z, and it sounds great! I've taken up bass this year, but I've been Tomohito Aoki fan for a long time! I hope too one day, (when I become good enough at bass!) buy an Atelier Z.
Hello @bass japan direct. I am trying to get a jazz bass kazuki arai V vontage natural. Could you please help me to buy this bass guitar?
@@juancarlosenriquez42 yes no problem. Do you need assistance just buying and shipping or actually sourcing one as well?
I want one of these
H, I've filled out the form for my first order. Excited to hear from you.
@@je-moto we will be back to you ASAP! Cheers
It took 5 Fender Ultra P-basses to get me one that even worked. I'm sticking with Sandberg for the long haul.
i know this is an old vid, but what do you think of these vs moon and the fgn neo classic basses?
FGN are all made with CNC so the fit is not as tight as Momose and Moon, also the grade of materials is not quite so high either. FGN are excellent value though, great for the money...but you can feel the difference when you go onto a hand made Moon or Momose. Those builds are special. Sound wise, there is not a huge difference, although I find Moon to be the best of the three. You get what you pay for though, my money would be on Moon personally.
@@BassJapanDirect thanks, that is very helpful. i'll save up for a moon for my next :)
Some mad skills my friend. Cheers
I have heard that the MIJ traditional 60s model does not have access to the truss rod and therefore, the neck must be removed to make an adjustment. If that is correct it make this model a no go for me personally. That is a shame when you consider how well priced and how well made they are.
This is true, these are essentially trying to keep the aesthetics of original Fenders so you have to pop up the neck for adjustment. It doesn't take long, but it is much easier to just have a truss rout.... That is why I offer my customers a truss rout for as little as $15 if they need it.
@@BassJapanDirect That is handy to know because I would like to get my first P-Bass and perhaps this is an option. I also want to put flat wound strings on it so, it would require a tweak I'm guessing as the tension rate is different.
@@user-eb3hz8mg2y That's correct, you'd need some adjustment for string changes. That can all be handled here if you want to get one. Cheers for now
Cool!!! Is this your own composition!!
Thanks! This is based on a piece I was practicing written by a friend of mine, but modified a bit. The chords and tempo are based of his piece as is the Latin riff (which is quite a common motif in Afro Cuban / Salsa). The vocal melody and words I made up based on his title "Out Tonight". (His melody is quite different)
Hey Danny, love your channel! I'm interested in purchasing either a Dragonfly or Moon bass. Do you know if Dragonfly and Moon manufactures their own bass like Momose, Fujigen, etc or do they get another factory to do it for them? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for following my little biz! So dragonfly are made in-house, moon are made by PGM in Nagano. PGM is basically a collaborative of all the leading high end makers in Nagano. Because dragonfly are in-house, they can be more flexible than Moon. If you have further questions don't hesitate to contact me again. Cheers!
