    When I was a child in the 60’s, my family slept on mended sheets inherited from my great great grandmother. She had been born during the American civil war and never threw anything away. Those were rough old sheets that wore like iron. I still have her floor length grey and white ticking kitchen apron.

    I’ve always patched and repaired our clothing. Jeans always seem to wear out first at the crotch. I patch them using thread that matches the color of faded jeans and you can barely see it.

    I find interesting how 1940s utility fashion could be used today and help the environment. Less waste make do and mend, Victory gardens. It’s a beautiful and practical vintage fashion look.❤

    I love this history. I would be interested in the war-time pamphlets that give instructions on how to increase clothing sizes with added panels of fabric.

    Some of the repair stitches reminds me of older clothing that my mom had repaired when she was a young teacher during WWII. I may have one or two pieces left. And I was a member of the Old Salem Costume Committie when I worked fro them as a Salem Interpreter many years ago. It was a lot of fun and I loved it.

    I'm here because I just watched The Dig and absolutely fell in love with the clothes (Mrs. Pretty's much more than Peggy Piggott's, although that could simply be about my age - 40s - and no longer liking the younger styles as much). I LOVED that long linen jacket she wears in so many scenes, and would love to find a version for myself. Also that first outfit we see her in with the pants you compare to jodhpurs - are those tucked into socks or cropped? I can't tell and, again, would love to find an iteration for myself. Also love all the knits, cardis etc. and in my googling discovered that quite a few of the blouses were sourced from Margaret Howell, which is a current brand and. yes, has a lot of boxy cut tops. And the straw hat! I'd kill for one and you named it ('cloche') so now i have something to google for - thank you!

    Found this 2 years later ,my Mum born in 1926 in a smaller city still had to share a wedding dress in 1951 her sister wore it the year before and there simply was enough money or fabric but all pictures of both sisters show such style throughout the war .

    The coupons the british ladies sent to then Princess Elizabeth were also sent back for another reason. The monarchy does not accept gifts. A practice that still applies today. Hence why the coupons were mailed back.

    I think you're having troubles understanding symbolic representation and that's coloring your view on the topic. The eye patch is a reference to the Egyptian God Seth and his struggle with Horus (A good vs evil story). An eye patch symbolically represents willful blindness which is an important element that separates the villain from a hero. It's a metaphor. I'd suggest taking a class on semiotics or reading a book on symbolism or a book on character design.

  • @SewBiased
    @SewBiased6 ай бұрын

    I think you haven't lived with the discrimination of a disability and that takes priority over symbolism.

  • @jeremiahnoar7504
    @jeremiahnoar75046 ай бұрын

    @@SewBiased I like pointing out discrimination whenever I see it as most of my family ranges from neuro divergent to severely disabled. But our brains have recognized certain symbols since the beginning of story telling. Since that's unchangeable, isn't it better to realize that there are plenty of hero's too who are disabled as well? Luke Skywalker is an amputee for example (there's actually a ton of hero's that are disabled in someway). Why focus on just the villains?

    I noticed the James Bond villains have scars thing too. It feels already forced sometimes. Like the Chiffre. In the novel, the Chiffre doesn't have any scars at all, but of course, in the "recent" movie, he just had to get a scar, cuz he is a James Bond villain.

    I don't think the point of making Freddy Krueger look the way he looks is not to portray disabled people in a bad way, but to make him look disgusting and creepy.

    Late to the party, but In terms of facial disfigurements, I'm surprised nobody mentioned Zuko from Avatar: the Last Airbender. He is a major antagonist at first, bur joins the heroes later on, playing an instrumental role in ending the war. Also, his scar was given to him by his father, the Fire Lord and the epitome of evil, who has nary a mark on his skin. Zuko also recieved the scar as punishment for a good action, speaking up for the lives of soldiers that were being sent out simply to be killed by enemy forces. Also his evil sister has flawless skin and prides herself on her appearance.

    I really love your reasoning for uploading this, I wish you uploaded more projects like this! But I understand, it's difficult to keep doing something like make videos when you don't have much energy or motivation. Lately my depression has been kicking me in the gut, so I find it really hard to be motivated and productive but it makes me feel even worse when I just sit around doing nothing, I feel useless, so smaller or big simple projects are truly a life saver. I hope your doing well, and I hope you can upload again soon.
