When giving examples on differences in color don't refer to people as green or purple. It makes your point trite.

Goddamn. Microagressions aside, this all just makes me sick to realize corporate work has little to do with actually working. From interviewing to day-to-day functions to climbing the ladder, everything comes down to a vibe. I’m surprised airplanes aren’t just falling out of the sky everyday. One thing that’s always been tough as a black man in corporate is finding other black men that I could relate to. At my last position, black men were either at the bottom of the hierarchy as janitors or at the top as partners. I can handle the pressure, but I still have a hard time grappling with the idea that corporate work has largely been exclusionary and that I’m the exception.

Thanks for putting yourself out there and sharing all the specifics (e.g. the outrageously vague PIP), it adds a lot of credibility. Lots of folks talk about their career experience on YT but it's hard to judge someone's real experiences in a short timespan. I guess it's just like you said - everytime you meet someone new you have to prove yourself!

Thank you for sharing this story, but you think your experience is bad? Try being a big black Wonsan who makes a good salary. My attacks start right away as soon as I’m hired! It’s been a nightmare! I don’t work in corporate America but it’s worse. I’m glad Google treats you nice. I had to quit many jobs due to harassment and discrimination coming from a many on a job at the HR level, administrative level co worker level. I have felt like giving up so many times! I know how it feels as a Blk male because my cousin use to work HP in Silicon Valley. If you want to hear more , write me back. Maybe there’s something for me to do at Google too. I am tired!

The pizza situation is hilarious. I had to talk to one of my coworkers the other day bc they asked me to send an email for them. They sent me a text saying they sent me an email. The email had the people to send the email to and exactly what to say in it. Instantly pissed! You could have sent the email yourself with all that time you spent texting and emailing me.

Being a black person in corporate America is so exhausting 😔 why can’t we just do the work & go home without all the extras? If I don’t want to mingle & be extra friendly or hang out after work & get to know people more what does that have to do with my ability to do my job? Long as im respectful & cordial it should just be that. These companies always preach so much about “diversity” well that should include those who are introverts or more direct. They make us do all these bs personality quizzes to only want us all to act the same. And the passive aggressive whi*e women are the worse always finding something to complain about that has nothing to do with the actual job/work

My manager will ask me random questions of where I was going on my extended PTO. Never tell your manager what you are doing. I think I had her scared that I was leaving. No ma'am I want to get out of here to stay sane lol sounds like you were on PIP and didn't know it 😮 Edit: as soon as you said it lol yup 😢

  • @lynnlondon8885

That PIP is like it’s written for a clueless child. You are a whole college educated degreed up black man, and it mitigates all of that to tell you to “Ask questions when tasks or expectations are unclear” Assuming as if you have some question you are purposefully withholding and “slow down and read e-mail’s thoroughly” is insulting! PIPs written like that are even more deplorable and slap in face for roles that aren’t even rocket science, yet that idiotic corporate managers go through great lengths to make the employee sound like they are so incompetent despite their education!! Ridiculous and insulting. I had one written up extremely similarly and in the same field as you, so this seems to be a common trend unfortunately.

Biden said at the Morehouse commencement 🎓 the black for to work twice as hard to be thought just to be equal. These are things our parents and grandparents said. This is OLD, but here we are. There are blacks that deny this because they don't want to be a threat and want to get along. This is dangerous for our health.

I've been working Seoul for a big company that employs people from most of the big western countries. From my experience, the locals who have lived abroad are more likely to express negative opinions of black or mixed people. And the is more so in company settings. Generally, my American colleagues are more easygoing than the Brits and Europeans. Overall, we have to have thick skin and keep our minds on the money.

I had a similar experience at my tech job of 7 years...moral of the story share enough that not too many questions are asked/a narrative can't be created about you but also don't really say how you feel about things. Often times the person that's "circling back and checking in on you" will be the first to tell others and create said narrative. I'd also recommend checking out the author Robert Green; he has several great books on understanding how people communicate and perceive/exert power. Thanks for sharing your experience and your story.

6:26 OMG, they ALL say this. They can't prove anything that you've done wrong, so they fall back on this stupid lie. They tried that on me at a different accounting firm, but I was outperforming everybody and so many partners relied on me for their hardest clients. Those liars couldn't get their little agenda to work.

Hey, I appreciate everything you said. If I had someone sit me down 20 years ago and told me how to carry myself in some of these spaces, then I would have played the corporate game better. Life is a journey and our experiences are what helps others, right! I totally agree, you have to keep your personal business, personal. Even if some colleague seems like family, they are not. It's unfortunate, but you have to keep things to yourself. I also think an environment is vital to your professional growth. If you stay in a toxic environment, even if the pay is good, it is sole sucking and can leave you feeling jaded and complacent. So, get out as soon as you can. I am glad you are with a better employer and you are in an environment where you can thrive and be yourself. All the best!

Listen…CA just be doing too much. First none of them are your friends, I’m not saying there are great people in the workplace…but it’s just too much to blur these lines. Secondly, I never asked for time off I told them when I’m taking off…I also never subscribed to earned time off or waiting for time accrued to take time off… that’s how they try to control you and your time. The worst that could happen is that I wouldn’t get paid for the days that aren’t PTO if I ran out . There needs to be balance. And thirdly, I believe that no supervisor, manager, director is the “boss” of me. At the end of the day managers manage the work, not me. If I’m hired to do a job there’s an expectation that I will do that job, and if I do…that should be it. Society has brainwashed us to think these companies can control you… with terms like “ boss” or phrases like “ my boss won’t let me take vacation” …ridiculous. We are grown. We need to remember that there is an exchange for labor that is occurring…if anything we get the cheaper end of the deal no matter what the pay is because time is more valuable than money…but there is an exchange happening. We’re not at work to be babysat ie micromanaged, controlled, undermined and disrespected considering you’re a relatively good employee…that should be enough and honored. This is why I’ll never go back. Corey - that lady was trying to control you and she had it confused. What you do outside of work is your business. She’s a hater, and was on a power trip because you were respectfully doing you. When they feel they can’t control you, they pull things out of the air and yes they put you on a PIP. And nothing they request of you, they do themselves. I definitely have been put on PIPs before. They will always throw rocks and hide their hands. I hate the fact that we can’t give managers performance evaluations. Everyone is not fit for leadership. That’s why companies end up losing really great employees due to faulty leadership. As a black woman they always tried to break me and try me, so I understand you 100 percent. God had other plans! Congratulations on your new role! Keep striving and thriving! New sub here !

This just triggered the fuck outta me as a black gay man. I had my first professional experience where I went through some of the stuff you mentioned in this video and I’m still healing from it. The fact that employers and bosses want to control your personality and temperament is crazy to me. I think as black men if we not hucking and jiving then they’re not comfortable. The part I hate the most is when my words get misconstrued in a way that makes me look bad.
