Two interesting misdirections that you only see if you try some different things with the various Neutral Route paths are as follows: 1. If you choose to FIGHT after defeating Photoshop Flowey, he appears to die as his face disappears. When you RESET to play the game again, Flowey no longer shows up at all, which makes it seem like he is really dead. However, because a RESET does in fact go back in time, he is actually alive again. He's just tricking you into thinking he's dead, and he still will steal the souls at the end of the game, though he doesn't try to use them again, just like if you had chosen MERCY. 2. If you have either chosen FIGHT after the Photoshop Flowey battle or have chosen MERCY and completed a specific pattern of Neutral Routes leading to Flowey promising not to kill Asgore this time, you might think you can choose MERCY at the end of the Asgore fight and get a happy ending with him. If you chose the latter path, Flowey even outright suggests that it's possible, which is why he is willing to not kill Asgore to let you try it. However, if you try this, Asgore will conclude that his idea of living with you as a family again is just a fantasy, and he will kill himself in order to allow you to exit through the barrier. There is no way to save him in a Neutral Route.

I personally don't think salem is meant to literally be a scapegoat for the park owners, that's silly. If anything it seems like a reference to glitchtrap. Rambley and her are both animals people mentally associate with smelling bad and rambley we encounter as an AI so maybe Salem is also an AI guide in the park rather then a living mascot. But maybe not. Maybe Salem was always intended to be a villain. On a related note- NONE of the living mascots look like their cutout art. Finely doesn't have a mane or eyes, and Llyod doesn't have blonde hair highlights/a suit/or blue in his appearance(infact his real appearance more closely resembles the Retro llyod plush)

All stages lacked A LOT of scale, depth and complexity for me (and seriousness...Spore is entirely too goofy for me, even more so than other Wright-titles), and the aquatic stage is sorely missed (could've even had a horror element to it, looking down into the dark depths), but I think the only stage I'd really actually take into an entirely different direction is the space stage. The whole vibe of the game is that as your species grows, you have to look at an increasingly bigger and bigger picture - the individual becomes less and less important, which is only logical. You're not just controlling yourself and your pack anymore, but billions of your people. But then, in the final stage that is so gigantic in scope, you shrink the gameplay down to controlling a single ship again? Why? What's the point? Sure, you can recruit a small "pack" of other ships to support you like in the creature stage, but being degraded to such a limited role like that just feels disappointing. It feels like you're just an errand boy for the Empire that you yourself built - seriously disheartening, at least to me. What I'd envision is more akin to games like Sins Of A Solar Empire or Stellaris, a highly complex grand strategy game of galactic, maybe later on even intergalactic scope and almost terrifying depth. Creating and commanding fleets, handling colonies, dealing with warfare, politics and interstellar economics. You know...actual Galactic Empire stuff. Oh well. Pondering what could've been just makes me sad. What I DID really like though was that as soon as you reach the creature stage, your entire present star system is mapped pretty much in real time - meaning that not only does the day-night-cycle feel like the real deal and watching neighboring planets pass across the sky is a sight to behold, but also that if you leave the planet into orbit, the relative positions of the stellar bodies in the system match those you just saw from down on the ground. I quite enjoyed that, makes everything feel much more like a coherent experience.

Yeah, I also think Ralsei will be either the final boss or pre-final if we get to Gaster. I can imagine that in the Snowgrave version, we'll eventually just break into Ralsei's world to close his fountain. And he'll naturally fight us... along with all the darkners we recruited for him. Ralsei isn't really what we see him as. He's just dedicated himself to playing this specific role for us in this "prophecy". And he doesn't seem like "final boss" material to me. He's too superficial. Too naive and clearly being manipulated by the "prophecy". But I think a confrontation with him is inevitable if we want to disrupt the "status quo" he represents and get to the manipulator behind him.

The "0HP but carries on the fight" mislead has actually appeared before, there's a boss fight in Final Fantasy V (1992) where one of the protagonists, alone in battle, will take a ton of overkill damage, end up at 0HP, but still refuses to lay down and dish out all he has against the boss and defeat him.

If you "lower" his HP until he gets out of your way then the mad dummy will be mad about you attacking him, if you use ACT, the they will be mad about making him cry. I'm pretty sure the dummy part at the beginning is so you don't think twice about the random dummy here, and might even atack it for lols, not realieing it's processed. I believe the reason Ralsei is okay with Castletown's fountain staying open is because it's made of Pure Darkness, implying the ones opened by the Knight are not. So it's only natural he'd want to close the "artificial" fountains, or at least the ones created with ill intent, while keeping what seems to be the original one. (Aside from it being the only Dark World where foreign darkners can live.)

When kris moves like a zombie after ripping their soul out, i definitely dont think its "being possessed". I think it is kris, but ripping your SOUL out and not having it in you most definitely hurts and makes it really hard to move. I mean the damage sound literally plays when they rip it out. Kris didnt really endanger toriel either, just slashed her tires and in a place where they wouldnt really hurt toriel if she drove. Night 1, the pie is eaten and the TV is plugged in. Without a pie, Toriel is forced to bake another one the next evening which is both what prompts Susie to come inside the Dreemurr home, and acts as the diversion for Kris to go wash their hands. The TV is pretty self-explanatory. The dialogue "It's not yet time to wash your hands." also appears at the start of Chapter 2, which implies the plan to slash Toriel's tires to keep Susie over was already in motion the morning prior. I mean come on. Why would a demon possessing you make you eat a fuckin PIE, kris just wanted it and didnt want the player to stop them along with the rest of their plans

I've been wanting to make a video for a long time about all the various brick jokes in Undertale (i.e. setups with extremely delayed payoffs, whether they're meant to be comedic or serious) and this video is very similar in its execution! I think you neglected to mention what is arguably one of the biggest twists in the game, at least for me: that Asgore and King Dreemurr are the same person. I think a lot of people forget this is a twist since it's become so ingrained in the identity of the game, but consider that Toriel makes only a passing reference to Asgore, saying "They, Asgore, will kill you." Through this, you're led to believe that "Asgore" is some kind of extremely violent killer monster, who you should avoid at all costs. Later, Papyrus makes reference to a "King of all Monsters," also known as "King Dreemurr" saying "He's a big fuzzy pushover! Everyone loves that guy!" Through this, you come to believe the King won't pose any threat, and will probably be an ally later in the game. It's only during your first real conversation with Undyne that the truth is revealed. "Our king... King ASGORE Dreemurr... will take your soul." Now our expectations are completely subverted. How can the relentless killer Toriel mentioned, and the lovable goof that Papyrus mentioned, possibly be the same person? The way the game answers this question is honestly some of the best writing in any video game ever.

The whole "The Spore we got was butchered" narrative that some people have has always confused me, for some reason they treat the 2005 demo like its Spore in its purest unfiltered form and that the final game we got was sabotaged by the Cute camp of devs, but when you actually ask them what they miss about the 2005 demo all they can muster up is the Aquatic Stage and blood. The Aquatic stage sounds really cool on paper, but when you actually think about it it would have boiled down to being the Creature stage but underwater, which would have just made the gameplay more repetitive. And I really dont see how someone's love for this game can actually ride or die on whether or not it has blood, when theres already plenty of games on the market that does have it. If anyone reading this felt disappointed with the final version of Spore for similar reasons, could you explain why?

I'm pretty sure asriel's death wasn't because his soul was in conflict. The Monsters weren't wrong, he just didn't fight back with his new supreme powers. they didn't know why, but asriel reveals it to us. he says that because he fought against chara's (or whatever name you give them) control of his body and the urges from them to attack, he ended up becoming flowey. which if you do the math suggests that he stopped them from fighting the other humans and retreated back home as the humans slowly did more and more damage, before he collapsed dead on the garden, spreading his dust and the golden flower seeds, which would eventually become flowey.

Toby Fox didn't just develop this style of constant misdirection on his own. I believe that his involvement with the webcomic Homestuck by Andrew Hussie shaped his sense of humor/storytelling to a significant degree. It's a story well known for it's constant plot twists/misdirections deliberately designed react to and often troll the fandom. I say "fandom" specifically because the webcomic was VERY reactive to it's community over it's 7 year run (2009-2016). I think Toby emulated this by trying his best to predict the reactions of the community and more specifically the player by drawing parallels between the player and Flowey. I think Andrew Cunningham's video "What was so good about UNDERTALE anyway? (A mildly dreanged retrospective)" explains it pretty well. All that said, While Toby's and Hussie's styles are similar in some ways, I personally think Toby learned a lot from Hussie's mistakes, and ultimately made the better story. Homestuck was obnoxiously long and winding, some of the story decisions could have used more thought, "This joke is going on too long and that's the joke!" still means the joke is going on too long, and being too obsessed with punking your readers 24/7 can result in ignoring reasonable story telling decisions for a cheap rug pull. I believe that Toby watched all of this go down repeatedly over the course of 7 years, maybe had some similar thoughts to mine, and said "hold my dog bowl and watch this." Speaking of Hussie's mistakes, I also think watching Hussie might be the reason Toby avoids the public eye for the most part. Hussie kinda had a weird time with his internet fame, mostly caused by his inability to shut up + his sense of humor mostly originating from old school forum culture + large swaths of the fandom putting him on an obnoxiously high pedestal... like, more of a pedestal than the UT/DR fandom puts Toby on. I think Toby watched all *that* happen too and said "yeah, maybe give my dog bowl back" resulting in Toby's minimal fandom interaction.
