The fact I love dubbed anime seems to invalidate my opinion.

I'm a sonic fan too...

Sonic Frontiers is...

I never understood why people started saying that these non-human characters are "black," because it never makes sense. Sure, they may be certain things about their character that can vaguely relate to black culture, but it usually doesn't stem from black culture, nor is it supposed to be strictly black. Plus, as you basically said, "black coding" is rather racist. Why can't they just be their own thing? It also seems weird to me that they would get so offended seeing someone who's "not black" have something that is allegedly "black," yet they want these obviously non-black characters to be black? It seems almost hypocritical to me.

Look, this is my opinion. This kind of stuff, exposing people for who they sleep with, this doesn't need to be broadcast online for the world to see. What they did in the privacy of the bedroom is THEIR BUSINESS. Whatever happens going forward between Ryan and his wife/ex-wife, that's between them. Lizzy is just doing whatever she can to stir up drama and get clout. In the words of a wise man from long ago....... IT'S TIME TO STOP.

The concept of an anthropomorphic animal being a human race is weird. I don't like the coding argument in general because it comes off weird. All of that said, I couldn't care less if Knuckles is black or not. His design was inspired by I believe Jamaican culture? But I might be misremembering.

The concept of coding is so silly. It just comes down to either stereotypes or someone projecting their own desire to share a trait with a character they like on them. Knuckles can't just be part of his own species who's culture might have been influenced by a multitude of people IRL. He HAS to fit into some made up concept of a something in our world, because some people can't wrap their head around the concept of fiction. I grew up with the sonic series in all it's forms, and never once have I thought that Knuckles was anything but Knuckles, even when the Mayan inspired background was introduced.

@@clockhandedHe and the rest of the echidnas can be his own thing, just like how klingons are in star trek are not just "space black people". Or how Kryptonians aren't just "Alien white people". Or how Irkens from Invader Zim have literally no real world correlation with anything. What I don't understand is why people will look at something, see one minute trait of it that may or may not have been inspired by some real world example, and then display how incredibly racist they are by saying "Well this fits my view of what a _____ is, so it must be that". Especially in the case of Knuckles, who has so many different character traits and alternate backgrounds to his character that he could literally be anything.

@@schorltourmaline4521because you can recognize the inspirations taken and apply knowledge of cultural stereotypes to various works? These things don't exist in a vacuum. I'm sorry, Kryptonians aren't real. They're not a real culture. They don't have real history. I especially can't how how that's supposed to be racist because, like, there's no value judgement there! There's not an explicit or implicit one! People "claiming" characters typically comes from within, because people will recognize a lot of similarities in, once again, all the taken inspirations and be able to relate to them on a deeper level because of it. I've seen the black community, say, "claim" Piccolo as a black-coded character. Is it racist for people to relate to a character on that level, especially when there's a lack of direct representation elsewhere? Are the people on the spectrum who relate to, idk, robot characters or aliens in fiction being ableist because they can recognize similarities between their own alienation and the alienation of characters in fiction? Is them removing that thin wall of purely fictional reality in order to more directly interface with the relatable and familiar aspects of a character somehow unfair or bigoted in nature? Dawg

@@thosebloodybadgers8499 "I'm sorry, Kryptonians aren't real. They're not a real culture. They don't have real history." Uhh... yeah, that's what I'm saying. These are fictional characters with their own backgrounds, culture, and history that is COMPLETELY fictional, and does exist in the vacuum of it's own fictional reality. There is no culture that matches up 1 for 1 with the Echidna species in sonic, in any of its various incarnations, which all take bits and pieces from multiple different sources of inspiration, both real and fictional, and thus they are their own thing. The idea that any character that was not specifically made to be that way, under this idea of "Coding" is either trying to seek out stereotypes they believe are attributes of a person of that race, which would be racist by the definition of the word, or is just projection from someone who wants to "Claim" a character they like, which is silly. Let's use Piccolo for example. The slug man who is part of a warrior tribe of an otherwise pacifist culture, who spends his days meditating, lives on water alone, and reproduces via mitosis. Yes, that sounds like SO MANY PEOPLE WHO EXIST IRL. Heck, if you're trying to go by stereotypes, Piccolo's attire, meditation practices, and ability to fast for days on end is more akin to Hinduism, which would make him Indian (for as nonsensical as that is). You can like and relate to a character without needing them to represent you, and if you can't that's more a statement of your own ego than anything else. And don't give me this "spectrum" crap. I'm so far off the deep end with that stuff that I can tell you that what you just said is you grasping at straws to try and have some point in the most insensitive manner possible. The idea that people on the spectrum show see themselves as "robots" or some other inhuman thing, just because they think a bit differently than other people. Kat

@@schorltourmaline4521 but you're looking only at the broadest possible strokes. Of course when you dilute these fictional identities to just what sets them apart, they'll appear to be nothing but their own self-contained creation. But that's not just what they are. In order to sell these fictional peoples, writers have to give them a sense of communal identity - a way of dressing, a way of living, a way of building, a way of eating, of speaking, of dying, of loving, of hating. It's incredibly difficult, no, practically impossible, to create that kind of detail purely from scratch. A writer always, always, always takes inspiration! And it's in these details that these bonds of relation are forged because the writers will, inevitably, end up sourcing inspiration from their environment. Their knowledge will inevitably spawn their own interpretation of said knowledge, knowledge that comes from, again, their environment - the things they read about, that they see, that they experience. It's how allegory works, it's how satire works - we recognize these patterns because we know they come from an established source. And hey, who says that Piccolo hasn't also been claimed by some fans of the character in India? Or other places? It's not really some imperialist conquest lmao It's a way of claiming one's way of relating to a character, not actually affirming some notion of actually, straight up *owning* a character. And, like, bruh, don't give me that shit either lmao I am on the spectrum myself Characters who are meant to represent neurodivergent people have been written as "aliens" in the past and present. It's a trope. People recognize said trope. People relate to that trope. Even if there are problematic aspects to it, that doesn't diminish the existing connection such characters made with the audience whom they're supposed to represent. Characters like Data are still capable of touching on that felt sense of otherness that many neurodivergent people relate to. I myself used to relate a lot to various "weirdos" and "aliens" in fiction because I felt like a weirdo too! To this day, a character who's view of typical "humanity" is detached yet not hostile to it is capable of invoking a sense of connection from me. There are more elegant ways of doing representation and I do prefer it being addressed directly instead of mostly being driven by audiences extrapolating their own meaning from works but you can't just close your eyes and ignore the cultural impact these "coded" characters had on various communities!

Another thing to consider is his appearance in the Sonic OVA from the 90's, depicted as a traveling treasure hunter, with a cowboy styled hat, alluding to Indiana Jones or even The Man with No Name or any mysterious stranger cowboy characters, characters who are typically depicted as white. What Im saying is, Knuckles is his own thing that can have various ideas imprinted on him, and at this point all these things mixed, his hat even appeared in a promo image for the new series, so having influence from interpretations that are "coded" differently, its surface level to say he can only be one, and in my opinion is very reductive to boil his character down to race.

Is Knuckles black, you ask? Why…no, he’s red 🙂 In all seriousness, I think part of the beauty of these anthropomorphic characters is that the audience can impart their own personal interpretations without being wrong. A character like SpongeBob might be considered “white” by most in the U.S., it wouldn’t be wrong if a child were to interpret SpongeBob as a “Steve Urkel” type of character. Personally speaking, I always thought of Bender from Futurama as being a “black” character since I thought that was the race of his voice actor, which turned out to be a white guy. So for me, I’d rather leave the answer up to the individual (especially if it’s a child) and have them impart their own perceptions onto the characters. The Swedish kids can view all of the Sonic characters as being “white”, the Nigerian kids view them as “black”, and the Korean kids view them as “Asian” for all I care.
