Markeology

I'm a doctor, but not *that* kind (I have a Ph.D. in Anthropology/Archaeology). I’m a passionate weight loss surgery advocate because my own life has been transformed by bariatric surgery.

This channel follows my own weight loss journey and my continuing recovery from chronic illness (ME/CFS, POTS, MCAS), with the goal of encouraging others who may be considering weight loss surgery and supporting those who have already had it done.

    I know I've never weighed 300 lbs but I'm curious as to being okay with 182. I know you said losing to 160 and gaining back to 175 you would be okay. I weighed 193 at 5'6 and in the process of getting to 145. My goal is to go to the doctor and not have "obese" written in my file because at 185 and 5'6 I am obese. Hopefully, I will get to 145 to 150 and maintain it. I was small as a teenager. Weighed between 110 and 115. Does it bother you that at 182 your doctor will still label you as obese? It drives me nuts to know someone who wouldn't know my weight loss journey and saw my file stating I'm obese it's like flashing red lights in my mind. Congratulations though on what you and your husband have accomplished so far.

    Excellent information! I must add " dumping syndrome" will be a cause of our own doing. We know to eat slow, fatty foods and food full of sugar are not an option anymore. If we follow the guidelines then we should be fine. ❤

    How do you feel with new diet requirements? Any regrets or concerns or difficulties in adjusting to what you can or can't eat any more? How do you adjust to egg sized portions, when all restaurants serve football sized or larger portions? Do you really get used to using a microwave to heat up leftovers all the time? Do you have to reduce recipe sizes? Are there foot groups you've given up such as sugar? How long did the withdrawal of that take?

    Thank you so much your last word touched my heart. “ being obese is not a moral failure “ I wish people who stigmatized me saw that. I wish my own primary doctor who was supposed to know me better and my health problems wouldn’t make me feel bad about my weight because I am not doing enough in her opinion.

    I hate that we come here to be encouraged and instead, when looking through the comments, we have these miserable people trying to scare the crap out of us because they are the minority that didn't do well in the surgery. Yes, I know complications can be a thing, but statistics show the benefits far outweigh the potential risks that happen to very few people. It sounds like some people are just miserable and want us to be too.

    Hi there . I just found your channel , and yes my only complaint was I wish I did it sooner lol ! I cancelled my surgery twice because I was beyond scared .It took me 5 years to commit . What a waste !! I’m 65 now and I had Rouxny 5 1/2 years ago . I started at 235 and lost 105 pounds . I’m only 5’2 !!im so happy I did it but now comes the crappy part….. I was fine until covid . I made banana bread and started drinking wine ( never drank much before) so I slowly gained 12 pounds . Now I’ve gained 30 pounds all together and am desperate to loose it . I have a bad problem of not wanting to eat until later evening ….. bad bad bad ! So I cut down on the wine and started Ozempic ( I figured if it’s good for Oprah , it’s good for me lol ) so here I am 3 weeks into Ozempic and my fear is real once again hoping it’s going to work . Don’t have big side effects yet just a bit nauseous sometimes and have some acid issues . Hopefully it will subside . Sorry I talk so much but I’m sure you and your lovely wife understand totally . Good luck on your life journey 😘Happy to have found you both .

    I know this video is 3 years old at this point, but came across it since I am getting my bypass sooon (less than 2 weeks!) and have been looking into a lot of videos to feel some reassurance and listen to what other patients have to say about their experience. This has been by far one of my favorite videos so far. You sir, moved me to tears with your words. I am now much more happy about my decision and ready to give it my 100%. I hope you and your wife are living the healthiest and best version of this lifetime!

    I feel you. I’m having a revision of the gastric sleeve to the bypass next week due to severe acid reflux. Nervous….. this was unexpected. But my surgeon says the bypass takes care of any acid reflux. Hoping for the best. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

  • @Louis-kw6yk
    @Louis-kw6ykАй бұрын

    @@ELchambelan bypass basically "cures" acid reflux, that's why i went for it instead of sleeve (also because generally bypassed individuals dont have revisions, and i was afraid of having to go that route, hopefully it's gonna be okay for u)

    Had RNY in 2011 and lost 100lbs. I did it because I was getting more and more diabetes meds added on. I went into remission for about 3 years before diabetes returned even with the weight loss. I have now been on Ozempic for two years and following a low carb to no carb diet. My BMI weight should be 96lbs. Down to 104lbs now. But I still have to practice TRE, 16/8 eating cycle to keep my glucose low. Ozempic makes it doable. Hope someday I will figure this all out and be drug free.

The people agianst the surgery have never been 590 pounds yo yoing back and forth 100 pounds at a time. I realy did give it my best shot before choosing this so they can get on board or get out of my life!

    I had gastric sleeve surgery 2 years ago but was not able to lose more than 40 pounds. I can feel my hunger creeping back especially because I have a very active lifestyle so I've decided to try Ozempic. I got a prescription from my doctor but haven't filled it yet and was curious if people with former weight loss surgery are able to get away with taking less of the medication because of the reduced stomach size?

  • @punkin60

    I was on the lowest dose for over a year and just bumped up to 1.0. I have had times where I did not take it and maintained. One bout of nausea at the beginning but I didn’t attribute it to Ozempic. Didn’t know it was a side effect…LOL

    I think staying on 2.5 for maintenance. But, most will gain the weight back if they don’t change lifestyle and quit eating processed garbage foods.
