    In my country where Chinese brands are available, Tesla is way out in front but the Chinese brands BYD and MG are having an impact by offering very good entry level cars at reasonable prices. The KIA and Hyundai, Polestar(Volvo) offerings are good but it is the entry level prices which are most interesting to watch.

    America is going to be left in the dust, with only one on-shore EV manufacturer, while the rest of the world advances and American automotive experts opine about seatbelts being an unnecessary luxury item. Just in the news today - more protectionist measures to coddle American uncompetitive industries.

    Wrong question. Is manufacturing evolving to lower costs of manufacturing? Everything keeps getting more expensive and only Tesla is innovating new ways to lower production costs. To many companies just focus on installing new tec. so the vehicle gets more advanced, but at the same time the vehicle price increases dramatically. What percent of buyers can afford $100k vehicles? It is like your question is misleading, yes tec. and safety are meeting customer demands, but what about customers needs for lower cost vehicles, are companies adequately evolving for that NEED. No. How many years did Sandy promote castings and no one wanted to use them? Perfect example on how the OEMs are NOT meeting customer pricing needs.

    My biggest pet peeve is the lack of designing in maintainability. The key to reducing consumer pricing, and contributing to the waste stream is having the car fixable and repair parts and supplies reasonably priced. And repair information readily available.

    It's disappointing that in the US market we still don't have a good selection of small trucks with high utility options. Thinking here about Toyota's recent bare bones platform. At least there the DIY person can choose how to build out the bed platform. But in general a small compact truck with smart utility functions is still highly desirable. However it seems we are still living in a world where the mentality is to just put a box on the back and call it a day. But a truly convertible modular design would be a huge plus. The Cybertruck is a perfect example of that old model of thought. As one simple example, here in the US we don't even have folding truck bed sides like on a Kai truck or similar.

    I had semi-serious dizziness/light headedness. I thought it was low blood sugar. I needed to get a Snickers bar ASAP. Only FSD got me to the store safely. I barely got to the checkout, almost ate it first, then paid. Then I had 20 minute drive home. I used FSD to my driveway. Could I have made it? Probably, but knowing the car was going to keep me safe if the worst happened. The fact that I wouldn't have been able to get home without FSD because too risky. Thankfully after a couple hours I was fine. Hoping it isn't a precursor to stroke/heart attack. Either way. No other car could have bailed me out like my Tesla.

    Look at BYD for rapid evolution. More R&D engineers than all US-based automakers combined. 24 months from development start to full production. ~3-4 year product cycles, with new generation platforms under the new generation vehicles (not just a new body on an old platform). They are engineering cost out faster than prices are dropping, with a 28.1% automotive gross margin 1Q (offset somewhat by a 71% YoY increase in R&D). Engineering cost out, rather than squeezing suppliers or trying to squeeze more years out of older platforms. They already have vehicles beyond 800v and are bringing innovations like electromagnetic suspension to production vehicles... Protectionism isolates us somewhat in the US, but the evolution is happening very quickly for the vehicles we can't get.

  • @tsedge99
    @tsedge9925 күн бұрын

    Yes, from a US perspective Tesla is fantastically innovative but from a European perspective they aren't in the running, given how limited their model range is and how slowly they release new hardware compared to the Chinese competition (who have a ton of different EVs each all at affordable prices). The race is already over here and Tesla didn't win. Yes they will still sell a bunch and have a good minority market share but they have zero chance of dominating the market. If only they'd offered a range of affordable cars; they have some of the best tech, software and factories but it matters little if you don't produce the wide range of affordable vehicles that people want to buy.

  • @edwardhackett-jones8126
    @edwardhackett-jones812625 күн бұрын

    @@tsedge99that is a somewhat fictitious interpretation. Tesla is doing very well in Europe as it is everywhere. It is losing market share, but that was always inevitable, given that for a long time, there was almost nothing but Tesla available. Chinese cars will do very well here, but they’re not yet. BYD has been shipping vastly increased volumes in recent months but they’re sitting unsold at this point. Tesla’s range of five vehicles has an enormous advantage over other manufacturers with their 20 or so models - they get true economies of scale, while the others don’t.

    BYD are highly conservative following a 20C gameplan for automotive success. Model numbers do not count and are counter to manufacturing efficiency and ROIC. Tesla spends more on R&D (>US$10B in 2024) than all the automotives together, but not just on automotive hardware. Compute, data and AI software is the goal and the moneymaker. BYD do not believe autonomy is possible, Telsa is all in on AI and robotics.

  • @larryevans6739
    @larryevans673924 күн бұрын

    @@waynerussell6401 You are mistaken on Tesla's R&D spend ($4 B in 2023). Tesla spends less than BYD and does it in a country where each dollar does not go as far. And their spend is less focused as well. R&D expenditure is in their income statement under operating expenses.
