One of the things I love about Hildegard's music is the way it can be interpreted and reinterpreted over the years and be vital and dynamic and so beautiful in so many different contexts. This is a lovely performance, both for the eyes and the ears.

I believe St. Hildegard sang her psalms in the realms of a castle and she "painted" meaning there were colours ( though in perfect shadows and reflecting black & white) in her songs while she sang. Hence Tibetan bowls are very "quiet" instruments and the drums are the winds complex sounds resonated in the upper most parts of the castles and forests nearby.Forgive my interpretation for I know nothing about music but I do pray quietly.

Thank you for your appreciation. It's not yet been released as a CD, but is in the works, hopefully next year. Contact me, and I'll put you on our mailing. As for your comments: 1) in the original version I did translate all the Coptic closely, but it seemed heavy, and didn't work musically. So we chose art over scholarship. 2) "barbaroi" is the Coptic word for non-Greeks. As you may know, ancient Coptic is a hybrid language, with many Greek borrowings. Even the title is in Greek.

This is greatly appreciated! Thank you. It is also well executed. I just wish the gentleman would recite the complete text in English at appropriate intervals before or after every stanza so one might closer follow the Coptic. The reason is, I would like to know what word the Coptic text uses for "non-Greeks." It varies in the English translations between "barberoi" and "non-Greeks." Just curious.

Thank you for raising this question. Our aim isn't a reconstruction of this music (impossible in any case) but to make it live in today's pluralist, global context. Of course such instruments were not even known to her, but after study of her music and life (Catherine is an expert) we believe, or hope, that if Hildegard were to get to know our era, she'd approve and love these interpretations. Yes, it's a kind of musical fantasy --- but what strict medievalists do is just as much a fantasy.

Not sure I like non-historically-accurate items like the use of tibetan bowls and other asian ideophones. It's kind of hard to think that anyone in the dark ages would know anything about asian cultures. But the renditions are beautiful, and Ms. Braslovsky has a wonderful voice.

I might add that I'm also very inspired by the Gospel of Thomas--- by far the most profound (and also the most historically authentic) of the gospels in my opinion. I am the composer of this piece, but Catherine added a lot of ecstatic improvisation that surprised and delighted me. We're planning to record a much fuller version of it someday.
