  I've been using Duolingo to learn Finnish for almost a year now. It's mostly good, and I also have Speakly. Some of the examples of sentences are silly, and it happens in other languages too. In Finnish after the first half of the Section 1, it's challenging to fit the verbs with the pronouns. For example to speak: puhuu, puhut, puhua etc. This is not something that I will ever understand using only language apps, we all need language books as well.

  I find Duolingo a waste of time... you spend too much time for very little progress, and gives you a false sensation of learning. Would rather practice using WordDive, which is much more well constructed and structured. (and harder...)

  2 other factors: the exposure you have to Finnish (Sweden and Estonia gets a fair amount) and whether you speak a genealogically-related language (such as Estonian).

  To be fluent in Finnish to me would be to read books and have deep conversations in Finnish.

  But that's just in spoken finnish.. kiitos would be the correct word for thank you. But thanks is also kinda a spoken word
