    This video is absolutely beautiful, the accoustics are fantastic, it captures the crisp nuances of the piano sounds played masterfully by the gifted Miss Wang in addition brings Yuja Wang masterful fingerings so close much better than the best seat of the music hall.

    Beautiful performance. Couldn’t help but notice the entire audience is masked, but none of the performers are. In my musical group, we had to put masks over all of our instruments, such as trumpet bells. I hope both the audience and musicians noticed the double standard on display.

  • @jgassman
    @jgassman6 күн бұрын

    Are you suggesting the brass section should cover their bells during Rachmaninov? And speaking for the violin section, there's no way I'd be able to perform with a mask on. It's hardly a double standard when the people on stage are working their asses off and the audience is sitting still listening. And the *entire* audience is not masked - looks like it was a choice.

  • @dean1103
    @dean11036 күн бұрын

    @@jgassman look at 26:37 - They are all masked. And no I think masking the brass section is stupid. Just as stupid as it is to require the audience to mask up for safety while not a single performer is masked. You say it is not a double standard because the performers are working hard. If covid is so dangerous and masks work, then “they are working their asses off” is no excuse for putting the performers lives at risk.

  • @FishbirdDD
    @FishbirdDD5 күн бұрын

    @@dean1103 It is not reasonable, in this situation, for the musicians to be wearing masks; however, it is quite reasonable for the audience to be (for reasons already discussed). Of course the only way to prevent viruses from spreading at all would be to cancel the performance, but instead they chose to compromise by doing what they could without inhibiting the performers. No, it's not perfect, but it's not supposed to be.

    Just finished listening to a video from 1993 with Grigory Solokov . Even from the beginning comparison can't be fair as Maestro Sokolov performance is by far within the feelings of the Composer . It is indeed a difficult piece but energy and emotion should come out in more clear manner . Very good performance but something was amiss in my opinion .

    Sometimes the design must be torn from your soul. You are never the same after but you have given it shape. Plato decried the rhapsodes and in effect the inspirations for all performance - all too mechanistic - emblematic of a bleak utilitarian outlook; yet when you have given all there is to give, what is left? The performance requires you to reach deep into your soul to deliver... again and again. So yes I like this; I respect what Yuta Wang does. It burns out more and more but if it is your life, this is what must be done.

    @@mikekarren5010 In another life I studied Plato and Aristotle, and when I took up writing I realised I had to look back and check what I'd read. You can't go back and once you take in the thought, it is all pervasive - everything that is, bears the mark. You can't go back with everything rewritten, but if you can, well that's the seeming of more than one life on this Earth 🙂

    He isn't conducting - he looks like he has the serious shakes. How the hell an orchestra can follow him I do not know (mind you - as a friend of Putin and ally of the war going on in Ukraine, there aren't many orchestras left who would WANT to follow him). As for the performance - no musicality at all. Done to show off

    I'm having trouble hearing all the notes. The orchestra is drowning out Yuja, especially during the delicate pianissimo passages. Is it poor mic placement or simply bad hall acoustics? So much of it is out of balance. Altogether an underwhelming and disappointing performance of this magnificent masterwork.
