Is a hog an improper construction technique or an intended way to give rise to the brick laying? When they get to the top they’ll have to slice some bricks to make the top level!?😅

I grew up in a house built in 1885 and it was wonderful and plumb. In my 20s I was young and dumb so I bought my own house of similar vintage to renovate. Well when I tore off the old rotted lime plaster I found out the other side of 19th century building, the cheap rubbish they built walls with, the walls built on dirt with no foudations, unsupported wooden beams that sagged. Never again, not all old houses are vintage, some are better off demolished. I did find a sealed late 19th century beer bottle behind the plaster which is a souvenir of my folly.

It's just an example of a mistake that can happen in masonry. They were working in a tough spot, bumping their heads on the attic floor with poor lighting. Laying 15k brick without a level on an intricate project will lead to mistakes here and there. It's not a problem, though. They had it sorted back out just above the attic floor.

Anyone ever explain how or why it’s called a “hog”? I think in theory class in high school they told us it was because a guy was “hogging” all of the mortar by laying his bed joints too big thus using more mud than everyone else. I’ve never seen it out in the field in 23 years though.

I look forward to all of your videos. I really appreciate the way you take pride in your work and do things correctly without cutting corners. As I mentioned before, I've been a mason for 30 years and have built countless fireplaces, it honestly makes my day to see a fellow mason that holds true to the craft and does things right. It's sad how so many others in this trade hack!! It has always been important to me to do things correctly and up to code, props to you for doing the same Chad

I've been a union bricklayer for 25 years, been divorced three times, laid bricks on 4 continents. And I can tell you with authority this is not what masons means by a hog in the wall. So there's an architectural feature called a glory hole. And when you say there's a hot in the wall, it's when there's a hog in the hole, if you know what I mean.

I've seen it happen firsthand with one guy using a modular rule and the other guy using a standard spacing rule. Communication is key. When you tell the new guy to go build a lead on sixes, make sure you're using the same rule. 😂
