I did Trans PRK last week for my myopia. The procedure of the surgery is just as you describe it. No discomfort, and the whole process takes about two minutes for each eye. Before the surgery, my doctor gave me an Atarax (sedative), although I don't think I showed any signs of anxiety. I guess they give it to everyone before the surgery, just in case. Later that day, and also for two days after the surgery, I had some discomfort, and at times, a burning feeling in my eyes, mostly when I had them opened. But it was nothing I couldn't handle. Also, the protective contact lenses are giving me a little bit of discomfort. I can't wait to have them removed tomorrow! The only thing that is kind of annoying for me, is that my vision has not cleared fully yet. Of course I could already see a lot better right after the surgery, but it still is as if I have just a little bit of myopia. I was told it takes about two weeks for your vision to get perfect. So, hopefully, I will get better vision pretty soon!!

I think anything dry absorbs more, so I found if I applied at the roots first and then waited and pulled it through to the bottom only for a little bit at the end it helped me avoid what you're talking about.
