    My default stroke, Dad taught me as a kid. I'm often asked about it by other swimmers or told its history/ jokingly asked if I'm a navy seal lol

    When i first started learning swimming, this is one of the videos i watched to learn sidestroke. Unlike others who learnt to swim either freestyle or breaststroke as their first swim stroke, mine was sidestroke. It felt natural to me. Its also my fastest swim stroke.

    Watching this cos i enrolled myself to an adult swim lesson. I got the kick but the hand movement & breathing is hard for me, im running out of breath

  • @ChrisBurtonSwims

    You have to time the breathing. Exhale into the water, so that you are ready to breathe in when your head comes up. Look for your breath early in the stroke. There's an arm stroke drill in this video that may help (kzread.info/dash/bejne/lGRsqdKbcau_h9o.html). You'll may have to fast forward through a couple kick drills to get to it though.

    How is this on the shoulders? Front crawl is rough on mine due to other weight training that i do.

  • @ChrisBurtonSwims
    @ChrisBurtonSwims24 күн бұрын

    It's meant to be a slow, fluid, survival stroke, so I don't feel like it is that tough on the shoulders. The bottom arm does significantly more work than the top arm. You can keep that in mind when trying to determine which side to roll to if one shoulder bothers you more than the other.

    Thank you for your videos. Please, could you tell me how to move faster in the water when waking on the ground of the surface (pool, sea...)? I completed as a kid and the other kids always got to catch me because they walked faster and I could never understand why.

  • @ChrisBurtonSwims

    As a former triathlete, running into the water at the start of a swim or running out of the water at the end of the swim can be tough. At the end of the swim, I would generally try to swim shallow enough so that I could pick my feet up out of the water as I ran towards the shore (high knees). If you are running in waist high water, you can try to pull the water/push the water back with your hands similar to when you're swimming. I don't have any other tricks or insight aside from that.

    THANK YOU! I've been judging for a few months and I DQ'd two swimmers at a meet for the freestyle arms at the turn. Later at another meet, I was only timing, but keeping watch on this specific movement and checking the S&T judge next to me. Nope... no one got DQ'd even though I saw it at least a few times. This is definitely not understood well.

    I watched an episode (season 2 episode 3) of tv show called I Survived and the only way the lady could break through the rip tide currents to get to shore after swimming 9 miles from a boat crash was this side stoke.

    Thank you for this. I have a sensory processing disorder kiddo who needs to pass the swimmers test for scouts BSA first class. Her face and ears being in the water and coordination of breathing is the issue. Test to bypass is, Jump in to depth over head, 75 yards using a stroke of choice going forward and then 25 yards on the back. Include one sharp turn and no stops. Rest by floating. Easiest way to pass is the side stroke. Minimal energy for the 75 yards.
