India was not Africa. It had an advanced civilisation but still it was far behind England. Apart from other things, Europeans were far more educated as compared to general Indians. Let's take the example of artificial fertiliser, it was based on German research, but it came to India through its contact with Britain . When we compare the education level of two societies, we can say that Indians were semi-literates whereas Europeans were highly educated people. It is undeniable fact, why would we distort history. What's the purpose of telling lies to public?

This talk given by Manu was so refreshingly engrossing. Manu brought history alive with his excellent talk, studded with factual details , straddling centuries of Indian history, and intelligently condensed in one easy flow . Do we have professors of his calibre in any of our universities today ? Decades back, in LSR , the history hour was so dull, that we skipped it, rather than be forced to concentrate on the insipid drone of the history lecturers. Another point which deserves to be commended, is when Manu drew our attention to the current Government's misplaced sense of cultural loyalty rooted in religious bigotry. Senselessly they have expended crores of rupees, to mulishly erect temples in supposedly historic spots, so as to avenge the destruction done to our temples by past invaders . What a way of making peace with our collective consciences! If we care so deeply about the preservation of our cultural heritage, what have you got to say about the general state of decay of so many priceless heritage monuments all across India, whose architectural grandeur and their sheer scale of magnificence is beyond compare . Today they are crumbling relics of the past. The awe inspiring temples of the South ,are in such a sorry state of neglect, with ugly electirc wires looped spaghetti- -style, in the most irreverent manner around the stunning idols ......what is the archaelogical department of India doing to preserve our much celebrated heritage? Thank you Manu for this brilliant talk.

Zareer kept shifting goalposts whenever Shashi whacked his nonsense! The fact is the British LOOTED india and actually destroyed the NW by creating a D grade nation called Pakistan to PREVENT USSR accessing the Arabian Sea trade routes. The thieving Brit’s entered into an evil back room illicit agreement with Jinnah to allow the Pakistanis to ANNEXE the INDEPENDENT COUNTRY of Baluchistan (yes they got independence along with India and Pakistan)! Why was a special reservation of seats allowed for Muslims? Were there special reserved seats where only Hindus could vote for Hindus? The whole Zareer argument is bereft of figures of the LOOT & PILLAGE of Hindustan by enslaving British “royalty”! Why did Britain create an INCOMPETENT RADCLIFFE LINE as far back as 1943 (under the India hater Churchill) and implement it in a matter of weeks in 1947? Churchill was a lousy SOB whose bones should be interred and fed to pigs! The time has come when Britain has collapsed because they cannot sustain without LOOT! Britain shall pay dearly for their repressive and cruel exploitation of colonial (mis)rule! As per latest research these lousy buggers owe a reparation of USD 45 TRILLION to India. We don’t want it. Let the nation of lousy shopkeepers feed on that LOOT! We will rule that shitty nation very soon - all their business is mostly under Indian dominance anyways India shall NEVER FORGET that the lousy Brit’s sent in the HMS Eagle Fleet into the Arabian Sea when the jerk Nixon sent the USS Enterprise into the Bay of Bengal in 1970, only to scoot like rats when the Russian subs showed up in between East Bengal (Bangladesh) and their fleet. Indians shall never forget. We shall rule UK economically India shall be glorious again! Boo to white skinned lickers like Zareer! 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼

While I agree that things were not black and white and there were silver linings here and there, it is what the majority of incidents and that the overall drive was religious for the invaders is something we need to acknowledge. Once the fact that these terrible atrocities were committed is acknowledged only we decide how to go ahead in a better way. The problem is the reluctance to acknowledge these.

Apart from racial considerations, there was practical necessity to keep Europeans in top bureaucratic positions. White people in India had to deal with ultra high occupational hazard. So handing top jobs like Commissioner of Police and Civil Administrator of City to local Indians could create security issues for Europeans.

I commend any Indian who loves their country, and is justly proud of their independence movement, who is also brave enough to discard historical caricatures and myths about British rule. I'm not defending the Raj; noted economists like Amartya Sen are highly critical of it, and that makes me hesitate to fully embrace what Masani is saying here, but we need more open-hearted curiosity and less snap judgment in this world.

Shashi Tharoor is talking bullshit. English ships were made of Oak, and would last around 30 years on average, and it is a better material than Mahogany. It resists salt water corrosion better and is easier to work with. Indian ships would have been made with Teak, not Mahogany' that was the standard material in the tropics. He doesn't even know what he is talking about. Britain has been at the front of naval architecture for 3 centuries. The East and West Indiaman ships were British and Dutch ships, the best at the time. Look up the build records, they're online. The only exception were the ships built by Wadia Group/ Wadia Family of Bombay Docks, who supplied high quality ships - Tharoors fictional account has no relation to that history. Britain had every right to protect its own ship building industry in 1817 and protect its workers...how is this even controversial? Is it racist for the British government to be pressured to protect its tax payers? He has no interest in the truth. He has made his mind up and simply runs his mouth with inaccurate data trying to confirm his bias.

Let's not let the facts get in the way shall we. Then at the end it all makes sense, one is a politician and one is a historian. One likes facts the other likes votes. Warning Hitlers rise to power followed a similar path, nationalism and victimhood.

@@donkeydesiamericanprofessor Despite pretending to be a multicultural society Racism against black people grew after 1860, when race-based discrimination was fed by then-popular theories of scientific racism.[16] Attempts to support these theories cited 'scientific evidence', such as brain size. James Hunt, President of the London Anthropological Society, in 1863 in his paper "On the Negro's place in nature" wrote,"the Negro is inferior intellectually to the European...[and] can only be humanised and civilised by Europeans."[17] Following disarmament in 1919, surplus of labour and shortage of housing led to dissatisfaction among Britain’s working class, in particular sailors and dock workers. In ports, such as South Shields,[18] Glasgow, London's East End, Liverpool, Cardiff, Barry and Newport there were fierce race riots targeting ethnic minority populations. During violence in 1919 there were five fatalities, as well as widespread vandalism of property. 120 black workers were sacked in Liverpool after whites refused to work with them. A modern study of the 1919 riots by Jacqueline Jenkinson showed that police arrested nearly twice as many blacks (155) as whites (89). While most of the whites were convicted, nearly half of Black arrestees were acquitted. Jenkinson suggests that the courts acknowledged their innocence and were recognising and attempting to correct for police bias.[19] Racial segregation existed throughout much of the country in the early 20th century. The landmark case Constantine v Imperial Hotels Ltd (1944) established an important step in the development of modern anti-discrimination law[20] and according to Peter Mason, it "was one of the key milestones along the road to the creation of the Race Relations Act of 1965."[21] Popular Trinidadian cricketer Learie Constantine was awarded damages at the High Court after being turned away from the Imperial Hotel in Russell Square, London in 1943. The proprietor believed his presence would offend white American servicemen staying at the hotel, as the United States Armed Forces were still racially segregated. Public and political opinion was in Constantine's favour over the case. In Parliament, then Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs Paul Emrys-Evans said the government: "most strongly condemns any form of racial discrimination against Colonial people in this country."[22] Although racial discrimination continued in England, this case was the first to challenge such practices in court. Critics regard it as a milestone in British racial equality in demonstrating that black people had legal recourse against some forms of racism.[23] There were further riots targeting immigrant and minority populations in East London and Notting Hill in the 1950s, leading to the establishment of the Notting Hill Carnival.

Genocide of millions of Indians just so that the British twats could feed their army and population across the globe and this man calls it "improvement of India". I agree the British left a bunch of good things in India, made railway network to where normally it wouldn't have back then, and infrastructure probably here and there but that doesn't even cover up 1% of the atrocities they carried out in those 200 years
