I think I got my sewing machine for £10. The lady selling it said it had missing parts and maybe someone could fix it or use some parts. My grandad fixed it up and I made me first ever thing with help from someone. (That someone was a construction workers wife 😭 I lived on a site that was still building houses) I made a bag and was over the moon!

Thank you for creating such a comprehensive guide. It was a bit daunting when I bought my machine, but now I have the knowledge to start developing the skill.

As i understand, singer is now owned by a chinese company so its not the same quality and longevity is not the same as say a singer 185K my mom used to own now that they are made with plastic parts. Since i prefer strength over gee-gaws and doo-dads, i opted for a machine that does only 2 stitches. Zig-zag and straight stitch. Its a Consew 2053R, industrial sewing machine. Pay once, cry once at about $1200. But never more do I have to wonder if that loud bang inside the Janome was a plastic gear splitting in half or if something jumped out of time. The speed roars at about 50 stitches per second vs the Janome running at a pedestrian 13 stitches per second, going downhill, with the wind at its back. Ive also never used ANY of those decorative stitches on the Janome. I would trade them all for a knee lift presser. Wait, i DID! I cant laud enough is having an extra " hand" to raise the presser foot out of the way while still holding the work with both hands so it doesnt move. None of these walmart machines have it.
