Why don't you cut the turnings into smaller bits BEFORE you weigh them? No danger of the bits flying about then!

You can certainly do that if you prefer but it will make it more difficult to get your small pieces to weigh them.

My trick is to hold it perpendicular to the beaker and touching the bottom. This closes the hole at the bottom of the pipette making it much easier to manipulate and control the speed of the flow.

I think 3B and 3A are labeled incorrectly. The steps you did for 3A correspond with 3B in the lab manual.
