So Steve, this is my introduction to Johnny. I’m only assuming he’s an ole Texas boy, or perhaps from Nashville, but maybe you have some background to share. I was referred here because I was telling someone how interesting a player I’ve alway thought Junior Brown is. His reply was, in that case check this out. What I just heard I liked. He’s obviously a seasoned player. Confident and crisp, with all the turnarounds and licks in his hip pocket. I especially like the fact that he’s not trying to burn the place down with volume. It’s nice.

Interesting take on Green Dolphin Street. Its the Pat Metheney sound on a Jazz standard, complete with a long Metheneyesqe intro. It is fast playing that gets tedious after the 10th time through. You never get the switch between the Latin and Swing sections of this standard, which is a large part of its charm. It may be technically interesting, but it is not particularly musical and goes on way to long.
@LowCMusiq2 жыл бұрын
The fact that it says "Guitar Workshop" on the back probably means his rhythm section is comprised of people not as seasoned as him. It seems like he's just being a cool cat and jamming along. Stern is a great artist with a sound and language of his own. I think you're over-analyzing something which really doesn't need it.
