it's probably not personal. Based on what I've seen, he mostly prefers dark/pulp fantasy, and he's very big on "rules light", which Baptism Of Fire is not.

PDM recently announced he’s been fighting cancer and the treatment has affected his energy etc. It seems reasonable that he’s just not gotten to it. Especially since he liked and reviewed LotFP, which has as much hate from the left as anything Pundit’s done, to my knowledge

I intend to use the Slav history and non-christian mythlogy in my fantasy setting. RPG Pundit creates quality products, it's apparent. I bought the pdf and have enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendation.

Baptism of Fire is derived from Lion & Dragon. Lion & Dragon was my house system for my Dark Albion campaign. That campaign started as a Lamentations of the Flame Princess game, until we evolved it to L&D. LotFP was a heavily modified version of B/X.

I feel like a child next to you. I started playing Dungeons & Dragons when I was 13 years old, when it was released here in Brazil, with that beautiful art by Jeff Easley. Six months later, there was no material available here, such as adventures or scenarios, and we wanted to pass the second level, so we started playing AD&D 2e, which was what we found in the few bookstores that imported the material to Brazil. I didn't have the opportunity to get to know the first edition (don't fight me, please 😂). Since I played AD&D 2e for most of my life, I got used to its rules. Other than that, in addition to the Tolkienian fantasy, I really like the Dark Sun setting. Maybe it should be a separate game like Gamma World was. Well, having said all that, thanks for the video.

Pretty sure Professor DM has those same "wackadoo left wing viewer views" as you call it. Let's just say I'd be surprised... he's a college professor in the north-east. Not that it matters, but probably plays into why he may not like this game. (I assume its not woke? Idk anything about it)

You're assuming Professor DM owes you something. It's his channel. He's never reviewed some games I like. He doesn't owe me. I don't whine, I don't assume there's a conspiracy. I don't presume that I know how he should run his channel better than him. Plus... y'know... freedom of speech... he can talk about what he wants, not what I think he should want to. Further, saying you don't want to review something that you don't like is hardly a cop out. He's only got a certain amount of time to dedicate to reviews and, presumably, he'd like to spend his time sharing things that excite him (something you say you do) rather than spending his time on something not to his taste especially when giving a negative review might scare away people who would have enjoyed it had they not heard a bad review.... this way they can judge it without bias themselves. As far as him being paid to review.... I'd argue he's paid to produce videos that generate ad space... that doesn't require him to review everything ever even if it does happen to be your latest obsession. You don't own him. Or any reviewer. Also you say you don't want to judge people but then immediately say that if they don't do what you want then they're doing something wrong and then you begin the personal attacks. Seems a bit hypocritical to me. Sounds to me like you very much want to judge people. As to your comment on RPG-Pundit... don't know them, can't speak to that.... but this video doesn't make me keen to look at Baptism of Fire or to continue watching your videos. It just seems like one guy whining that more people don't agree with him. Which is probably part of why Professor DM doesn't do negative reviews.... just comes across as whiny. But that's cool.... I have dozens of games still to play.

Never heard of BoF RPG until this video, but checked it out briefly to see what it was. Looks awesome. Couldn't determine what rules it's based on, though. Does anyone know if it's a B/X, advanced D&D, 2nd edition, or some other version OSR game? I may need to check this game out, pending these details. Thanks! Not sure about QB, but would expect the Prof to review this game at some point, because he is a big supporter of the indy scene.

For me personally, If I was doing reviews and I said "I don't review games that I don't like," that could mean several different things. It might mean that my time is limited and I don't want to spend it on something I don't like. It could also mean that I don't want to promote something I don't like and would prefer to promote something that I think deserves it. I would rather spend time talking about what's good than what's bad. That's not a cop-out or "trying to be everyone's friend," it's just me choosing where to spend my limited resources. As I get older (and hopefully wiser) I find that positivity is important to me. If I don't like something, I don't need to review it or tell people about it. I just put it out of my head and move on. I've had many conversations with friends and family which start with "I just read this amazing book" but very few that start "I read a really boring book that I didn't enjoy. Have a seat and let me tell you about it."

Greetings! Yeah, and something else has occurred to me. Think about how Professor DM, Kelsey of Shadowdark, Runehammer, Baron Raup, Questing Beast, and Victor Gorchev talk and behave when they are interviewed or participating in streams. They talk about their games, as well as other games and game designers. They are always fun, polite, and positive. They are pleasant, courteous, and well-mannered. They are not interested in critiquing others, slinging mud, or being immature, rude, and snide to others. Watch their videos and streams. Watch several from each of the above. Then, watch RPG Pundit, and think about the differences. That is why Professor DM is likely not interested and never will be interested in reviewing Baptism of Fire. It is unfortunate, but RPG Pundit is constantly *defensive*, like a beaten dog. Always crowing about HIS book, HIS ideas, and how HIS perspective is iron-clad and right on everything. Even when Pundit may actually be RIGHT on something--whatever--he is still WRONG in the results. He drives people away and presents a negative, arrogant, self-righteous attitude that is repulsive to many. When you watch the other people's videos and streams, you can easily see how they don't want anything whatsoever to do with someone like RPG Pundit. Like it or not, that is just the harsh truth. Pundit often comes across as petty, jealous, self-centered, arrogant, smug, abrasive, and even rude, insulting, and belligerent. Out in the real world, that kind of attitude and behavior doesn't win many friends. It turns people off, immediately. It is just such a wall of resistance that RPG Pundit has built himself--that has largely created this dynamic. It is unfortunate, because RPG Pundit would surely be even more successful within the industry--but his attitude, his behavior towards others, his rude commentary, jealousy, pettiness, and so on--has created that social gulf where many other members of the hobby prefer to avoid him, and ignore him and anything he does, entirely. I think that is what the deeper motivation for why Professor DM and others entirely ignore Pundit. Semper Fidelis, SHARK

@@calvanoni5443 Greetings! Fair enough, my friend. I honestly have only a limited exposure to Baron Raup--where with the others, watch a half dozen videos from them, and then watch Pundit. The contrast is HUGE and eye-opening. That huge contrast is what came to my mind when listening to James, in discussing why Professor DM entirely ignores RPG Pundit. I wish Pundit would be more self-aware, more humble, more graceful, and tactful. But, the reality is what it is. Semper Fidelis, SHARK

I purchased the BoF based on your positive review and enthusiasm alone. I like the page layouts, artwork and the dive into the folkore and mythology of that period/region. That being said, I will judge it once/if I play it. A piece of advice for anyone trying to sell a product, the seller never wants to come off as antagonistic to possible customers, or get baited into chat-fights because it never helps the image (real or percieved). Keep it classy. Yes, the Left/Right divide is a big thing in the gaming community but it can be mitigated to a degree. As always James, I appreciate your content.

Greetings! James, I think something you are missing is the distinct dynamic that there are many people in the hobby that do not like RPG Pundit. Their animosity is also not necessarily anchored in politics, but rather personality, manners, and behaviour. Do you notice that there are many of these game hobby luminaries that do not bother to attack or criticize Pundit--instead, they ignore him entirely. They simply do not engage him in anything. Pundit is not engaged in discussion, he is not invited on streams, he is not sought after to cooperate in new game projects, and so on. Burning bridges is a real thing. People are not required to like something, including a particular game. And while you may seek to separate personal feelings from an author--the fact is, others are not required to do so. The absolute cricket-silence concerning Pundit by many in the hobby speaks volumes. Just the other day, on DD's stream, Pundit ran his mouth and behaved rudely and in a very self-centered manner, seeking to disparage other games and game designers--while praising and being self-aggrandizing for himself--and many people called him out for being rude, and even mentally unstable. Some customers even declared that Pundit had lost them as a customer, because of his behaviour. Not his politics--but his behaviour. That is part of social dynamics and social reality. Semper Fidelis, SHARK

Terrain and Miniatures are a connected hobby to the TTRPG hobby. They aren’t necessary but they do enhance the player experience. Although I don’t have your skill with painting miniatures or building terrain, I do take the time to ensure that my table presentation at conventions is appealing. This is why I like purchasing starter sets, which often have maps, handouts, a GM screen, tokens, specialty dice, etc. Overall, caring about presentation is appreciated by the players and therefore enhances their experience at your table. For many, theater of the mind alone is too dependent on two factors. First, the GM must describe the scene in such a way that the players can accurately envision the scene as the GM intends it. Secondly, the players have to have the ability to envision a scene accurately without visual prompts. As the axiom goes, “a pictures tells a thousand words”. Visual is always better than the best verbal description.

I heard the news from a family member, and the first news report I watched was from some woman reporter acting all shocked and awed that this was happening in the united states. I couldn't refrain from speaking to the TV in disbelief that she could be so oblivious as to WHY something like this would happen at a political rally. Friggin guy just made Trump a shoe-in after that fist pump when compared to Biden. I really fear for our children's future in this age of word salad and appearances vs actions.

I really came late to the party. I started in the mid-90s at the age of 13 with a local german game-system (Midgard) and stayed with it a really long time before I tried out something different. It was AD&D 2nd at that time that caught my attention and I really loved it (including the additional books). I have to say, that we almost always played homebrewed adventures so I have no memory of game modules of that time. Then I quited playing for a long time due to my work-load and missing freetime. We started a new group 2016 with 5E. At first I didn't noticed what was missing. We stopped playing 5E after one campaign. Now I am 46 years old and we started an Old-School-Essentials campaign this year. I really like the feel of that game. The pure heart and soul of a game as it was meant to be played. It is now that I got into it and started buying the old AD&D 1E books. Now I know what was missing in 5E. It is the feeling of real adventure and danger that I never got out of 5E. My players need a bit more time to adjust to the old-school-systems. As I did they grew up in a power-play-environment and it is hard to let go the old habits. But I am sure it will pay out in the end. Thank you for giving insights. I really like your channel.
