  Also, remember anything that the builder does not offer or install themselves, it will not be included in your warranty with the builder. Great info, thanks! I've seriously thought about having my own custom cabinets made as I just don't like any of the builder options. They're pretty and quality material, I just want a particular color.

  Great tips, some of the methods though make my skin crawl. Destroying the installed counter tops from the builder, storing, then reselling it seems like a nightmare.

  I disagree with the lot, because when i was looking at homes, where it was ane how it was situated made the difference between 1 house and another. Also when it comes to elevation the was a house i saw that was beautiful inside, but I hated the elevation and siding color so i passed on the home

  Great job! Do you know if it costs more at Design center to have different floors/cabinets/countertops in kitchen and bathrooms? Example if I have the same thing throughout or have changes in each room even when choosing standard.

  If there's something your builder includes but you don't like any of the options they offer, identify that before you sign and get that item removed from the contract. If you don't like their benchtops, don't be paying them for a benchtop. Get it written in the contract that you'll source your own benchtop! If you don't like the colours of paint they offer, put it in the contract that you will choose and supply your own paint! Houses are expensive. Don't pay for stuff you don't want.

  I went ahead and upgraded my flooring from carpet to hard surfaces when building my house. It seemed wasteful to have to rip up brand new carpet.

  Tell me what you think I need, I will tell you why I don't need them. Glass canisters; I use vintage tuperware from garage sales. They hold more than all of these new containers made today. Oil bottles, i got them cheap at hood will or dollar tree. One for vinegar and one for oil. Less $ than you paid for one bottle. Cookbook stand/ cookbooks: Nope, I do not keep or use cookbooks. Isn't the internet great! Therefore, I don't need the stand either. Big money saved! Salt and pepper shakers are overrated. But you be you. I have a salt box above my stove. And a cheap pepper mill that is disposable. Amazon cannisters: huge waste of money. They get brittle and break. Again vintage tupperware and a label maker. Rice dispenser: too large. Single purpose equals foolish. We eat a lot of rice, but again tupperware saves the day. No, I do not sell it. I hate the new stuff. Not near the quality it used to be.

  Food labels: again label maker. Keep it simple. Good luck finding them later. Yes, your measuring tools must match. You are going to display them, right? Probably not. Go ahead and stuff them in a drawer or cabinet. Just keeping it real here! Damn, my logical/frugal brain. Shiny new gold cooking utensils, they will make your food taste better. Good luck keeping that container spotless. Of course you are going to link them, then you make more money, right?

  I've never understood the desire for a tub, I have a full size rectangular tub about 6x2 ish and I never use it, never been like 'ooooh can't wait', but maybe in a colder climate it might be more appealing???

  Literally every single reason you gave was 'because when yousell it..'.. if I am BUILDING MY HOUSE and choosing the optioons for it to be the way I want it, I'm not going to choosee different options for it to be the way someone else would want it. If this is how you build a house- don't bother building.
