    Coming to this 3 years later, but really liked your explanations. A lot to absorb here. I really like how you put it. My prime of choice is a 35. I *did* just grab a 17-70 to see if it scratches my occasional "zoom in" need. But I *feel* like it'll be far less used compared to my 35. Before making that purchase, I hovered over the 50 for quite a while. I think I'm happy to stay at 35 OR use a zoom (depending on the project/plan). :)

    Question for the chat! Would that cromatic aberration show up if shooting in B&W? I know we wouldnt see the color, but would it appear as a sort of fringe or haze around the subject? As soneone who loves B&W photography, that might remove the one hangup I have with this lens....

    Chromatic abberation is a non-factor when shooting in B&W 👌

    Oh HELL YEAH, I'm now a subscriber to this channel! Smart arguments, brilliant advice, transparent, and genuine. You helped me decide on which focal length I need to use for when and where. But I will follow your advice going between 28mm, which will capture more "thick action" shots, and 35mm, which will get more specific. But to your point, both win depending on what story you tell and shooting style. Doriyan, you are truly talented! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and making this video, cheers.

    I've always thought that it was a load of crap, in my mind art is a gigantic library from which we can all borrow whatever we want and then everything we do will be borrowed to built upon whether it's thru emulation or deconstruction. The only way to steal would be to lock it up in a way in which no one else can tocuh it anymore, akin to what disney does with it's properties and everything they've touched. That's not only anti ethical but also against the spirit of creation by itself. But hey people like to quote picasso, usually without knowing anything about picasso. If they went and quote some of the other things picasso said they would probably go to jail kek

    I want to say thanks a lot. I think I learned something about photography style being beyond shooting with a certain film simulation or focal length lens. Starting from how I see the world to seizing the moment, maybe it is “I was here and this is what happened.” Or “I think is beautiful and/or interesting.”

    One more question, does it make sense to have both lenses? A lot of people recommend 35/85 as a 2 lens combo if you don't want to collect two many lenses. 85mm kind of gives you the ability to isolate a single detail even more and a 35mm gives you an opportunity to capture more in the frame or gives you the opportunity to capture a scene in a tight space, where you wouldn't be able to with a 50mm.

  • @Daniel_Ilyich
    @Daniel_IlyichАй бұрын

    Doriyan, thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. Can I ask, which 35mm lens do you use? And, more importantly, how close are you comfortable getting to your subjects?

  • @doriyancoleman
    @doriyancolemanАй бұрын

    You’re welcome! I’ve used various 35mm equivalent lenses from brands such as Fujifilm, Voigtlander and TTArtisan. I’m comfortable with getting close to subjects, but I prefer to keep a few feet of space

    @@doriyancoleman I used a 50mm back when I was doing street, regularly. Taking those extra 2 to 3 steps closer will be a challenge from the standpoint of crossing the comfort zone boundary. I think it's worth it, though. 35mm images make the viewer feel like they're in the scene. Thanks for taking the time to respond, Doriyan. All the best to you!

    Yeah, but if you got the Fuji 27mm WR already, because you didn't know about this lens, is it worth swapping? There is a fear of Manual Focus, and some some of the Fuji MF helpers, like those split prism and round dot thing, make no sense to me. I see hardly any difference.

    I bought the 40mm f/2 to use with my z6 II for street photography. I've since added the 28mm. I really like my 40mm. Nikon's 40mm z lens is very under rated. It is a very sharp lens. It has a close focusing distance. It looks great in black and white. It's one of my favorite lenses to use.

    Just ordered this lens. I hope it is better than the Mitakon 35mm .095 mk2 I had before it broke. Things I hated about that lens. The chromatic Aberration was pretty bad. Clickless aperture was constantly changing by accident! It was difficult to nail focus at .95

    Kanye Steals Straight Up also any artist that has sampled or remixed a song has stolen and those are typically the biggest hits. So yes I believe it is okay to "Steal" as long as you build off the previous work or even put a twist on it. STEAL STRAIGHT-UP.

    Hey Doriyan, I think the 50mm Lens is a very special optics. Not because it's considered the standard Frame, no. For me, this Frame requires real skill to use and to achieve a beautiful Frame. It's a refined way of seeing the subject and deciding how much context around the subject to include or not. This makes it difficult to craft with but so worth it. It forces me to participate with the scene /subject, it's a dance in the visual conversation to achieve the exact frame I desire. One step forwards, two steps back, bending my knees, zooming with my feet. All of this physical participation is required when using this Lens. Another great video, thanks, Mike

    I purchased this lens the day it was released and have been beyond pleased with it. Excellent review and I too initially found the CA to be very pronounced, by then I quickly realized that I was being too picky, realizing that CA would be part of the equation with a lens this fast.

  • @doriyancoleman
    @doriyancolemanАй бұрын

    Glad you’re enjoying it! Yeah the CA is definitely noticeable, but like you said it’s part of the game here. I still want to compare it to Voigtlander’s 35mm 1.2 someday. Take care!

    'It's probably not because of the size of your camera - it might just be because of you...' That's quite a harsh statement. A large part of whether a photographer will get hassled or not depends on the location rather than the photographer. If I'm in Central London no one is going to bat an eye no matter what I do or the size of my camera, apart from security who will always try and assert their authority. If I'm taking pictures around the estates of North London, overtly taking pictures of people probably wouldn't end very well for me and not be the smartest move, even with a tiny camera.

  • @901pics

    As an aged photographer, it's too easy to rely on auto focus... I will say the look of my voigtlander 58m 1.4 is my favorite lens if you have the time to manual focus. The images simply look better to my eye. Images from my old mitakon 35mm mk II 095 also had a better look. sadly, this lens is no longer usable. Something is loose! Its simple, if you have the time, manual focus with these lenses are inspiring.

    I had both the 18mm F2 and this one. I grab the 18mm F1.4 for astrophotography and its sharpness was spectacular. So many star fields. But wide focal length is not my interest. For street and everyday photography, I carry both the 35mm and 50mm F2.
