Welcome to Under the Big Tree! For more than 35 years, I have been composing, recording, and performing music in a variety of realms, but always with a heavy technological emphasis. I deeply love analog synthesizers, as well as the electromechanical keyboards of the 70's, such as the Rhodes electric piano and Hammond organ. I've made a living continuously in sound design and music composition for interactive media for over two decades, and have been fortunate enough to work on some truly amazing franchises: Star Wars, X-Men, Guitar Hero, Mickey Mouse, and many more. I've always been a diehard DIY guy, and especially focus on building analog audio circuits, from outboard processing gear to Eurorack synthesizer modules. I'm also a passionate analog tabletop board gamer, and really love anything that involves bringing people together in pursuit of a common goal. It's time to share some of that experience, so come on board and have a look!

I just ordered this kit on sale at Thonk and I was stoked to see this. Thank you for sharing the build and the tips. I cannot wait to get mine up and running.
Did you just delete my comment?
HOW'S YOUR HAND NOW?
Love my 1010 boxes. Great video. Like your tone and delivery. Very much at ease and informative. You’re a pro! Subscribing now.
I have thirteen typewriters. Smith coronas Hermes and Royals.
Just watched the whole thing. So enjoyable in so many ways, Nick. Thank you!
Thank you!
Excellent. I'd get into synth just to be able to build them. I build cheap little Amazon kits.
Had mine 6 days ago ! In my own country . Flew to UK straight after surgery no problem . I only had a pain after anesthetic stopped working. Apart from that no pain at all. I have movement in my whole hand only full feast is a little tight to do .havent any swollen fingers at all . Feeling perfect since surgery really . Had a shower next day with special sleave . Day 2 I was allowed put only plaster on 🙂 I was super lucky or doing it privately it's just a lot better 😁
Because of your idea, I started to paint our two active characters with one contrast colour. Then, I bought another two colours for my friend's character. After that, I bought another colours. Now, I have all gloomhaven characters paint multicolour. They look very nice now. I started already to paint the Frosthaven minis. I am very happy. Thank you. If it weren't you, I didn't have started this new hobbie of mine.

I'm glad I had the right first dorsal Compartment and right endoscopic carpal tunnel done. I had outpatient surgery on 6/11 ,, no swelling of the finger. No numbnesd or tingling in my fingers,, thumb sore,, I only took the pain medicine maybe 3 days throughout the whole ideal,. In 2 week I doing fine able to start lifting small objects.. God is good just a vrry small cut above the hand on the wrist and it looks great. The old way I'm glad I didn't have to have that cutting my hand up to my wrist. Bandage was off in 48 hour and showing, no washing dishing or swimming, but showering fine. Grandbaby 10 yrs old help me by carrying my things. My suture dissolved on their own. Endoscopic is the best way. Full range and healing 1month.
Just had my right done yesterday, and I thank you for this helpful video. I am a mechanic and I can't wait to use my new hand!!
I had mine done yesterday 6/24/24. Came home and took a shower by myself. Put a bubble wrap package over my hand prior shower lol. Slept good last night, thank God no pain. Getting left hand done in a few months. I'm so ready to have my life back.
How is it 6 yrs later?
Had right hand done not bad pain, took Tylenol and Ibuprofen. Hard to use my left hand for everything so slow! The left hand do it later after right hand is healed.👍
I had mine done with a block so i was awake throughout. I went to hospital at 11am , surgery at 12.30, picked up at 2.30pm. i had no pain, have not had to take any pain medication. A painless experience for me. Back at my admin job in 5 days.
I’m getting ready to have this done on my right hand first, then the left. Your video has helped me so much! Thank you. What was the CBD stuff again. I want to try that. Hope you are feeling well!
I found a way to go on youtube and check videos, from a radar system. But then I come to a radar video.
FANTASTIC video. Your passion comes through and is contagious!
Had left hand done big mistake some how they damaged a nerve and now brace full time been 1 since surgery I also have ganglion cysts I will not have right hand done days go by and I can’t use left hand period hand is numbness throbbing and fingers don’t close but thanks for the video I am just a person with many health problems 29 different meds so I am glad people have an idea of what is to expect 😊
I grew up on analogue (at Maison Rougue strudios - Studer A820's with Dolby SR) and used one of the Sony 3324s but hated it - very clinical sounding. But I did a session in the late nineties on a Radar and was impressed, it had a nice full sound, not the thin digital I was expecting, and of course looked and worked like a 24 track tape machine. I was doing brass session and of course, when they completed a take I could go straight into record again. The session players complained as they were out of breath for the next next take. They would usually use the time it would take for tape to spool to get their breath back! The owner of the studio loved it as it he would occaisionally smoke pot and if he dropped in by mistake, he could just undo it... I use Cubase on a PC now and it would be great if someone could come up with a hardware PC solution all in one to run a DAW. Their are good options out therebut all revolve aroundlatest WIndows OS or whatever, which has it's issues. A gap in the market perhaps?
Awesome demonstration of this synth. Well done!! 👍
Having my surgery on the right side. I am also being put to sleep. Not afraid but dreading it..
Great system. I work the same way as you because I’m an analog 24 tr guy from the past. But you have been lucky because there is no longer support with the hardware and that’s not any expense. I want to mess with. You have been lucky. Take care..
Isn't local freezing the norm for carpal tunnel surgery?
What a wuss. I was back to using my hand(limited) the next day. I was gaming with my son with no problem. Also, pain meds for this is so unnecessary. The risk is not worth the reward. Just my OPINION
The Olivetti Lettera 32 was my first and best typewriter I used as a high school student. I liked using it instead of handwriting some of my homework assignment papers, since 1969. Unfortunately, my typewriter was stolen from my apartment that was burglarized on March 18, 1977. I miss my Olivetti Lettera 32 more than the "expensive" Kenwood stereo receiver. There were some high school papers in my typewriter case. That made the loss of my typewriter heartbroken, even today in 2024. Your story is great. It touches my feelings like nothing else could touch.
Now I’m more scared
This was just a series of Mr Chamberlin's anecdotes, which he managed to spit out between chewing his gum. The history of the mellotron, its increased use by prog rock bands, its introduction to the Beatles by the Moody Blues keyboard player Mike Pinder, when the Moodies were on tour with the Fab 4 in the UK in 1966 (& who just happened to have worked as trouble shooter for Streetly Electronics, makers of the mellotron), will have to wait another day. As will the fact that that the tsunami of double tracked string sound, much loved by prog rockers, was first introduced by the Moody Blues and their engineer Derek Varnals at Decca, on their core 7 albums. Try 'Out and In' (1969). There, that's just an outline, but still more of a history of the mellotron than on this video...............
Brilliant lecture, loved it.
Very interesting! :D I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Richard Wright recorded his second solo album (Broken China) with one of these. I'm using a Pro Tools HD system, but luckily, I don't have internet connected to my Mac, I don't ever quantize, don't have autotune and if a note happens to be way out of tune, which almost never happens, I just use a pitch shifter to lift it up/pull it down a bit, but usually I'll just re-record the tiny bit and only use a pitch shifter when I can't play it better.
Wow you’d swear you had brain surgery….i can’t imagine taking a general anesthetic to do this minor procedure (which it is). I had mine done yesterday with a local nerve block. It took 25 minutes in total including questions. My bandage was put on too tight, so it was relief to remove it before bed. I have Steri-Strips and a bandaid over the incision. I’m off work for 2 weeks and I don’t need any more pain meds today. Not even a painful procedure, it was uncomfortable at best and performed in the minor procedures department as opposed to wasting time and resources using an anesthesiologist, operating room staff, an operating room (where it would take longer to strip, clean and set the room back up for a true surgical case). Hopefully you are amongst the last of patients who get the option of general anesthesia for such a minor procedure.
I honestly want to try a modular setup really bad but the prices turn me away. I know a single piece can go from $2-300 up to over a grand. I guess it's really just up to you and what you want to build. Still very interested in getting my hands on a few one day.
Hello can someone tell me after surgery plus or minus a few months is the strength in the fingers and hands the same as it was
"yeah, thats going absolutelly nowhere" heheh, due to the name of the video, i hope it will.
I had it done nearly 2weeks ago one I didn't get put out as they didn't do that where I had it done. The pain did go away in my 3fingers after having it done but was painful in my two small fingers. Was pain full fir the 5days after. But I'm getting there now. Sill finding thing a little to hold. Not sure if I will have myoer hand done.

Congratulations on your surgery you made a great detailed video I will have to have both of my hands done as well Thank you 😊
The Beatles already used it! the first Beatle to have contact was drummer Ringo Star! And they immediately decided to take it to the Studio. The use of Mellotron is clear on the albums, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band from 1967 and Migical Mystery Tour from 1968. Without a doubt, The Beatles were the precursors of Progressive Rock!
Thank you for this great introduction !

Its cool that youre not bashing PT. IMO, tho AVID can KISS MY CHEEKS. You HEAR ME AVID? KISS MY CHEEKS!! They had our class teacher install protools ultimate on over 25 computer, half them wouldnt open. All the students also were required to purchase their own copy... And in some cases studenta were required to buy TWICE because their original install didnt work properly. Also you dont purchase it, tou "rent" it, because its all subscription. This is not to mention the ENDLESS Error dialogues. Every single action has errors. No audio manipulation was learned. Entire class became ProToolsTroubleshooters. Just googling foruma and youtube videos. Customer service is nonexistant in Avid.
I have been struggling with CTS for a few years now and as a drummer and piano player I have been super concerned about technique and long term side effects. Now that this has been over 5 years (and noticed from your rhodes and modular setup) I am curious: are you having any drawbacks or has it all been smooth sailing? Thanks!
check out that cool antique phone on the wall
How are you doing now?
Excellent review!
I think it can be healed with acupunture
