    Thanks for posting these lessons. I'm working my way through them, and I'm sure I'll be revising when I'm finished. I can imagine it must be really difficult and time consuming for you to create all this content. Your work is very much appreciated. I have a small question about the very last section of this lesson (lesson 8, 23.. When you're conjugating two verbs in the past tense, is it not always required to conjugate the second verb? I noticed the first verb is conjugated but not the second in this particular example.

  • @Monoglossia
    @Monoglossia24 күн бұрын

    Thank you very much for the kind words! When two verbs are used (in the past but also the present, etc.), they always need to both be conjugated; and the second one is always conjugated in the present tense. In fact, there are no unconjugated verbs in Buglarian as there are no infinitives. However, I think what might be confusing is that the conjugation is not always the same as the one we use in the present simple tense. The reason for this is that many Bulgarian verbs have two forms - perfective and imperfective. When talking in the present tense, we use the imperfective forms, but when we have two verbs together, the second one is always in the perfective form. For example, let's look at ex.23 of lesson 8. First we have 'реших да празнувам' ('I decided to celebrate'). The second verb, 'празнувам' is conjugated in the exact same way as we would in the present simple - 'аз празнувам' ('I celebrate'). However, if we use another verb in the second place, such as 'to send', the combination will be 'реших да изпратя' ('I decided to send'), when in the present tense, we say 'аз изпращам' and not 'аз изпратя'. The reason is that for this verb, the perfective and imperfective forms are different. I hope this helps and I understand if it is confusing!

I was wondering if you could perhaps make a video about the differences between the Bulgarian and Macedonian languages one day. I've heard the languages are very similar, with the difference being primarily a consequence of Serbian influence on Macedonian - but I couldn't find much examples online. I think it would be an interesting topic. Greetings from Amsterdam!

  • @Monoglossia

    In isolation, it just means “Don’t!” It can also be used in the negative imperative - “Недей да правиш това!” is the same as “Не прави това!” (“Don’t do this!”)

    Hi guys, I have a question, why is it пий the imperative of to drink? Is it that the verbs that end wit two vowels make imperative with the vowel + й? just like играя ? And a question out of the topic, how do you make the conjugation of verb "to hide" - крия? would it be "той крий" for "he hides" ?

  • @Monoglossia
    @MonoglossiaАй бұрын

    Yes, apart from some exceptions, that's absolutely correct - if a verb ends with two vowels (the last one being -я in the 1st person singular), the imperative ends in -й. The conjugation of крия is: аз крия ти криеш той/тя/то крие ние крием вие криете те крият Also, note that "той крие" means "he hides (something)". If there is no object, the reflexive form should be used - аз се крия, ти се криеш, ... Hope this helps!

    Здравейте! Аз съм Алекс. Съм от Румъния. Обичам много български език. Обичам по закуска сандвич и кафе с мляко. We have many words in Romanian from Bulgarian. And very interesting is the Romanian word "zacusca" which actually in Romanian is a tomato and eggplant salad. I wonder how this happened during the centuries. It seems to be a word borrowed from Bulgarian. Do/Did Bulgarians use to eat tomato and eggplant salad for breakfast?

  • @Monoglossia
    @Monoglossia2 ай бұрын

    Здравей, Алекс! Wow, that’s very interesting. I don’t think that eggplant has ever been a breakfast item for Bulgarians (it’s seen as quite heavy). However, “закуска” does not mean only “breakfast”, especially in the past - it can be any snack or small amount of food (etymologically I think it means something like “to take small bites”), so maybe it fits as something easy to make that’s less than a whole meal 😊 Please do keep us posted about fun Romanian-Bulgarian links!
