    The soon-to-be discontinued LCD 512 GB variant went on sale, lower than the mass-produced 256 GB. As much as I would have liked to have OLED, that was a deal that was just too good to pass up. I've been played with the original LCD switch and I've NEVER had problems with the experience. So I went and bought the LCD version. I am excited for it to arrive!

    I dont know which one should i buy asus ally z1 extreme or Asus ally x. Technically i like more the z1 extreme because its even cheaper but i don't evon know if is worth it 2024 so in the future will asus rog ally have updates system or when asus rog ally x comes out the system updates on z1 will cut off !

  • @CGD.Studio
    @CGD.Studio5 күн бұрын

    It'll have the exact same chipset and you can even sideload AMD's drivers if ASUS ever cuts off support. The Z1 Extreme is just a tweaked 7840U, nothing else, which is a good thing essentially. it's definitely worth buying in 2024! Now more than ever! It's cheaper, more polished, and has everything you need. Plus, it's gonna get the upcoming Armory Crate 1.5 update or whatever it's called, a complete UI overhaul etc. You should only start "worrying" about updates once the Ally 2 comes out, but even then ASUS will have a reason to stick with the original Ally because so many people bought it. 🙌

    Really love this video, i sold all my handhelds because i know we are at the verge of a huge performance to efficiency ratio break through for handhelds, but im missing out in my gaming, wondering if its still worth getting a steam deck OLED? then waiting it out, far cheaper than a rog ally x (plus i support value way more than dodgy asus)

  • @CGD.Studio
    @CGD.Studio6 күн бұрын

    Sure it's worth it! Now's the best time to buy any "older" device. 😁 I'd personally go with an LCD Steam Deck if I were you, you can get one for like $250/$275 depending on your region, or like $330 or something which is a steal. You'll always be able to sell it at an acceptable loss, as someone will always be looking to buy a Steam Deck. That LCD model is seriously underrated. Delivers, like, 80% of the experience for a fraction of the cost. Insane stuff. And Windows works flawlessly too, in my experience and testing, much more stable than on the Ally for whatever reason (without having to resort to Hibernation). Didn't have a game crash on me for more than a year!

    I know this is a few months late but as an avid windows user myself, I've come up with a little trick/way to have consistent quick resume on the Ally. Windows does not like suspending an app when it's running to put it to sleep or hibernate. BUT from my years with windows and growing up in Nigeria with limited access to 24hour power. A way that we or I'd say me and my friends made sure to continue our game after we run out of power is to MINIMIZE first, then HIBERNATE or SLEEP. idk i think if you minimize it windows safely suspends the app, and when you put it in sleep it keeps that safe suspension. So i transferred that knowledge over to the ALLY and quick resume works perfectly for me to be honest. I just press the Armory crate button to instantly minimize/suspend my game, then put it to sleep. When I come back it takes me straight to Armory Crate which shows which game is still running and then i click it and Viola, the game is back like it never even went to sleep, no stuttering or etc. Idk if it helps everyone but it sure has helped me a lot. PS. for some reason it works better with sleep than hibernate cuz this particular method has seen my game crash alot more when I come back from Hibernate than sleep, idk what it is but aye it's something.

    Huh. That's interesting, never thought about trying it. It's not a complete fix, but it's a minor inconvenience. Much better than what we have right now. Lots of people just shut down their games fully which I think is ludicrous for a kind of device that costs this much. I'll make sure to try it out tomorrow! 🙌 If it works as you say, then it definitely needs to be talked about more! Thanks, you might be onto something. 😄

    I love the option, that's for sure. It pretty much fixes every issue I have with the Ally (and the Legion Go, as well). Most of my games are on Game Pass, though, so it's not a good option for me *personally*. But if you have the patience and the know-how, I'd say it's 100% worth it. Bazzite seems to be the better option over ChimeraOS, but they both have their pros and cons.

    Great review! At 14:00 you mentioned that the 7940HS in the g14 will perform worse than the 7840HS in the legion 5 due to thermal throttling, im wondering if thats also the case with the 7940hs in the slim 5, as they dont sell a 4060 version of the slim 5 14 with a 7840hs where i live, only 7940hs :(

  • @CGD.Studio
    @CGD.Studio15 күн бұрын

    Thank you, friend! 🙌 Glad you liked it! I think the 7940HS is gonna run perfectly fine. The temps and throttling are tied to how much juice ASUS gives the CPU on the 2023 G14. Lenovo is a lot more conservative and, as a result, the 7840HS performs better (in gaming and short workloads, at least). The difference in performance between them is minimal, if I'm not mistaken, but I'm pretty confident you're not gonna run into any issues. 👍

    You have AMD adrenaline software open. I bet it flickers like that only there in igpu mode. That's not PWM likely it's VRR flicker. PWM looks differently and is captured on a slow motion videos. • @CGD.Studio
    @CGD.Studio20 күн бұрын

    Interesting, just gave the whole video a look after a few months and yeah, the flickering only appeared with AMD's Adrenaline. Could be, don't have the laptop any more to test it out but it sure does seem like it. The laptop doesn't have VRR though? 🤔 Thank you for watching! 🙌

  • @alansidak6533
    @alansidak653320 күн бұрын

    @@CGD.Studio my theory is that Adrenaline takes all control over the igpu and messes up something with refresh rates and sync. I'm not sure how to explain it better. Few weeks ago one dude was complaining on reddit about the flicker in Adrenaline software while using his OLED Asus laptop. He also disabled VRR and stuff and thought it's PWM. But it happened only in Adrenaline. So not PWM likely. Sorry not trying to correct you or something. I'm sensitive to flickering myself, so I just pay extra attention on this and try to use quality IPS

The OG Ally will sell for even less once the X comes out. That's a fantastic device for like $400-450! In any case, saving money always makes sense. Heck, people are like "it's too soon for ASUS to make any moves" and yet they just announced a Strix Point Zephyrus G16 even though the 8000 series came out like 5 months ago. These companies have to react fast, they don't care about the consumer, it's just business ("nothing personal").

    Hello hello! Lenovo Vantage is included by default, and it worked well in my testing. Not too bloated like MyASUS and similar applications. I tried out Lenovo Toolkit as well and it worked about the same. Much more streamlined and a bit faster. I personally didn't have a preference, but I assume most people will use Toolkit as it's lighter, starts up faster, and has a bit more options when it comes to customizability.

    @CGD.Studio24 күн бұрын

    Glad you liked it! 🙌 Ah, *personally*, I would just buy a used or refurbished Steam Deck LCD for like $250 and use that until Strix Point comes out. Or, if you need the power and just want Windows (and don't want to install Windows on your Steam Deck), then the original Ally would be the way to go. The Ally X is gonna be amazing, there's no doubt about it, but it'll still have the same software-related bugs that the original model has (due to Windows), and it's gonna perform like 10% better which, in my opinion, isn't worth the higher asking price. Twice the battery life is great, but you're still gonna be needing a charger if you're gonna be playing AAA games. I would 100% get a Steam Deck (unless you need Windows and don't want to install it yourself + the official drivers + handheld companion and whatever else) because it offers the core handheld gaming experience. And then I'd spring for a Strix Halo device as soon as they are available, cause they're gonna make AAA gaming a lot more viable. You can't go wrong in my opinion, but spending as less money as possible at this point in time makes the most sense. The AAA games I want to play can't run that well on the Ally or Legion Go (working on a review!) without using too much FSR (and looking like a PS1 game), and for anything less demanding the LCD Steam Deck is still more than capable. Btw, Windows runs great on it, Game Pass as well, sleep/wake too.

    Very informative video. Though I agree with you on the next Ally is a nicer machine, we have to remind ourselves, there is no investment in technology. Its a depreciating purchase so if you want to buy now, why not. The next device will always be better. As long as you get hours of entertainment for that $ you paid, its worth it. I might get the Ally X if I like what they have to present this Sunday and replace my need for a new gaming laptop to play games and edit videos. Also, we cannot be sure when Asus will release the Ally 2. You know they will try to sell the Ally X as long as they can until they know competition catches up and customer sentiment is lowering. However, I appreciate the headups and giving us info on the next generation specs.

  • @CGD.Studio
    @CGD.Studio25 күн бұрын

    Thank you! 🙌 I totally get where you're coming from, and your thinking *is* sound and logical, but we're at an inflection point, and these companies know it. There's a reason why Apple released the M4 just mere months after the M3 line-up came out - they're starting to face some very real competition from Qualcomm and even AMD and Intel (Strix Point, Lunar Lake). There's also news of the first Strix Point mini PCs coming out no later than October(ish) of this year, so there's a very real chance of, say, AYANEO or GPD (or someone else) coming out with a Strix Point handheld before the end of the year. They move fast. And once Strix Point becomes available, all other (previous) devices will pale in comparison. So a June/July 2025 release date for the ROG Ally 2 is very realistic, and it might happen even sooner if the rumor mill is to be believed. I can totally envision an announcement around CES in January of next year and then an early release. These companies make moves whenever they can and whenever there's something that can be released. There's a reason why the Ally X is going to be equipped with the same Z1 Extreme - there's nothing else on the market that's viable at the moment, but that's gonna chance rather quickly.

    Fascinating. I know that Lenovo has China-only AMD CPUs in a few of their laptops (with an S suffix instead of HS) but I didn't think there'd be a 4070 Slim 5 14 over there. Interesting. It's probably legit. It's just strange that they haven't been selling it in other regions. Weird decisions. They have the best bang-for-the-buck 14" gaming laptop on the market and they haven't done much with it. Don't know why.

    I like the fact that you are in Europe. I'm in France and prices here are insane. What's your country exactly if you don't mind? I'll follow your channel since a lot of ytbers are in USA
