    I could use some advice. I just bought a FX-200iN for a good deal. Should just be a "legal for trade" version with a higher capacity than the 120i. However I cannot select GN, it's just not listed. Any advice? Is there a menu I can't find to enable GN so it's selectable?

    Thank you for this lifesaving tip. I thought my 3 year old FX-120i had malfunctioned after I upgraded from Autotrickler v3 to v4. It worked once after setting up and then after I changed powders and power cycled it, it wouldn't display grains, nor pair via bluetooth to the app. After your fix, everything works perfect. Thank you again!

    Thanks so much for taking a data/evidence based approach towards barrel harmonics.. Much needed. I have a question: What is your view on relationship between a thicker vs thinner barrel profile? From your video's I am guessing that, all other things being equal, having a lighter profile barrell probably does not adversely impact precision by a significant measure? ...what do you think?

  • @Ammolytics
    @Ammolytics Жыл бұрын

    Hi there, thanks for the kind words! When I had the high speed camera, I recorded some light and heavy profile barrels to explore the differences and what the effects on precision might be. First, here are a few things that I know to be true: 1. Everything else being equal, a heavier profile barrel increases weight and therefore the effects of recoil. 2. In every video I recorded for every firearm, we saw the gun start to move from recoil before the bullet exited the barrel. 3. Lightweight barrels, like those on hunting rifles, appear to lose precision more quickly when more rounds are fired. (Going from memory: We reasonably rapid fired a hunting rifle and after the 4th or 5th shot or so, we were way off target at 200yd) Taking 1 and 2 together, it seems reasonable that a heavier profile barrel may help to keep the firearm on target before the bullet leaves the muzzle, thereby affecting the shooter's ability to maintain tight groups. Hope to cover this in a future video. Thanks for the thoughtful question!

    @@Ammolytics This is such great insight. I think on 3 there will be general concensus and something that is expected. However number 2 is super interesting insight. Is there a particular lenght of barrel where this bullet exits even before significant movement? I am trying to understand if there is an optimal barrel length where the diff in barrel profiles is not 'significant' and one should rather carry a lighter rifle. Thanks for your inputs and such great work...keep going, this is the type of data revolution that this field needs the most.

    Try mounting at the center of mass, not the "balance point". Try balancing the rifle so the center of mass is at the cartridge base, in line with the bore axis. You might just be surprised at the results.

  • @Ammolytics
    @Ammolytics Жыл бұрын

    Good idea! That should help to mitigate any rocking motion since the rifle won't be mounted by a natural pivot point. Thanks!

  • @patrickthompson389
    @patrickthompson389 Жыл бұрын

    @@Ammolytics Just be sure to balance the rifle with weights not just fore and aft, but also top and bottom. Lots of shooters balance the rifle along only one axis, and then wonder why the rifle still kicks and bucks up, or why it rolls over in a bipod with loose cant. Balance around the center of the bolt face when closed and loaded, in 3-axis.

  • @coolgeekish
    @coolgeekish Жыл бұрын

    @@patrickthompson389 Helpful feedback though I have some concerns that adding too many weights may inadvertently bias the performance of the rifle in ways that cannot be replicated when firing without the rig. The goal isn't to eliminate recoil.

  • @patrickthompson389
    @patrickthompson389 Жыл бұрын

    @@coolgeekish I never mentioned adding weights.... You should balance with scope, rings, barrel profile, sometimes weights in specific spots, as part of your system configuration. Example; you wouldn't put an MTU Barrel & ZCO 5-25 on a carbon hunting rig, because its both unpractical and completely top & front heavy. But, if it's a PRS rig, you'd balance this with weight in your stock. But most shooters don't look at where these weights actually go, in reference to the bore axis, and the preferred center of mass placement. You need to consider the thrust & recoil direction, and how and where it affects the CG & CoM of the rifle. If the barrel pushes straight back, but the center of mass is below the bore axis, the barrel will flip up, predictably. If the stock is too high, it will push down. If you have a massive scope on top in a heavy mount, it will rotate around that mass and push your stock up. But if balanced on three axis, it will recoil in line with the bore axis, and subsequently provide a stable muzzle that does not affect the trajectory held.

    Making small groups with this fixture should be easy, in theory. But as you may know reality is often different and more complex that what we can think or see. Even in benchrest shooting, small things like trigger, recoil, muzzle jump, rifle balance or harmonics have an effect on the group size. I will watch your next videos to see if it works as expected. Years ago I have built such device, it was slightly different because the gun was held by the barrel (stock removed) and the trigger was pulled by a servo motor but the aim was the same.

    Thanks for the vid. I do like what you're doing & ,I understand where you're going with this however, the problem is, this doesn't do a whole lot if we're aren't benchrest shooters.. I mean, I know what you're saying &, I've thought of this kinda thing myself but, unless I can duplicate this settup all the time, it's not kinda going to help me/us. Not only that but, about the best group you're going to get with a semi auto is 1/2" at best. It's the nature of the beast &, it's nothing to be ashamed of.

  • @jcims
    @jcims3 жыл бұрын

    Eh, benchrest shooters buy a benchrest, which basically have only one purpose. The nice thing about this is that the extruded aluminum frame is super modular and you can hang all sorts of stuff off of it if you so choose. Want a longer one? Don't cut the truss as short. Want to measure muzzle brake performance? Put a force sensor on it. Want to use it for crossbows or pellet rifles, order a clamp from 80/20. Want to standardize your chronograph results, build a cantilever mount that hangs off the front. Want to make it super portable, swap the screwed in gussets with hand clamps and the whole thing would fit in a shoe box. I feel like we'll see this in future experimentation.

    I probably spent more time explaining the *what* in this video and not the *why*. Thanks for raising this and making the opportunity for me to try to answer that! I'm not suggesting using this for normal shooting. It wouldn't be permitted in competition anyway. Here are some use cases that I think this would be good for: - Increasing confidence of a precise zero on a rifle - Debugging precision issues - Load development - Component testing (muzzle brakes, triggers, etc) - Benchmarking rifle/ammo precision The last one is key. Too many folks go out and buy more stuff, but it's important to know the capabilities of your rifle/ammo so that you know if it needs to improve, or if the operator does. That's why it's designed to let you just attach a rifle as-is, instead of removing the action and possibly missing something that could be affecting precision. Lastly, I'm working on measuring barrel harmonics. For those experiments, I need to remove all unnecessary vibration to keep noise out of the datasets. Hope this helps & thanks for watching!
