It may help individual readers understand the New Testament but in terms of scholarship it won't have a major effect.

Delightful video! A very fine argument is made that these are not just pretty & blingy blobs (which they are) but can actually tell us something worthwhile about the culture that produced them. All this in a mere five minutes of presentation. Well done!!

In terms of its 19th-century and later legacy, take a look in depth at Christian Science. And when doing so, you will find it equally impossible not to reflect on the allegory of the Cave.

Curious as to how the translation of ὁ δὲ ἀνεξέταστος βίος οὐ βιωτὸς ἀνθρώπῳ became the loose cliche that it has in the English-speaking world.
@alecshackleton38157 жыл бұрын
I would have thought it would be due to how people think about their lives when they hear this and their wanting to share it with others to make them think the same way of how they should stop for a second and think (and so on and so on).
@tolar97 жыл бұрын
+Alec, thanks for that. My focus was on the formal/informal translation question regarding how the more literal "the non-examined life is no life of a (hu)man" became "the unexamined life is not worth living" cliche we're all familiar with.
@alecshackleton38157 жыл бұрын
It could be due to how it has been translated from Greek, t another language, then English as this tends to lead to minor discrepancies such as the bible. The bible has slightly different meanings as you go through the different translations and i believe this happened with this common saying

+Alec, thank you, but you're still not understanding my question. I am familiar with the process of translation; my question has to do with the transmission of this particular translation in English literary history. The phrase "the unexamined life is not worth living" has become a traditional aphorism in the English-speaking world. This English phrase is more of an informal than formal translation. What I am wondering is how this particular translation/phrase entered the communal English-speaking memory. Biblical translations that have entered English have done so primarily through the Authorised Version (the KJV), that being their transmission path into our collective literary tradition. So, with regards to this standard translation of Socrates (or, actually, Plato, I presume), who came up with it first so that it became the standard reading, even though it is a very informal translation?
