I don't know why this isn't considered a classic, "we forgive nothing" is one of my favourite moves quotes of all time. William Hickey says it with such vehemence, you can only guess how many men have died as a result of his zero forgiveness policy.

What a great movie. Dark comedy at it's best. But then you have all those damn talented Huston people in it! From the old man in Serria Madre with Bogart to John and the african queen, outside of the Barrymores, the Hustons were Hollywood royalty.

Forget Brando. Hickey was the best Godfather on film. Brando could never be this funny, endearing and dangerous in the same scene. The Academy missed a big one here.

Just got a comment from someone who called the film "a parody of the mafia" and that I probably didn't know it was adapted from a book. a) Yes, I am aware it is adapted from a book (I'm a teacher: I read books); and b) no, sorry, but the "mafia" is a criminal terrorist gang in Palermo, Sicily, these are (again) FICTIONAL American characters. The only thing being parodied here are Italian Americans. Fighting stereotypes by creating the same stereotypes isn't parody. It is blatant mockery. BTW: Liking the film doesn't mean you're "anti-Italian." It does mean that you've become so innoculated against the crude quality of these stereotypes that you defend them without attempting to look at them critically. Every single performer in this film hams it up, outrageously. The only purpose, again, is mockery.

Because i'd like to point out that your own mocking tone via my response is precisely what endless films like this have encourged, and hardened, in viewers--the idea that Italians are dimwits. "Manchurian Candidate" remains a fine movie. Plenty of wit but no mean-spirited caricatures.

C'mon, everyone: Please stop. This performance is the Italian American equivalent of what Stepin' Fetchit was to Blacks and the Frito Bandito was to Hispanics: a crude caricature. Good make-up doesn't equal good acting. Same thing with the exaggerated Noo Yawk accents. And I hate to break it to everyone but these are FICTIONAL characters who have no relation to real-life Italian Americans---just to the caricatures of them. It's 2021: Wake up!

sorry but. I saw this movie yesterday just for Jack Nicholson and William Hickey, and in my opinion is not so great as everyone says, the pace it's so slow and boring, I almost fell asleep, it looks so bad for a 1985 movie....
