Hey mate im from England i'll be working in noosa for a while and will be flying to sydney on the Friday evening for the marathon do you think its okay yo collect your bib ect on the Saturday day time or is that leaving it too late its my first marathon so not sure if it gets too busy or not also i didnt realise they have a fitness expo either thatll be good
Hi mate, congratulations on your first marathon. I'll be picking mine up on the Saturday as I did last year and it was pretty painless at around lunchtime so I wouldn't stress. The expo is good so go and enjoy it I say. What time are you aiming for?
@@ultradiabetic oh nice yeah I think you can overthink things especially when it's your first. Well Im just hoping to finish it maybe around 6 hours but hopefully on the day the crowds give you a good buzz to go harder 💪 if I see you I'll say hi 🤙
@@jsan9389 are you walking or running the marathon?
@@ultradiabetic I'll be running and walking maybe I'll be doing it quicker than that maybe I'm overthinking it lol
@@jsan9389 mate set out at a comfortable pace and try and stay at it, it will hurt, it hurts all of us but thats the fun - “you’ll suffer, but you’ll be happy about it” 🤣
I’m traveling down for Sydney marathon too. Hope to see you down there. Let us know your plans down there.
See you there. I'm travelling Saturday and going straight to the expo so prob around lunchtime.
Good luck…hope you get your 3:20!
Thanks Amanda, gonna give it a red hot crack!
Great pacing!!
Thanks Amanda, abit fast but hard to judge on that course and running for so long.
Great video…shows the beautiful course and magnificent weather on the day…I did the full marathon and the 5-hr cutoff was great motivation to keep running up the hills and not give in to a walk!! Made it with over 16 minutes to spare. Thanks to the organisers and volunteers for putting on such a great event!
Well done Amanda, was a perfect day for a marathon. Don't forget to subscribe. Thank you
it’s a shame you’re not the 4:10 pacer for the Brisbane Marathon in 10 days…that’s thec pace I plan to do. Have a great run on the Sunny Coast on Sunday. Subscribed!
@@amandabarlow thanks Amanda. I applied for BM but they were all sorted eventhough their website was still saying pacers needed, but I’m down as a backup pacer so you never know 🤷🏻♂️
Fantastic video Nathan and spot on with the details on the event, thanks for coming down and see you next year!
Greate event, look forward to it
Great video mate…and thanks for the mention😊
Great catching up in person mate
As a brit i will be running my first marathon in Sydney this year cant wait to start of my working holiday visa in aus 🇬🇧🇦🇺🤙😎
I may also be running it again. Hopefully not too hot for you but I expect it will be!
So good mate.
Thank you Simon
Well done nath, great footage! Looked a bit emotional at the finish
Yes mate, was a hard journey to the start, glad to make it to the finish
Well done Nathan, smashed it! Thanks for sharing, looking forward to your next video on your diabetes, too! 🎉
Thank you. Coming this week.
👣👍
Good luck mate, will be following on the app.
Magic, will do you all proud
Hey man, as a t1 who's just got into running some decent distances, I would love a video thats just a more high level set of thoughts on running as a t1d. I feel like there's lots of lessons I've not yet learned, like how you're running with an insulin pen, as having high BG is absolutely BRUTAL on a run, but its a bit counterintuitive as id normally not want insulin anywhere near me on a long run. I feel like you have some wisdom but your videos are usually much more on the training than the t1 -- just thought I'd say I'd be interested and appreciate learning from your experience (obv not medical advice but you have experiences!). Best of luck on the marathon!
Thank you and yes I agree I need more T1D content so I will endeavour to produce one targeting points like you have raised. You may like one of my earlier videos if you scroll down the list which does talk about having insulin before exercise and why.
Great video, and I agree with all of your points. I was shocked at how many people were publicly urinating before the start of the race - yuk! I was running around the 4hr group, and the water stations were overwhelmed with crushes of runners. Volunteers did a great job, but water was an issue.
both toilets and waterstations have been fixed for this year. aswell as the start time. good luck breaking 3:30 this year
SALUDOS VOY POR LA MEDALLA MARATON SYDNEY 2024 DONDE PUEDO INSCRIBIRBE Y CUAL ES SU VALOR UN SALUDO DESDE COLOMBIA
Have to go to their website mate
Making 30km look easy 💪👌
Thank you mate
Would be interested to hear your thoughts now that they've announced some changes for 2024! Absolutely wild that the year before you ran it there was another 100m of elevation.. It was so brutal! Totally agree with you for the date change. It's currently just after the cut-off to be a qualifier for the following years' Boston Marathon, so even a week earlier would be great for weather and for BQs.
Thanks Harry, to be honest I don't believe owe actually need another Major, esp as Australia is so far away for the rest of the world, it will make it very difficult for people tomcat the full set, but saying that, if you live in Aus like myself, every major is a mammoth journey and very expensive. I think Abbott marathon major execs must've just watched this video and implemented all of my recommendations lol, where do Is end the bill?! Another 100m of elevation would've been brutal! Date definitely needs to change to avoid clashing with other majors and to avoid heat issues like 2023.
@@ultradiabetic CHANGE THE DATE!!!!!!!!!
Hi Nathan. Great video. I’m doing Noosa 50k ultra in 3 weeks and I’m interested in your thoughts on shoes. I have Hoka Speedgoat trail shoes but I’m loving my long runs in my ASICS road shoes. Could I use road shoes as it doesn’t look technical?
Hi Matt, congrats on closing to do this race. I have a pair of speedgoats which I wore on this race I believe and def would not recommend a road shoe, especially with some of the downhills sections and wood sections early on. Also the grass hill at half way would be too slippery for road shoes and the trail up to the 38km checkpoint and then near the finish would def warrant a trail shoe. Hope that helps. Also fill up on plenty of water at the 38k checkpoint and food as at 45k there was not much other than water.
TID fellow Queenslander here and I have my first ultramarathon in Noosa next month! I have trawled the internet looking for videos on people who have TID and do ultramarathons, was so excited to come across your channel and see we're in the same part of the world too. Thank you so much for putting yourself out there, Nathan. It's great to see some representation and see others absolutely smash it in the sporting world! Keen to look at the rest of your vids :) Ashlea
Thanks Ashley, I also have my insta account you can follow as well. What distance are you doing at Noosa?
@@ultradiabetic thanks Nathan, started following you the other day! I have a similar handle to my KZread name on Insta. I’m doing the 50K! I’ll do my damn best and my only goal is to finish within the time frame, and to manage my diabetes while doing it!
Great. Are you on a pump or MDI? @@Rockabillygoat999
@@ultradiabetic I’m on the Tandem T-Slim pump! I’ve been fine-tuning my rates with longer runs to gauge how it will be on the day. I really don’t know how it’s going to go until I try, the longest training run I’ve done is 25km, my personal method of training has been to work my way to up around the race distance for overall kms run during the week with some strength training twice a week :)
@@Rockabillygoat999 OK, the general rule of thumb when exercising is to half the basal amount and I think for an hoiur before hand as well
You got any other races planned this year? I'm sure you're gonna smash London 💪🏻
P r o m o S M ✅
I don't think Sydney will get a flat marathon. The city is hilly so no avoiding it. I think Sydney simply needs to embrace the elevation and sell it as a challenging marathon like Boston. But if they could get rid of the switchbacks and find a route which loops from the Harbour Bridge to the Opera House, I believe it would be a lot more enjoyable even with the elevation. I really hated the amount of time spent in Centennial Park and feel it ruins the run.
Yes agreed matt, the elevation for this marathon is something to be lived with
🥵 Summer miles = winter smiles 😅🎉 well done mate
Cheers mate, indeed
Bit of a different view to london 😮 Good luck with the training.
Thanks mate, hopefully the hot weather and humidity training is helpful.
great place to run!
Awesome vid, these events are so fun there should be more of them
Absolutely bang on correct
They passed the first test 😎😎😎
Good work team
Well done 👍
Thanks mate
That’s bloody awesome 😊
Thanks Ish.
The Sydney marathon course has some amazing views, but everything you mentioned is absolutely correct, especially the hills, the twists and the heat. The Gold Coast Marathon is far better, although even in July, the GC can be warm and humid. The Melbourne Marathon is probably much better than Sydney, although it can be a little warm as well, and then there is the HM intermingling with the marathon. One error you made is the Gold Coast HM is on the Saturday but the 10km is on the Sunday, not Saturday as you suggested. I ran the GC HM last year and my friend ran the 10km, he held my rain coat and I went and cheered him on, as he was coming back from open heart surgery. Anyway, thanks for the video.
Thank you, yes sorry GC 10k is on the Sunday.Glad you enjoyed the half.
Another good workout done!
Slowly acclimatising to the track sessions.
Thanks for this Nathan. I am trying to decide on whether to go to Sydney for the Age Groups World Championship in 2024, and while I would love to do the race, and would love to visit Australia, so far I see zero evidence that any of the troubling issues you bring up are being addressed for 2024 - the date is the same, the timing is the same, the half marathon is still on the same date (and starts earlier in the day - what is the point of that?), and the course hardly seems to be any different. It is a long and expensive trip from the east coast of the US, and I don't want to do it only to be aggravated by a lot of avoidable issues!
Totally understand Anthony. I’m not sure how it will get Major status with the issues I brought up and which everyone seems to highlight. There seems to be no structural recommendations made by Abbot. It just seems they want to accept Sydney just to take their money without making sure the marathon is as high a level as the other majors. Most of the world will find late September too hot and humid to run a marathon that starts at 7am. The whole marathon in my opinion needs revamping especially the start, the route and date. 🤞🏼
Keep saying it but that camera is amazing 😅
Hell yeah mate! Congrats
Thanks Ricky
Congratulations 🥳
Thanks mate
Yes mate! How long you gonna be over for?
Not sure yet, just working all that out
Nobody wants to go to China to run. Besides the career ending pollution, you might not able to leave!
I'm a Sydney boy and would never do Sydney Marathon as an A race. The course is awful. Scenic and iconic - right up there with the best, but running on footpaths, twists and turns, out and backs are no good. You could get a good flat'ish course if you started out west or south west, then ran in to the city and finish at the Opera House as per today. Hang on, I've done it. Start at Liverpool, run up past Warwick Farm, Villawood, Auburn, Lidcombe, Olympic Park, Rhodes, Gladesville, Hunters Hill, Lance Cove, North Sydney - then home across the bridge. It is going to get spicy in the last ten k, but hey, how bad do you want it? And how about that view?? www.google.com/maps/dir/Liverpool+NSW+2170,+Australia/Ryde+Bridge,+Concord+Road,+Putney+NSW,+Australia/Sydney+Opera+House,+Sydney+NSW,+Australia/@-33.8574509,151.1219376,13z/data=!4m30!4m29!1m5!1m1!1s0x6b129610b02d4195:0x5017d681632bea0!2m2!1d150.9179595!2d-33.9285567!1m15!1m1!1s0x6b12a501f1082941:0xe69525b4eaa79105!2m2!1d151.0947206!2d-33.8236801!3m4!1m2!1d151.145215!2d-33.8307701!3s0x6b12af7f6cf97661:0x60ef93c5b3d09cd!3m4!1m2!1d151.1832511!2d-33.8278456!3s0x6b12af1c47c77f17:0x1a365d24a46055de!1m5!1m1!1s0x6b12ae665e892fdd:0x3133f8d75a1ac251!2m2!1d151.2152967!2d-33.8567844!3e2?entry=ttu
I'm annoyed any time I have to do a switchback during any race. It ruins my motivation and just makes me think the organisers have been too lazy to design a proper course.
Yep, so much emphasis on Centennial Park. The most unenjoyable part of the marathon. I'm not saying they should get rid of Centennial Park, but it should only be running through it, not back and forth all over it.
Humble Brag-I've done all the majors 😊 Boston and NYC are not fast and also hilly. Out and backs are not good for 30k which i think they'd want as a major. Date wise it would need to change,it is too close to Berlin and Chicago.
Top interview Nathan. One of my best mates has type 1 diabetes and he wants to do a marathon and asked me for tips. I can't pretend that I know what that's like to run a marathon with Type 1. I sent him this video, and he was very grateful that you're doing what you do, with Type 1, and sharing your experiences/challenges/solutions. Great stuff mate!
Magic thanks Craig, hope it helps. Get him to reach out if I can help more
The up and backs out the front of Moore Park were annoying, turning at 180 degrees over and again. The heat got me, so that affected my speed more than the hills which I had prepared for. I wonder if we stepped in the same pothole?
There were several!
To expand on my comments the only city in Australia with the international appeal to be a major is Sydney and I dont live there however changes need to be made for it to make the jump to that level first of which is the startits to narrow for that size of field and not enougth room pre race. There is also an overreliance on the park with the endless out and backs in there, the road surface in parts was poor as well. I dont think the course profile is a problem not all courses need to be superfast NY and Boston both have significant elevation gain. Aid stations can be improved and removing some of the out and backs give room for wider aid stationsfor one with better access to ice (I only saw one aid station offering ICE) and gels.
Great points Mary, thank you
Great points Mary, thank you. I came across two ice stations but only in centenary park
Afyer jus hearing point 1 how is syndey even being considered for a world marathon lol
Why does an Abbott marathon course need to be “fast”???
agree with most of your points having done the race with the exception of the course being to hilly not all courses have to be super fast
Thanks Mary, yes certainly not as hilly as Brisbane
Hey Nathan, this years Sydney Mara was my first ever. It was an amazing experience but I can’t agree more with your points. Time of year is too hot and an over-reliance on Centennial park hurts its chances of becoming a major.
I think beginning of august would be more suitable
I bet it was beautiful
