We have the best job in the world making sure you have choices and the no B.S. truth about what you are spending your hard-earned money on. We tell it like it is. Are you still diving Miflex? How does it perform in water - I’ve heard that it tends to float, which is distinctly different from rubber hoses sinking. I’m considering setting up a new regulator set long hose, and definitely do not want the long hose getting floaty, that would not be good. Second question - does the coating degrade and/or become ‘haired’ or have strands poking out?

    Quick note on full face snorkel masks. They are really great with one exception. If you like to dive down when snorkeling the amount of air they hold makes it hard to descend. Excellent on the surface because that they also hold your head up a bit but they make diving down much more difficult.

    … but you can’t back fin or frog kick properly with them. You can flutter, sure; great for being a gentle fin… but there are other directions except straight forward. RK3’s are a denser fin and are tougher to kick, I’ll agree. But they s as re super responsive and move you on a dime in any direction

    I thought your comment about having the transmitter eliminates the need for gauges was interesting. As a newer diver, I was taught that's it's always important to have a backup whether it's analog or digital.

    Great question. My friend, everyone varies on this issue. Usually, a result of a personality type issue. Please watch our video on how much gear is enough. That will answer clearly but for the sake of the answer here. I trust the gear that I purchase. Recreational diving, I don't need redundancy. Worst case scenario is that I abort a dive. But, I learned prior to computers. I can dive a watch only if necessary. Also I recognize where I am in my dive profile, timing, air consumption, etc and I can recognize if my tank is low just by my breathing. So, tricky answer is that depending on your skill level, experience, advanced training etc your comfort level will grow exponentially. Heck, i often don't even use a bcd. thanks for watching.

  • @amadeuss3341
    @amadeuss334118 күн бұрын

    It depends on what computer you use. If you have suunto , this thing loses signal every other Saturday, so you definitely want an SPG. I removed my SPG after a year of using Shearwater, and put a button gauge into 1st stage - i use it to check tank pressure on fresh cylinder, so i don't have to twinkle with computer, plus i can use it as cross check between gauge and computer, and i can always remove BCD to look at it if in real pich . But i keep SPG set in my luggage, just in case something goes wrong while I'm on vacation. In terms of procedure, if your transmitter fails, you do the same thing as if SPG fails - end the dive , go topside.

    Q: During the video you mentioned that the transmitter also fits in the case with the watch. Is this because you are wrapping the watch around the transmitter (vs. the supplied foam) when you store it back in the case?

  • @LeviathanScuba

    Yeah, basically only bringing the necessary parts n pieces. I never travel with the transmitters on the regs but without the extra strap the trans fits with the computer. Question -- Given your experience with Shearwater Tern TX now -- and the announcement of the PEREGRINE TX this week --- (plus other experience with Teric, presume others Perdix or Peregrine), What are your thoughts for aging eyes on Peregrine TX vs Tern TX readability (given Peregrine and Peregrine TX have same display)? Why would you pick a TERN TX over a PEREGRINE TX -- or would you?

  • @LeviathanScuba
    @LeviathanScuba18 күн бұрын

    Awesome question and we have been discussing this exact question with our staff. First, the Peregrine, Perdix screens are for sure larger. And on bright, they are very easy to see. But, The Teric, Tern screens are higher resolution and get brighter again extremely easy to see even with my 62 year old eyes. It is going to be a personal choice for most. Any shop that sells Shearwater should have both to look at side by side. To answer your question accurately and personally, I would choose the Tern TX. My personal reason is that I will put it on before my trip and except for charging take it off when my trip is over. It is very much like a watch and performs that function. The battery so far is far outlasting the Teric. Plus the size is not a restriction for my eyes yet. If I wore the Perdix, Peregrine, I would take it off between dives or at least at the end of the dive portion of the day. Hope it helps. Freddy

  • @paulkrein

    Your personal feedback is much appreciated Freddy. Love the channel too. With the new need for readers, I am still torn. Love the readability of Amoled, and the pragmatic portability of the watch style as you describe. The extra spacing between data on the Peregrine seems visually appealing. Anyone else on the trip prefer the larger display? (Albeit hard to imagine.)

    Tern TX or Peregrine TX so you have AI. I bought a Tern TX right when it came out, because I thought that was the best value features wise for the money at the time and I needed one. I have an Apple Watch for daily wear, so having more options now I would pick the Peregrine TX solely based on the larger screen.

  • @LeviathanScuba

    See a few of the comments above to help with more information. My answer is that choose air integrated versions always. If you can't afford it yet, it won't be long because the transmitter isn't so expensive that you can't just save a bit more to get the air integrated version. As of this week, the peregrine tx just came out. Less expensive than the Tern TX. Check it out. Freddy You might also want to find our video on how to choose a dive computer. I been diving since 95 and found I like both. Like most gear, I have a set of each.. usually I use stiff US Diver Blades for SCUBA- Precision and power for up to an hr. And then Tusa stiff Split fin for all day relaxing drifting snorkeling, little to no cramp, soft kicking, can wear all day.

  • @LeviathanScuba

    Sounds like a perfect plan. Interesting that Tusa invented a foot pocket that you can buy 5 different blades to match your style of diving. Easily switched out if you want to change. Hay freddy, first off thank you for being so ingormative and protective of other divers. I really appreciate your info. I have a question on wing bcd. How newbie friendly are they? Im willing to spend a little more for them becaude my end goal is to be able to dual tank and i dont want to buy a single tank bcd and then buy another dul tank bcd later on. Thanks again!

  • @LeviathanScuba
    @LeviathanScuba18 күн бұрын

    You are most welcome. So, tricky answer as you are a newbie. Which I love that you are thinking about adding to your skills in the future. First answer is if you truly add dual tank diving to your skill folder you most likely will have different sets of gear. Without knowing you, I will speak generally. Twin tanks sounds cool, however extremely rare. Why you may ask is that recreational trips, resorts, dive boats cater to the 99.99% crowd. I haven't seen anyone dive twin tanks for 12 years. If you are on the coast and doing it with your buddy on the weekends then great but almost no one today dives twins. That is a lot of time underwater without a break. Brings up more concerns with decompression sickness etc. Changing your gear over from single tank diving to double takes time and not the easiest transition if you are traveling. Example if you are on a dive trip, everyone else will be on singles. The divemasters won't just leave you down while everyone else surface intervals on the boat. Not to mention the expense. Special valves, manifold, regulator or two depending on how you do it. Weight and as you are wondering your bcd setup. The actual answer to your question is that it is a little tougher diving a twin back plate design. But once you are used to it, not a problem at all. Your greatest sacrifice will be convenience and expense. I hope this helps a bit. I will say most divers that get technical have more than one set of gear depending on what you plan on doing.

  • @coralkeyscuba
    @coralkeyscubaАй бұрын

    If you are needing some warmth then get the M/6. The small gap above the waist is fine. Very common, but when you bend forward you draw the suit tighter in the back. Plus the Bcd hugs your back helping with the gap. Hugs and zippable is your key. Thanks for watching. More to come soon. Freddy

    if you like em use em. thats my opinion, i personally dont, i have seen frog kicks done with them however it looked pretty awkward, i dont see how you could helicopter turn or back kick tho, the blades tend to splay during back kicks causing you to not really go anywhere, and slipping the fin sidways tends to also cause splay. again tho, if you do not have a need to frog or back kick, i dont see a issue with them.

    Just fine. Normal. If too tight around the neck, you can trim a tiny bit then stitch it so it won't unravel. They call that surging. Go small amounts at a time. 1/8 of an inch. You could cut too much and then get a constant leak around the neck. Thanks for watching. More to come soon. Freddy

    for a full wetsuit, what is more important to follow on the size chart? height or weight? I am under weight for my height so deciding what size to get is difficult.

  • @coralkeyscuba
    @coralkeyscubaАй бұрын

    I cannot really answer that question properly. The final fit is the most important. If suit fits but is too tall you can trim and hem the ankles. If a bit too short, that is usually ok because your dive booties extend up your ankles a bit. Also, review the part about super stretchy neoprene material. Usually under the names, ultra stretch, Hyperstretch, etc. You can get the suit a bit smaller because it stretches a lot. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. More to come soon. Freddy

    I’m 67 and not as nimble as I once was. I just bought my 1st zipper in back (a 3xl, 5mm). I can’t access the pull lanyard without someone putting the lanyard in my hand. Also, even with the lanyard out in my hand the suit (I’ve only had it in the water 2x) I can’t pull the zipper up.This is. Problem as I oft times dive solo. Any tips as to the lanyard and not being able to get the zipper up?

  • @LeviathanScuba
    @LeviathanScuba2 ай бұрын

    A few choices for you. One is to get a front zip suit. They really aren't quite as warm as a back zip but they would work in your case. Second, I replaced my lanyard with one that was about 12 inches longer. I sewed a very small piece of the female part of velcro (the fuzzy side) to the very end. Important to not use the male side because it will grab the suit where you don't want it to. Then I glued a very small piece of the male side to my suit around waist level. It was always where I knew it to be and I could get to it. Even with a bad shoulder I could find it and then when I pull it up I try and extend my arm as far behind me as possible. Imagine pulling up the lanyard without it touching your back. Almost as if I was pulling it back behind me and up at the same time. This seemed to work well. I also keep my zipper greased with silicone grease. Much easier to pull. Hope that helps. Freddy

    I'm looking at getting my first suit, some discussion on 'how close' you need to be to the measurements in the sizing charts would be good. 1/2"? 1"? What if it's off by 2"? What about certain areas, is being off in the chest more lenient than being off in the inseam or hip etc... I think I match a XL Short in Bare but their chest shows 43-45 and I'm about 41.5...

  • @LeviathanScuba
    @LeviathanScuba2 ай бұрын

    To answer your question, better to be a little larger in the waist and hips than the chest. The upper torso leaks or flushes with water a bit easier than the hips do simply because 3 access points at the neck, and both arms. They really should be snug. Hopefully there is a shop where you can try one on first. My advice is to go with a smaller suit. Look for materials like "Hyper stretch, thermo stretch, Hyper flex, etc." You wear them a little smaller but they close the gaps between smaller and larger areas. Hope that helps. Freddy
