  The scene with godzilla tailed swipe the buildings while he turned around in minus one ,that was a homage to imagination sequence a writer was thinking about as he was writing a novel in always where a kaijus tailed swipe across a house as the kaiju destroy tokyo and that kaiju the fictional writer imagined it as godzilla completely destroying it

  The reason is they released minus one on late 2023 is so it does not get in the way with godzilla x kong that was this year 2024. Meaning they don’t want to both godzilla movies released in the same year

  Guys, I am very confused, no shock there. Your ‘casts haven’t shown up on KZread so I couldn’t reply then suddenly here you be! I suspect that Rumiko Takahashi photo might have been taken at the ‘80 SDCC. Or was it ‘83? A whole ‘little Tokyo’ was made in the dealer room, and I recall Takahashi was MAJOR MAD because soooo many nascent otaku were bringing her bootleg crap to sign. Had to be ‘83….no, the signing anger was the ‘90s because that created J.A.I.L.E.D. and that thing did NOTHING to stop the Chinese wall hangers, Taiwan SM CDs, Korean Gundams and Dragonball Dragonball Dragonball. 😆 Quite the impressive list of ‘70s dystopia SF going on there guys! All the greats! But no love for the last Yul Brenner film, The Ultimate Warrior? Can I have my Wicdonalds without MOE please? PLEASE!!! So we live in a world where Bandai is re-releasing the old ‘Mazinger Z riding a tricycle’ tin toy yet nothing, nothing except video for the 50th of Yamato. Even with a new ‘series’ streeting. I am crushed. Always great to hear you guys. Do not stop. 👍

  Def Jam wasn't founded until 1983, so definitely post-that (some speculate that the pic could even be from the 1990s). I try to upload the latest episodes to KZread, but Substack and Spotify get higher priority. so check those out for the latest free episodes as it's a bit of an afterthought here, although we are happy you are listening!

Not being ‘down’ with the rap I had no idea of the founding date, but that makes me think even more that might be the ‘90s SDCC she appeared at which led to the J.A.I.L.E.D. thing. I can listen on Spotify but I can’t comment! How can I ‘writ moar’ like the old days on Toybox DX otherwise? 😁

  ‘Gross National Charisma’ is an amazing phrase! I am glad you two are OK, between the earthquake and that plane crash (with SO FEW deaths! ), it seems Japan had become Michael Bay-land. But the REAL tragedy is that the new WAVE 1/24 scale Scopedog costs 9,900 Yen!! And don’t get me started on that anniversary Mazinger Z Soul of Chogokin! But seriously, glad you’re both OK.

  Another fun episode. Happy holidays, guys! Actually, the director of Pulgasari, Shin Sang-Ok, was investing the disappearance of his ex-wife, Choi Eun-Hee, from Hong Kong in 1978. When he went looking for her, he himself was captured by North Korean forces. After years of separate humane but strict imprisonment followed by multiple escape attempts by Shin, they were finally reunited five years later at a dinner party where he revealed his plan for them to not only make movies for Kim and North Korea's entertainment, but to be remarried! How romantic... After Pulgasari was completed, the pair traveled to Austria for a film festival. They managed to slip past their escorts and escape to the US embassy in Vienna where they requested political asylum. Eventually, they resettled to Los Angeles, where Shin worked under the anglicized name Simon Sheen and directed/produced two of the infamous 3 Ninjas movies. Finally in 1994, Shin moved permanently back to South Korea followed by his wife in 1999. He continued to work on movies until his death in 2006. Choi later passed away in 2018. How this hasn't become a major motion picture yet is beyond me 😅

  To continue Matt’s unhappiness, the lack of the American presence really stood out to me. They tried to hand wave this with the whole “America is very concerned with the Soviets right now and don’t want to escalate tension…” and I was calling B.S. in my head. IIRC MacArthur had a deep love for Japan, but even if I have that wrong he could never ignore all the Americans who would have died in the Tokyo attacks. And how the hell did Japan have a functioning tank battalion, and some of the worst undergunned tanks ever made to boot. So yeah. There were aspects of the film that hit wrong. But I still loved it because it didn’t suck compared to Amerigoji films. So there. And Coca-Cola 4 LIFE you suckas! 😆

  Good to hear Patrick has a new book out, maybe it’s time to refresh ‘Cruising the anime city’, I’m sure there’s been a change or two… 😁 I loved Godzilla minus one. I want more but I really don’t know where they go with it and maintain the quality. OTOH I am an insane person that would dig a remake of Gorath. 🖖

  It's weird that the last toy hunting video I made in the Akihabara Mandarake a few weeks ago was the first time I noticed any of the "no photos / cameras" signs STILL REMAINING. Actually, I didn't notice them at first and got the dreaded Spacium Beam X attack from one of the staff, which did indeed "shock" me. Apparently it's only on the floor in the Mandarake Complex with all the retro video games. None of the toy floors had them, and staff didn't care. I asked the video game floor staff why, and they didn't have a clear answer 🤷 I did at least apologize and mention that their signs were very small and confusing since their other shops and floors didn't have the same policies.

  I swear those sounds in the intro sounds like sound effects from those vintage games. Like those 2D ones. I've had a Nintendo DS but I've never really played actual older games - though some remasters did have similar sounding sound effects.
