A lot of people are speculating an emotion to rival Joy. I watched the first film carefully and watched theories on how the 4 new emotions rival the 4 other core emotions. Fear tried to plan ahead to prevent future failure, only to panic when something actually went wrong, so Anxiety manifested from this as a way to actually plan ahead to prevent future failure... But by suppressing Fear, Anxiety has no balance and will cause Riley to overthink everything without considering how likely an actual event may occur. Disgust focused too much on wanting to impress others, without considering whether they need to be impressed, or worth impressing, so Envy manifested from this as a way for Riley to actually interact and get closer to new people to find out what would actually impress them... But once again by suppressing Disgust, Envy is left unbalanced and may just feel the need to impress someone who is not worth Riley's affection. Sadness seemed to reminisce about memories that Joy considered to be happy, but Sadness reminded Joy about the true nature of those memories, and the not so joyful baggage that came with them, but neither Joy nor Sadness wanted to let go of any memories no matter how insignificant or depressing they might have been (like Riley's urge to quit hockey), so Ennui manifested to counterbalance the need to let go of insignificant or depressing memories (meaning Riley actually may finally quit hockey, thinking she's bored with it)... Which leads to the problem of Sadness and Joy being suppressed, so Ennui will be unbalanced and deem anything worthy of letting go. Anger always caused a scene without thinking about the consequences of making Riley look foolish in the eyes of others, so Embarrassment manifested to counterbalance this... But with the core emotions suppressed, and Anxiety at the helm, Riley will be too anxious and afraid of embarrassing herself to actually be herself in front of others, and will rely on Envy and Anxiety to guide her through situations. So as for Joy, throughout the first film, Joy always tried to put a positive spin on even the worst scenarios, seemingly coming across as optimistic in the face of a pessimistic situation... But Joy's overuse of trying to be positive, can actually be seen as being in denial, suppressing other emotions to try and keep Riley happy, even when she should be dealing with her problems, not ignoring them. This is why Joy doesn't get a rival emotion, because she is her own enemy, but also her own hero. If Joy were to focus too much on denial, then that would just manifest Optimism... But like I said, too much optimism just turns into Denial, which would still be a part of Joy. Joy is a complicated emotion to try and split, because Joy itself is an amalgamation of a very intricate set of sub emotions that when split, just don't work without each other, or contradict each other in too many ways. The absence of Joy from the control room in the first movie let Depression influence the remaining emotions until they could lock out the table and leave Riley numb to the world around her. It wasn't until Joy returned that they were able to take control back and remove the state of emptiness that filled the room. Joy is not just happiness, Joy is the core of Riley's personality, and cannot be split. She can only be rivaled by her own absence.

Every story beat in the teaser looks like the original. She goes on a voyage with Maui across the ocean to figure out a calling. It’s not a self discovery journey like before but it’s a discovery journey nonetheless. I’m a little biased since I didn’t like Moana originally but I’m still going to go in with an open mind on the day of the release.
