That's some good footage of days gone by. I was a machinist/toolmaker in '93 with a few years of experience. I still am today. A lot has changed since then, that's for sure.

Crazy how this place is now just a big box hardware store, a Dollar Tree, and maybe a couple other things now. I don't know how well this little snapshot in history is reflects west MI culture in 1971, but it just feels like everyone is so much more uptight, proper, "sweet and innocent" in how they present themselves.

"That's what Daddy wanted; a turquoise toilet." 😂 Reminds me of a scene from Jackass: The Movie. One of the guys goes into a hardware store (not Home Depot), and defecates in a display toilet. That toilet was also turquoise.

This is how I remember learning to pheasant hunt around 1990 with my dad and uncles in rural South Dakota. Miss those simple times.

I grew up on a farm in SW Michigan, we had tons of quail, pheasants, rabbits all over our farm and all the adjoining farms which we also hunted had lots of game on them. A government agent came in the mid-60s and took away our DDT which ended farming for us because the replacement Malathion was cost prohibitive. We used to fill up our spray rig by our pond from a deep well, the DDT foamed and my dad was too cheap to buy anti-foaming additive so lots of that foam ended up saturating the ground. In the springtime the pond flooded and the water-level got up to that saturated sand, in 25 years there were never fish, or frog or turtle die-offs in the pond. One year we used Malathion and the next summer the pond surface was covered with fish, frongs and turtles. So as you have described the modern planting techniques of utilizing every inch of dirt and the modern chemicals has turned your area into a wildlife desert. Too bad, it used to really be a nice hunting area,, we moved to Eastern Washington and it was tremendous but because of modern practices it too is a wildlife desert with only farm raised birds that cant fly. Have a nice day.......

I live in Syracuse, NY and this sounds exactly like what we experience with the “dome effect” coming off of Lake Ontario. The geography isn’t so much flat since we have the Adirondacks nearby, but it is cold, snowy and gray from November to April, sometimes even until May. But the sunny, relatively mild summers are nice indeed!

You know, I sympathize with both mother and father here. Papa comes home from work, drained of energy, frustrated with the traffic, wanting only some quiet time after his long, hard day. Mama is still standing in the middle of her work, drained of energy, frustrated from dealing with egocentric younglings with needs that must be met with little delay, wanting only some quiet time after her long, hard day. So, what's the solution? Perhaps all those wonderful, church-going people might consider offering their services as post-work-day baby sitters for young parents, free of charge, as a service to their Christian community and for the glory of the God they supposedly worship. Or, perhaps the church could operate a 3 to 9 PM once -a-week drop off FREE day-care so frazzled parents could have an interlude in their week to look forward to.

GRPD was the first agency to use E-Units, followed by Kent County Sheriff, Wyoming PD, and Kentwood PD. Ottawa County Sheriff started later. Then Ingham County Sheriff (Lansing area) and later Genesee County (Flint area) Sheriff also had E-Units. I spent 15 years as a Paramedic Deputy Sheriff with Ingham County. Over the years, other EMS units took over the role and I believe Genesee County is the only law enforcement agency still providing full ALS care. It was an interesting time when the police had the best platform to provide the service. There also is a video called, “A New Image” that goes into great detail explaining the establishment of the Kent County Police E-Unit Program.
