Belonging, commissioned by the Skanes Dansteater, a double bill contemporary dance performance premiered at the Malmo Opera House last October 13, 2018. The first piece “To find a Way with One Another” was choreographed by Ben Wright (British), and the second piece “The Lonely Hunter” by David Hernandez (American). I am commenting solely on “The Lonely Hunter” (TLH) since Wright’s piece did not grab my attention. TLH, the dance, befittingly translated the poem of the same title by the Scottish poet Fiona Macleod (aka William Sharp). I am not sure if this poem was David’s inspiration. O never a green “ leaf whispers, where the green-gold branches swing: O never a song I hear now, where one was wont to sing. Here in the heart of Summer, sweet is life to me still, But my heart is a lonely hunter that hunts on a lonely hill. The choreography, music, stage setting appropriately demonstrated the feeling of loneliness, of alienation, of being an outsider in a crowded world. These human conditions, gone in a blink of an eye, then death.The stage designed by Zvardka Kirigin, consisted of several wide black curtains suspended from the ceiling, filling up the stage with a somber canvas for the dancers to manipulate. The curtains when twisted looked like a Maypole and at other times like Chinese dance ribbons. In other instances , the curtains were fluttering, billowing above the dancers like dark, ominous clouds. The dancers’ movements were a mix of sharp, angular ,contemporary urban steps and intermittently lyrical, almost balletic. The music, specially composed by the Polish Composer Symon Broska complemented, even in silence, the beautiful choreography. TLH was mesmerizing. I am hoping to see it again, somewhere outside of Malmo,Sweden.

I love Marina's works and all the dancers she works with but I think its way more interesting and I prefer just watch them dance. When theres a lot of words "complementing" dance, it lose a lot of itself, a lot of just interpretations and possibilities... When the artist gives everything to the receivers, theres no medium between art and people and they (people) tends to being guided by what artist says.. I know anybody is reading this but I had to put it anyway. Thanks for the video.
