kzread.info/dash/bejne/eIGdr9yqYLy6p8Y.html Not recent history. But all of you newbies out there need to watch this. Likely the most important Canadian goal in hockey history. Cold War. Russia vs the West. Communism vs the Free World. Plus many, many more subplots. Canadian players being woke up in the middle night by mysterious phone calls. Canadian food the team brought with them disappearing from the hotel. The tension in the series was almost palpable. Canada found out the Russians could play. And we found out that we can never again take opponents lightly. 3000 Canadians cheering on Team Canada in Moscow. Game 8 of the series. Had to win to take it. Canada was down 5-3 at the start of the third. I think we've done okay since then.

I was at two of these games. 2009 New Years vs USA and the OT semi-final game against the Russians. Unforgettable. New years eve game we were getting clobbered. US players were skating by the Canadian bench every time they scored in the first. You could see it was getting Canada's Irish up. It was obvious play was going to get testy. And it did. Tavares literally put the team on his back to engineer the win. And in the semi, tons of people were leaving the game with 2-3 minutes left and down 2-1 to the Russians. To beat traffic, I guess. But once you were out of the rink, they don't let you back in. Too bad those thousand or so fans missed the greatest comeback I've ever seen live. Magic. And Tavares and Eberle were the last second act and put on that amazing show. And the 5-0 final to win gold against the Swedes was almost anti-climatic. Worth every penny we spent for the 31 game package at that World Jr's in Ottawa.

I loved this roster! It absolutely stung like no other franchise I rooted for in any sport when the Sens lost in the ECF. So, so proud of them that year! 🥹

Crazy to think its only been 4 years since this was uploaded, and a new update could potentially add several more goals: 1. Poulin's 2021 World Championship Gold Medal winner 2. Bedard's OT winner against Slovakia 3. Kent Johnson's 2022 World Juniors OT Gold Medal Winner (with a shoutout to McTavish's save) 4. Guenther's 2023 World Juniors OT Gold Medal WInner

The Crosby goal and the Eberle one I'll never forget. That entire World Juniors tournament that year was insane, especially that game and the New Years Eve game against the States. Living in Ottawa made it even more amazing. I took off work for all of those Vancouver Olympics as well and just sat there on the couch every day watching every single piece of Canadian competitions I could. Crosby basically ending the whole Olympics there after he had a rough tournament, and everyone feeling defeated after they gave up the lead and went to overtime was just perfect.

This list is not complete with out Paul Henderson's pretty game seven winner and grinder GWG in game 8 for the 1972 Summit series win. Sorry son, but those 2 goals transcend time and we still talk about those goals today and remember 50 years ago almost to the date seeing the school room clock at 2:45. Not sure if that was when Henderson got the goal or if it was really stressful but I can see the hands of the clock as vividly today as I could in grade 6 at the time. That series changed hockey for the better.
