    Hey Gamecitizen. I love your videos and I’m thinking about playing again. Can you recommend any good servers?

  • @gamecitizen
    @gamecitizenАй бұрын

    Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the videos! :) My recommendation would be, for the most people, iRO. But it depends on your location. The official servers of ragnarok have ip block, so, depending where you are, you will have to use a VPN to play on iRO. I play on bRO, the official Brazilian server, and I use VPN to play on it. To play on iRO, I also used VPN. Any good VPN will be all right, and usually the first month is for free, so you can test it. Now, regarding private servers, I'm must say I am a bit outdated. I played on some private servers until a couple of years ago - until Gravity started hunting the big one, Nova. That had a tremendous impact on the private server landscape. Many servers shut down at that time. Since then, many have re-opened. But I will wait a bit, and see which private ones will last. For me, Ragnarok is the perfect background game; that is, a game that you play for a month, stop, and return after several months. Because of that, I think stability is the most important aspect of any server. And that is why, when I suggest, I recommend official servers (not that they never shut down, it happened with the old european server, but it's been a while since an official server has shut down).

  • @chibiichen

  • @gamecitizen
    @gamecitizen2 ай бұрын

    Well, iRO has many more players than the european server. That alone makes iRO better. However, depending on the style of gameplay, you might have an excellent time at the european server. It's been a while since I last logged on the European server, but iRO got many updates and the playerbase even grew a little bit last year! However, you will need a VPN to play there, and if you are intending on a different play style, you might actually enjoy the european more. Having less players, the market is a bit cold, compared to iRO. But, if you want to farm your gear by yourself or with friends, the european server can be a good choice! Since it is free to play on both, I highly recommend you try by yourself!

    This game was really only “good” for about a year and it was quickly replaced by other games. People can’t even really agree on what that one year is, either-alpha, pre transcendence, transce. Trickster had more freedom, wow had better quests, Mu was edgier, gw had better pvp, and mabinogi had better atmosphere. The current state of the game emphasizes daily so much that if you’re not rotating dozens of characters and doing the same things over and over you’re‘wasting’ time.

  • @gamecitizen
    @gamecitizen2 ай бұрын

    Well, if people disagree on what year was the best, it means that the game was good for many years, but for different people! I always loved the market system in Ragnarok, and jobs like blacksmith and alchemist, and also that "anime-vibe"! I don't think there is one single think that made Ragnarok a good game, nor that it was the best at some specific thing, but, overall, it had a mix of different qualities, making it tasting unique, back in the days!

    Ragnarok really managed to make so many parts of the world have some value: cards, crafting materials, pet tame item, converters. Lower lvl players can still make reasonable money farming low areas because high lvl players prefer farming something that gives exp and money at the same time. So few games make low-mid areas seriously relevant for high level characters which makes it so you can only start engaging with the economy/trading once you're at the end. Reliance feels like a core pillar to learn from RO. If you no longer rely on anyone for anything, you get renewal and there's not the same sense of being in a world together and finding your place.

    I've been writing a script for a video on why I've been playing a game that is 20 years old. On my part, I think it has to do with some nostalgia, but also some connection with a part of myself that I might have lost, that childhood/teenager part. Back then, I had no friends and I had a really hard time at school. So, playing Ragnarok was a escape from reality already back in 2005-2009. Of all game genres, I think MMORPGs had a larger impact on the young players' lives. Almost like it became part of our identity.

  • @gamecitizen
    @gamecitizen3 ай бұрын

    Well, it depends. Let's take old Ragnarok as example. In order to make potions, you would need an alchemist with high DEX and LUK. That wasn't an easy feat. On the other hand, it was much easier to farm herbs and sell to the alchemists. Okay, now let's move to contemporary Ragnarok. Nobody relies on nobody else, the game is directed towards solo-play. There is still commerce, but it is mostly about selling gear that you get through cash shop. Okay, now let's consider Albion. In Albion, it is possible for one single character to craft literally anything. However, that seldom happens. Just like in real life economics, it is not because you can do it that it is advantegeous to do it. It is better to do something you are good at, so you are more competitive in the market for that thing, sell and use the money to buy the rest.

    With this analysis I'm not surprised the Business has left RO mostly untouched since changes to RO puts the whole Ragnarok IP at risk. The Ragnarok team would need to get approval from the parent company to invest in RO. The only way this would be approved is if they're making lots of small changes that add monetization for the business. This is the microtransactions additions we saw from the semi-recent changes. Now the RO team doesn't want to make more changes to the game, since only the bad changes get approved.

    I feel like any company that's trying to fight modders is playing the wrong game. Modders are willing to put in thousands of hours of work for free just because they want to make your product better. It's literally not possible to compete with that. Even if your own staff has comparable talent and dedication, you still have to pay them. The key is just to make money off of them. Sell the Ragnarok Client for like $50, and if you buy the client, you can play on any server you want. Heck, maybe we even give out some server hosting tools. Most people would probably pay, certainly at least far more than are paying now. Of course, many modern games operate using exactly this model, and unsurprisingly they generally tend to be pretty successful.

Not only would Gravity make more money, they would make their intellectual property stronger, and thus make more money out of their mobile cash-grabbers!
