Hey my name is Colin. I'm a father, a kayaker, and a physical therapist. My parents are both kayakers and I grew up with the sport. Around the age of 19 I started getting into creek boating and making videos. This channel is meant to be a collection of videos covering entertainment, information, and instruction. Thanks for sharing and walking through some of the rapids!
Nick!!!
The main issues with running those holes at that level being that they become too retentive and won't flush you out?
when water gets that big its not retention that I worry about, most will spit you out after 1-20 seconds or so, its the unpredictability. Your skirt could implode. Your paddle could get ripped out of your hands. You could split a helmet with that much force. You could get stuffed through a sieve or log that is far above your head at normal flows. You have no control over where you will roll up after getting chundered by any one of them, and the time to roll in between beatings is minimal. You will flush through most of these, probably, but one of those things will chaotic catastrophes will happen eventually.
@@liampurvis2477 Makes sense, thanks! I raft some class V but haven't reached that level in kayaking yet. The skirt imploding is a good point. Thanks for the thorough reply!
I love flood stage paddling on medium/big volume rivers. This is a perfect example of why that doesn't happen on steep creeks.
YOU ARE IN FUCKING SANE
Awesome video, loved the walk through. Seems like the whole river would be pucker factor. Every rapid looks consequential. Cant imagine running 14 miles of sustained Class V with serious consequences. This place just mystifies me and looks stunning. Great run!
Thanks! I'd say not 100% of the run is class V but there is an 8 mile section that is very sustained as you said.
Awesome Video! Great run. LET'S GET IT BOYS! _SUBSCRIBED_
This is AWESOME!!!!
Do you remember which episode of LVM that Tommy’s Top 10 Eddie’s of the Green was in?
No idea. Maybe if enough people bug him about it, John Grace will upload the old LVMs to KZread
@@Colin_Hunt found it. Episode 19.
A champion
G N A R !!
Thanks for this video. It was super helpful. I'm buying one in a couple weeks in time for summer break 🙂
Incredible padding, knowing your 6’3 190 helps make the decision on this boat. How is the foot room? Also what paddle and size, looks like a powehouse And what brand ear plugs, i have docs looking for something a bit better Thanks
I have size 10.5 shoes and had plenty of foot room. Yup, powerhouse 200 cm with 30* offset. The earplugs are SurfEars. They're a bit pricey but they fit my ears well and I have no problem hearing with them in
Bang yup helmet
Love the vid! Was wondering about your weight and height. Thinking about getting one of these soon
I’m 6’ 3” and 190 lbs. I feel like I’m slightly on the heavy side for the boat but know several guys heavier that day it’s still a good fit
Nice. Love the idea of trying a Tomahawk on my local run in the West of Ireland. Thanks for the inspiration 👍🇮🇪
Send it!
Hey I just saw you go down the Lester River!!! I was the person in the weighters
Must have been someone else. I've never paddled the Lester
What headphone do you use to listen to music while paddling ? Did you ever flipped while wearing them ?
They're actually just earplugs to keep the water out of my ears. The string is just to make sure I don't lose them if they fall out of my ears
2:56 Still one of the gnarliest holes I've ever seen... Would love to strap some crash test dummies to a raft and send it!
It would be destroyed
Some idiot in a creature craft will probably try it after seeing this😂
Great job..were you in a sweet ride???
Nope this was the Hot Whip
Did you paddled the Pyranha Firecracker ? How are they compared to each other ?
I haven’t tried it
Amazing stuff
Thanks!
Nice 👍 great message
Thanks. Pass the message forwards to more people
Good stuff! Always wanted to see someone do a flat spin on the right side shelf of gorilla. You may get surfed in the hole, but you obviously know how to deal with that.
Yeah I've had that idea in the past. I'm sure it's "possible" but I don't know if there would be enough time to pull it around. I've run the Christopher Columbus line multiple times (mostly intentional) and it always happens very fast. You're only on the shelf for a very short amount of time.
Nice one!
Thanks!
Love this video man! Thanks for the ideas and the inspiration brotha
You got it!
Yesssssss!! That tomahawk landed so nicely!! 👌🏼
Eh, felt like I landed a bit on edge for both of them. I think I can do better.
Maybe so, still great rotation tho!
This was an awesome video.
Glad you enjoyed it
I thought you dumped it! 😱 and then you were upright?! 😅 crazy lines and tricks!! Thank you for sharing
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it
Sick dood
Thanks!
What if I told you I live 15 minutes away from the Narrows, East Flat Rock to be exact, currently taking a kayaking class at Brevard College. You have guts man! Good stuff
Awesome! You live in a great location for kayaking.
Great content man. I am semi-local to LG, and as an obsessive backpacker I spend 30ish nights a year there. I love watching paddling videos to pinpoint points of interest that are off trail. Geological features and fishing spots are some of the POI I have gathered from paddling videos. Well done
That’s funny. I’ve kayaked the run a bunch of times and when I hiked the gorge a couple of years ago, I gauged my position in the gorge completely based off the glimpses of river I got and the rapids I could see.
wow that is super experience.
Thanks!
that is crazy water, man...exploding...
Definitely some of the most insane whitewater I've ever seen
That looked rather unpleasant. Cool to see it at such levels, but I can't say that it looked inviting. I ran it quite a bit lower than that, when it still felt challenging enough to me!
Yeah it was definitely cool to see at the time but not an experience I look to repeat very often
what brand of dry top are you wearing
Sweet protection. They don’t make dry gear anymore. Wish they did though, it was the best on the market
there's actually a rapid with a sneaky sieve called "Class II of Death."
That name describes a lot of rapids on Linville
You know the consequences are real when one of the rapids is named _DEATH PENALTY_
That was a good demo.
Thanks! Glad you liked it
Killer lines bro 🤙
Thanks man!
Colin, have you paddled an Antix 2 to compare? Seems like the closest competitor.
I have not paddled the Antix 2. I agree, on paper they seem the most similar. I would love to try it and compare
That would be awesome!
I had the same question. Would love to swap the antix for this if it’s comparable
I want this!
Get one!
@@Colin_Hunt looking into it! I weigh 213 lbs...how do you think she will ride for me? Thanks!
@@EthanHarris795 I weigh just over 190 and I feel pretty comfortable in it. The boat has a good amount of width and I definitely didn't feel to big for it. If you're into easy stern squirts and splats it'll be great. If you're looking for a half slice you can paddle on harder whitewater you may want to look at the Sweet Ride.
@@Colin_Hunt Thanks!
Colin, your skills are off the charts! Great paddling and video!
Wow, thanks!
Do you know how many inches of bow rocker the hot whip has? I know the sweet ride is 16” of rocker, just wondering if it is the same?
I honestly don't know the exact amount. It felt pretty comparable to the Sweet Ride
I really liked this style of video. Hope to see you do more like this! Maybe one on Taugs next? Trying to step up to that one soon, so would be cool to see from this kind of viewpoint. Looks like that Sweet Ride bow gets some skippity-skips!!
The Watauga is one of my favorite rivers! I certainly want to get back there soon. I'll see what I can do this spring.
Great video! If you have paddled one, how would does it compare to a Rewind?
I've only paddled the Rewind once and it was on the Grand Canyon a few years ago, so very different style of whitewater. Can't say I remember it well enough to make a thorough comparison. From what I do remember, the feel is a bit different with the stern kick rocker of the Sweet Ride, making it a bit more nimble. On the flip side, a medium rewind is gonna be easier to stern squirt than this kayak. The Sweet Ride is meant to be an aggressive river runner primarily with the ability to stern squirt as a secondary priority. It's not going to be a half slice, stern squirting machine. That would be more the Hot Whip.
@@Colin_Hunt thanks so much for the reply. Cheers.
Does a "Playful Stern" mean that it just does unintended Stern-Stalls whether you want it to or not?
It means that it's easy to stern squirt, pirouette, and splat. As with many half slice kayaks these days, as long as you have downstream momentum, the stern typically doesn't submerge.
Awesome video Colin! Chili looks amazing!
It really is!
Phenomenal paddling! I’m sold on this boat already
Thanks!
Long day.
Yeah, it can be. But it has been done 3 times in a day for a vertical mile
