Fantastically useful Don thank you. Once you’ve explained and demonstrated it it seemed obvious but it hadn’t been before! I’ve been struggling to paint an ancient door and am now keen to try it again 😊
I'm horribly detail oriented, which makes any painting I try stiff and 'unreal' - everything lives in the uncanny valley... This is an awesome tutorial! I sketch in pencil, and always go for 'realistic'... but I want painting to be more painterly! This helps hugely!

Hi TheMagpie123,,,, thank you!Friend Don
Hi Don. Thank you for another great tutorial. I was wondering if you ever sketch out your painting first and also I notice that you rarely use round brushes. I received your books and haven’t worked through them yet. I’m still engrossed in trying things from your great tutorials. Cheers from Australia.
Hi TheMagpie123,,,, yes, for finished paintings I always sketch first but for little quick demos, sometimes yes, sometimes no.Brushes,,,,, in the old days I painted with mostly round and alittle bit flat,,,nowadays it's mostly flat alittle bit round, I don't have a real reason but flats create larger shapes, rounds are more for details! Hope this helps! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! Friend Don,,,,,gday mate!
I can see John Pike in this fine painting. Compliments! The first one we see on KZread to show what we will see. Nice..

Ditch the music segments. Not needed ever❣️
Is the opera or fusia lightfast?
Hi Shell,,,,,I often hear this comment about Fuchsia (opera) being fugitive, however I've been using it for over 40 years and I haven't seen any fading to date. I'm sure if a painting were exposed to ultraviolet (sun) light for a period of time the Fuchsia would fade but so would many, if not all others. Paintings are generally hung under florescent lighting which isn't a fraction of the strength of ultraviolet light. I'm no scientist and I haven't done any testing but until I see evidence I'm using Fuchsia,,,,I just love it! Friend Don
Do you mind if I ask which brand of paint you use? Because different brands have different hues on their Raw Sienna, for example, so you get widely differing results. :)
Hi Hannah,,,, you are so right,Cerulean blue is different in every brand of paint! I've been using American Journey (Cheap joes art stuff) for over 20 years,I like their 37 ml tubes and are well priced,,, Hope this helps! Friend Don

I have taken an indescribably wonderful workshop in San Miguel in the 90's. You are the best! Patsy
Hi Patricia,,,thank you, San Miguel is special!!!
I love that curtain of colors. That's a very effective technique. And you manage to achieve nice modulation and contrast in several ways: contrasting colors/temperatures, lighter and darker tonal variations, and highly saturated versus muted grays. All while 'lifting' the curtain down toward the horizon to back light the trees, house, and land masses. A really nice study!
Hi David,,,thank you for your kind words,,,I appreciate it! Friend Don
Thank you, for sharing your experience and talent . I like the background, it is bright and colorful, instead of gray like I usually add to a background.

There is a Robert E wood who paints in oils; he has a grandfather of same name.. which one are you referring to?
Hey Old Man,,,, You are correct that there was an oil painter Robert Wood well known for his land and seascapes with reproductions popular in furniture and home furnishings stores all across the US back in the 50s,60s but that's not Bob,,,,, to end the confusion my mentor began signing his paintings Robert E. Wood ( Earl ).
