I saw Duffy with Basie playing this Tama kit at the Minkler Auditorium (Seneca College) as part of a series of Classic Big Band concerts they would do yearly. At the time I had not heard of Duffy . I was mesmerized by his playing , could not take my eyes off him. A superb player, his enthusiasm, joy for life and outstanding chops are well in evidence here.

I saw the Basie band in January 1980 in Austin at the Armadillo World Headquarters. I was in the Air Force and had been battling a flu. But I couldn’t miss seeing Basie. Tickets were $7 and I sat on the floor in front of the stage. Duffy was the star that night. He had a great groove and was full of energy. I swear after the show I felt better immediately.

I was at the outdoor concert in the park near 12th and Vine either the day before or after, I can't remember which. It was great watching Basie being called out by old-timers from the neighborhood. He remembered many of them. It was very touching, as the public was grooving. Truly one of the best concerts I every attended. Duffy, did you play that day in the park?

Sometime back in the late 80's (not exactly sure what year) I went to a big jazz festival in Jacksonville, Florida... Great bands playing all day long. As the evening approached I was getting tired and was contemplating leaving. Then the Count Basie alumni band came on and WOW... I didn't know who the drummer was but he absolutely LITE the place up. 30,000 people immediately stood up and starting dancing, clapping and swinging... From the first note, the energy level went through the roof. I never experienced such drive from a band but it was the drummer. He was on FIRE... He had those 2 cymbals way up high and he would come out his seat and hit those things setting up the band at the perfect time. His time feel and tasty dynamics were truly stunning as he commanded the band through the arrangements... You could see his joy and love of the music from way out in the crowd. I was there all day and the only band I remember was Count Basie and it was all because of Duffy Jackson. That guy changed my perception of what it really means to be a world class musician, drummer and entertainer...

When I was the band director at Nautilus Jr High on Miami Beach, I had a drum student by the name of Duffy Jackson. He was the most talented drummer I've ever had the pleasure to have as a student. He was a student that became not only an amazing drummer and Musician, but I am also so honored to have known Duffy who is someone that will be a part of my life forever!

This is awesome. I played drums for Don for a few years. He was a super talented guitarist and vocalist. And he was a great guy, treated me very well. I came into his band at a last minute gig when there drummer skipped out, listened to his cd on the way to the gig with the bass player. Then I ended up playing for about 3 years with him. He taught me a lot about playing live. Played a ton of gigs at the Blues Cafe in Long Beach Ca.
