Fascinating. All the classic Bartok Idioms and harmonic devices are there. Only a genius could make something so discordant and complex so fascinating, engaging and simply listenable.

This piece is so powerful, and so brilliantly crafted, and full of arresting melodic ideas. The fact that this serious music was written when Copland was only 22 is amazing. One of the all-time great short works for piano.

I can’t even imagine how you read all those arpeggios in mvmt 2 with all those accidentals
The beginning of the first Etude sounds like constipation 😅

For those of you, who can't get rid of the feeling you know the main theme in the 3rd movement: after few hours of having it in my head, I recognized a mix of Bloch's Fugue from the Concerto Grosso and Shostakovich's own 4th movement of the Cello sonata. No idea if he had it in his mind, but I am satisfied. :)

My favorite version among the many ones here ... Not too slow, very moving. And most of all, the minimum required of rubato. This is insane how much rubato some great pianists feel obliged to put in this so beautiful piece of music. The music is absolutely wonderful and moving by itself: no need to add any "romantic" exaggeration !!!
I've studied this prelude in the past and it sounds like a good rendition to me

Herr Bach would've been very proud to this arrangement by Maestro Fiorentino. The extension of the counterpoint is adventurous but masterfully done. I'm going to look up more things about this Sergio and see if his original compositions stack up to his arrangements. Lovely!

Ok the way I see it, the E♭ minor prelude is about 20 seconds long and begs for some exploration of material. Balakirev gives us that, so I’ll take it.

At exactly 2:04, the bar just before the modulation to the Ab major is one of the greatest things ever composed in my opinion. If you start listening from around 1:45, you expect the phrase to conclude at 2:04 in D sharp minor (as it has happened before in the piece). However, quite suddenly we are in B major, and then we descend into D sharp minor, G sharp minor, back to B major and then to D sharp minor where the D sharp is treated as E flat in the next bar and acts as the fifth of A flat major. The unexpected shift to B major at 2:04 specifically is marvelous. The shift to B major and the descent to D sharp minor is at the same time hopeful yet melancholic. I lack the words to describe it, if the phrase concluded at D sharp minor, it would have been more tragic but this way, switching to B major in small fleeting instances, makes the piece more melancholic and more mysterious.
