The outer cirlce line was to originally take fresh farm produce from East Victoria to the markets. There was no govt railways back then transport was funded by businesses who took huge risks with their own money. Then without any help from the govermment, they Victorian Govt started making theor own roads and railways and undercut businesses.

"Why are these old lines turned into bike paths?" The government really does not like giving up its land, it may be an old road or a train right-of-way. The government knows that if it wanted to do something with the land in the future, it would be expensive to buy back. Also, much of the land is unusable for anything else. too narrow or is at the bottom of a cutting

The Kerang accident was not the driver did not swerve to miss the train. He actually could not see the flashing lights due to the intense fog and hit the train and due to the direction of the trains travel it dragged the truck around and caused the dig into the carriage

Im a few years late but i love your passion for this. One thing I would say, cease service on the Altona loop but keep the loop intact. In Brisbane we have the seldom-used Tennyson loop, which is a great help when we have inner city closures for the Cross River Rail, as Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines can redirect to the city via the Ipswich/Springfield lines. The same could be used in a pinch if theres ever any issues on V-Line, and they need to redirect via Werribee/Altona.

About 1.5 km closer to Dandenong from Lynbrook Station, there used to be another station called Lyndhurst with a few Victorian railways-owned houses around it. It was accessed via Bayliss Rd. In 1981, a few months before the station closed, along with another co-worker I installed some extra temporary phone lines to one of the houses for a local politician and he stood us to a nice home-cooked meal and some discussion about local history. That area haas been swallowed up by an industrial estate.

I was a signal fitter on the VR in the middle 1960's. That building on the end of the platform is the old D signal box. There were 4 signal boxes in the immediate area of Flinders st. station. There was A box to the west and B,C and D boxes at the east end of Flinders Street Station. They have all been replaced by a computerised signalling system. However the old D box and relay room may still house modern signalling equipment and is the reason the buildings are still there. D box was the last I worked at before leaving the railways.

As a kid, I am now 84, I lived in East Kew. At the time there were still train lines in the East Kew station area complete with a few railway trucks. I think the rails even extended to Deepened. There was also an air raid shelter on the station site that "Werner's gang" had adopted as their headquarters. Werner was to be avoided.

G'day Train Man, it's been a while. I've seen this vid before and it's very good. Did you ever get to Fitzroy? Anyway, I'm not sure if you've seen this little doco on the North Carlton railway station and the Inner Circle, but it's a good one to watch. Great history and details the locals fight to save the building in the early 1980s. To think, some developer wanted to build a big, ugly concrete factory on the site! Thank goodness that didn't happen. Enjoy the doco. 👍 kzread.info/dash/bejne/d2hmsMl9iaiYnqQ.htmlsi=gW4quRlhA16uCRG3
