    Great sounding speakers makes it easier to identify and thus control reverb, compressors, placement and depth. There is no doubt about that.

    I agree. That mindset has done so much damage to music overall. Apart from the studio where I trained there were (real) NS-10s, I have never used studio monitors. My first speakers were handmade with an 8" dual cone + piezo tweeter, no crossover is a light ply box ported by ear using the same technique as the harpsichords my father was building (from scratch). I got some of those pieces bounced to CD at a studio with massive Genelecs and it sounded fine to me and the engineer was complimentary. I knew those speakers because they were what I listened to all music on for years and years. I still use Jamo C803s with a Rotel A10 and while some (cheaper) "studio monitors" may be more flat (claimed ;-) I do just fine. I find that people who insist (like Nazi bullies) that you MUST use monitors, rarely have any work to show, and then if they do, it is bland, generic, flawed... None of the amazeballz Pro-ful-ness they insist must flow from their thoughtless rigidity. :-)

    I liked the 102 on most things. 103 sounds slightly clearer but liked 102 overall.

    Well considering the kali ppl worked at JBL not suprised they sound very similar. Where they vary s as are the controls on back. Can't go wrong with either. I have the JBL. Kali are no slouch.

    This is not a fair comparison. You should have compared the WA12 MKii Vs GAP PRE73 MKii.

  • @compucorder64

    I have both of these. And I use the WA12 API-style pre for electric guitar, percussion, and sometimes toms. And I use the GAP Neve-style pre for most other things (vocals, bass, kick, snare). Including using it as a DI for bass. Apart from acoustic string instruments (nylon & steel guitar, strings, piano), where I prefer my cleanest/quietest/flattest pre, the Cranbourne Camden EC1. I sometimes use the Camden EC1 for vocals too, especially if using an SM7b or a Ribbon mic rather than a U67 or 414 style LDC mic. My audio interfaces pres (MOTU ultralite mk.V) get used for overheads or room mics (ribbons).

    I respectfully disagree. Alright...it is moreso that the thought is incomplete such that I am not really disagreeing as I am emphasizing the key point of investing in the right tools for your project. The key in the video is when he talked about he used monitors himself and the monitors help him to essentially have an efficient workflow. The example that I give folk... U could build a house with an axe, but a more efficient tool is a hammer. But even with a hammer, u still need to get the best hammer i.e. tool for the job. Sooooo....even if u know that your home stereo speakers are adding low-end, it is still impacting your work flow because it is impacting all of your mixing and mastering decisions. The more efficient way is to mix and master on the most neutral monitors that u can afford and then listen on different platforms until u have a sound that u r comfortable with on the multiple platforms. For me, I normally listen on my car speakers, my laptop, and my home stereo speakers before I say the master is as good as it is going to get. If all u have is your home stereo speakers because u r just getting started, then the video is fine buuuuuuuut if u have the budget to afford better tools and u choose to cheap out because this video tells you to simply use your current crappy speakers and make sure u understand the enhancements that are impacting the mix by using reference material, then the advice is bad advice especially when he tells u that he uses monitors. Anyways.... I just did not want some new home studio person to take this video as gospel and not invest in the right tools that they need to work on their projects. Good luck everyone.

    Hi, do you think I can use my existing 2.0 speakers that are supposed to have a very flat freq response instead of buying studio monitors ? Here's a graph for the measurement alongside some JBL and Kali monitors. I intend to run these through the headphones output of an audio interface. I want use them primarily to track guitar. Is this a bad idea and could I potentially damage my speakers even if I am careful with the levels of the headphone out. imgur slash a slash NsVF8Vq

    They sound identical except for louder white-noise on the the sm7b. some comments say the sm57 is more sibilant, but that's probably because no foam pop filter is being used. The a2ws windscreen would probably fix the sibilants to some degree.

    Capitol Studio A bought elite PMC monitors and then had to tweak them for days. Monitors are like a DAW, it’s not the monitor (DAW) , it’s the user.

    Cheers for this. I know it’s old now. Good comparison, proving to my ears that they are both excellent in their own right and for different things and flavours. This video made my decision to get both units. I like what they both do, for different reasons. For me, Warm is fantastic of vocals, piano and acoustics, but I prefer the GAP on electric guitars and bass. It’s all subjective and down to taste. And it changes depending on the song. Thanks.

    If this was all tracked on the same vocal take its shocking. The Neumann literally sucks the melody out of the voice you can barely distinguish the key.

    Hello and thank you, sorry on the belated response. It was all tracked at the same time with themicrophones in this exact position of the thumbnail. It's not perfect, but I still like using one take into all the microphones all at the same time to eliminate that variable at least.

    Are you even aware how much would it cost to make exactly the same AKG C414EB BRASS CAPSULE microphone today? The mic is built like a tank with high quality components and of course expensive for a reason. Best overall multipurpose microphone ever built in my opinion. Fantastic microphone!

    Well I'd say this is very wrong ! most people who have recorded music lately sounds like crap in my car ! as compared to say like van halen (summer nights) which sound's awesome no matter where it is played ! you do need good speakers not 100.00 one's for mixing it properly ! And if this is the case ? why do you have the pro monitors behind you ?

  • @manoglzinn
    @manoglzinn3 ай бұрын

    Well, you need to be used of what music sound in your car or any other device to have an reference, and the more references you have the more you can get precisely on your mix

    Today's studios are small basement/home project studios-- you don't need studio monitors. But, in a commercial application with revolving engineers you absolutely do need a coherent playback system.

    El AT4050 me gustó más en tu voz, el 4047 sonó algo turbio debido a sus medios-bajos, sin embargo me encantó el 47 en el piano, le agregó un "peso" que lo hizo sonar más lleno, en los platillos también fue mejor que el 4050 en mi opinión.

    The most famous studio monitors was a hi-fi speaker! The Yamaha NS-10s. Let that sink in. In reality all you really need are full range speakers or failing that any speaker that you are used to. We have been lied to and made to feel inadequate unless we spend spend spend!

  • @manoglzinn

    Yeah this what im sayin, you have to be used to on how music sound in your device to know what you are doing in a mix, even with cheap headphones or speakers

  • @wynton765
    @wynton76510 ай бұрын

    I agree that to an extent you can get great mixes on speakers that you know extremely well. I look at it like this.. Say you have a pair of clean, super clear glasses, and your being asked to walk down a road and avoid all rocks on the road. With very clean and clear glasses, you will be able to avoid a lot of the rocks on the road. Now say you were given a pair of smudged dirty glasses that are scratched, and you were asked to do the same thing and avoid all the rocks. Obviously it will be more difficult to avoid all the rocks. But hey, lets say these are your glasses, you know them very well and have been using them for years although they are messed. You are aware of objects in certain areas because you know that you may not be seeing them as well, and your still able to avoid a lot of the rocks. But the thing is, while you may be able to avoid a lot, your probably still going to miss and run into small rocks that you may have not been paying attention to, or rocks that are out of your vision because your glasses aren't ideal. Of course, the more experience you have going down that road full of rocks, the better you will be at avoiding the rocks, but you can only do so well if you can't see them all. My OGs have always told me, your only as good as what you hear. If your just using headphones, or just using speakers or low quality or medium quality, using low quality converters, you may be able to get a great mix, but your probably sitll missing a lot of finite details and definition that can make your mixes even better. And in this competitive music industry where many pros pride themselves in releasing amazing sounding products, who wants to be missing those details? IDK that's how I look at it.

    Would you say that the AT4050 and AT4047 have the same form factor ? They look the same.

  • @hxhdfjifzirstc894
    @hxhdfjifzirstc89410 ай бұрын

    I think the 4047MP is nearly identical to the 4050, because of the pattern switch, while the 4047SV has a slightly different body, without the switch cutouts. As far as having the same general 'form factor', they certain do by appearance (I assume they are dimensionally identical, as well, because it's more efficient to standardize things for manufacturing).

    A wonderful demonstration of these two mic's. The only thing missing was acoustic guitar. I prefer the 4047 for its more earthy characteristics. Well done. Thank you.

    Can I use both the 4050 and 4047 whilst recording ? I usually use X2 AT2020s for a live recording set up I am just wondering if getting X1 4050 maybe for the instruments I.E guitar and buying X1 4047 for the vocals or vise versa whichever works best what do you reckon ?

    Crazy, this is the first comparison that I can actually hear the difference between the two mics in the spoken part before the singing. The 102 sounds a bit darker, and also audible in the piano's chords. The other instruments sounded identical except the individual drum pieces where I thought the 102 sounded better

    There's a difference in sound when solo'd but that difference will definitely get lost in a full mix.. I guess it's not worth spending so much on a preamp rather on more important things like mic, room treatment and most important eq'in skill etc..
