I built a tiny cabin in my backyard. But I'm not just PRETENDING to live off-the-grid in a funky little A-frame, I'm PRACTICING for the day I can do it in real life… Or PREPPING for when I NEED to.
If you enjoy building things using both your brain and your hands … OR if tiny homes, cozy spaces, homsteading, and the idea of a simpler, low-tech way of life doesn't sound all that bad - maybe even kinda fun … AND maybe you occasionally reflect on how those things add elements of truth and meaning to your life. Well then, you’re in the right place.

One hell of an awsome human being!! His life was what he made it. He lived life by his standards and loved every moment. May he rest in peace.
I've seen the fascinating series on public television. But I've been left wondering - what k8nd of person isolates himself for decades? I mean, in one way I get it. And in another way, I don't. But good for him for enduring. I think I recall that when he left Alaska, he went to live with his brother? So was his brother supporting him entirely? I assume he had no pension, no ss. I wonder how his brother felt about that?
I believe he was a Navy veteran. So he probably would have had a military pension (more than enough to support his self-sufficient lifestyle).
Aaaahh. That makes sense.
I found what I was looking for all my life when I first saw Dick's videos on the net, I have found my own solatuide in the world from his documentaries,😁
I saw the original version of Dick's life in Alaska many yrs ago. This version with music in the video interfered while Dicks was talking. Dick was an amazing builder and he showed, u can be living alone & need no one for a companion.
Yes. Some people like the updates, and some don’t. I’m just happy that this new version is introducing DP to a new crop of viewers.
He didn't have a woman telling him how he was doing it wrong! True peace!
Hell,I shed a tear for the old man, thank ya dick
Makes my heart happy
The G.o.a.t,the life I have always strive for,63 now, little late, but sure enjoy his videos
I prefer the original
24:30 traditional old time American folk tune called "last chance blues" in case anyone was interested. Picked pretty good too.
Thank you for sharing this. 👊🏼
You’re welcome! 👊
It takes a very special breed of human to live like this a thrive like Mr Proenneki did. What a role model
An inspiration to us ALL. Free man of the land, that he Loved.
Were did he learn this craft
This guy Dick is truly inspiring, a man of many trades and unique qualities. Dick is still in the area doing what he loves.
Such a beautiful and well-lived life
Thank you folks. Love you Dick P.
I often wonder why more of his film hasn't found its way to the internet. I'm sure we haven't seen all of it. What an interesting cat.
blood pressure drops 20% by watching this, guaranteed
Mission accomplished.
Don't know if I'd love it or hate it, but super glad he was happy there. Astounding story and life he had.
Agreed.
I was watching dick proeneke before all of y'all.
This doesn’t need music. At all.
I can’t tell if that’s a criticism or a compliment… either way I think I agree.
That he lived there and make those movies makes my life better to see it. Thank you
You’re welcome. Glad you enjoyed it.
At 23:00, you can hear a wolf in the background.
Creating content before it was cool
… way before.
Sam Elliott sounds drunk as hell narrating this
“If you can’t laugh at yourself, you’re in for a rough ride” is exactly true!
Thanks for presenting this; never get tired of Dicks story! 🫡
3:50 anybody else see the shape of a face in the mountain right at this moment. Dead center of the screen😢 3:50 🎉🎉 at 3 minutes 50 seconds in
Does it look like the profile of a guy smashing his nose into something? If not, then I’m not seeing what you’re seeing.
Came for dick proenneke, subscribed after VDH👍🇺🇸
WOW!! Fresh footage of Dick’s life & legacy left for all of us mortals to see!! I have been following this man’s journey decades after his start. You see, Dick started this wild trip at or near the age of FIFTY years of age. When I fully retired, at the age of 50 1/2, there was NO WAY I could have done the things he did & he did them well!! I LOVE this new footage I just happen to stumble upon!! Well, I hate to go but my fresh cup of coffee ☕️ awaits. OH!! BTW!! On June 3rd, 2024 I will be turning 72 years old…….that is IF my wifey lets me!! LOL!! See ya all in ‘the funny papers’!! he he he he
Happy Birthday! Glad you enjoyed it.
He had a long life.
I am going to attempt to make this! Love your style and how you are just a normal dude making this. Thanks for the amazing video and I’ll let you know on how it turns out!
👍 Glad you enjoyed it.
I think I watched the original film several yrs back. Definitely an interesting film by an interesting man.
This man survived a plane crash in the middle of nowhere. What a legend
Is that how he ended up in Alaska?
The name for the narrator on the credits is Texas Sam but that's Sam Elliott's voice. Didn't realize he went under that moniker. This was a well done short version of Dick Proennekes life there in the wilderness.
incredible man and life . i really enjoyed this
Dick Proenneke over here! Well done myan, keep it rollin.
All that beauty and Dick ended up in all places Hemet Ca.
MET A GIANT PORCUPINE TODAY, HE AMBLED ACCROSS THE ROAD AND DIDNT STOP LONG TO LISTEN TO MY HELLOS
like so many, i watched this on pbs when i was in middle school & it changed all our lives forever the world is far greater than we know until we see it for ourselves ... well done sir & rip there in the quiet of the wilderness<3
People like him will inherent the earth atrue inviromentalist, not a blow hard california activist.
as a full-blown introvert myself, I envy Dick's skill set more than I can describe! to be able to live the way he lived is the epitome of what living is all about!
He talked and showed slides at our Harmony middle school when I was young, guessing 1967. He was born and raised near Primrose, Iowa. Primrose has always been a very small Iowa town and seven miles east of my hometown, Farmington IA. I knew some of his relatives. He was a brilliant wood worker but people don’t know that.
Thanks for sharing that personal memory from middle school. Very cool!
Hey Big Guy; Thanks for the video. Ever since I seen the PBS special about Dick Proenneke, I've enjoyed his books and all video's and dvd's.
You’re welcome.
Just a bloke here from the UK. Ive read most of whats abailable on Dick Proenneke over the years and watched every documentary and video out there. Seems that Dick was about as close of a doppelganger ill ever have, his thoughts, ideals and morals align in such a way that i felt I'd found a long lost brother! If there is anyone out there who has any of his original sourdough starter i'd be interested in sourcing some. I tracked some down about 15 years ago and got it back to the UK. I believe it was from Babe Alsworth's wife who originally gave some to Dick to take to his cabin. I lost my starter when i relocated home years back. I found Dick's documentaries back when i was looking at where we (The human race) had derailed and made such a mess of our planet, back then I was ready to turn my back on it all and go find somewhere away from the mess and find my own solitude. Its a small world, it really is...
I recently bought some sourdough starter from the Richard Proenneke Museum in Donnellson, Iowa. Not sure if the ship to the UK, but I'd bet you can call to make special arrangements: richardproennekestore.com/sourdough
no....this is not better than the original....
Yes. It's not everyone's cup of tea. Some like it and some don't.
That was a great film thanks
You're welcome!
I think in the end we all Need each other 👍
The real deal I live that show
